- One of the most close finishes in Bathurst 1000 history. Garth Tander and Craig Lowndes had to battle to win the most biggest prize in Australian motorsports on the closing laps of the great race.

Lowndes has an amazing reaction time and he is gutsy! Really good driver.
Watched this countless times now and it still makes my heart race, just love the aussie V8's.

So these guys race 620 miles on a track like this...? For four to five hours? Wow.
They have two driver changes. Main driver starts the race, co-driver does the middle stint generally before the half way mark with a compulsory minimum of 54 laps and then the main driver gets back in to finish the race.
Yep 620 miles in just over 6 hours. Back in 1970 and 71 when the race was only 500 miles (130 laps) Allan Moffet drove the race on his own in 6h 34m and 6h 09m respectively. Then in 1972 the legendary Peter Brock raced on his own and took 6h 00m.

I love the Bathurst 12 hour race. For whatever reason, the mountain seems to produce very close racing. But on the way to the checkered flag there is a lot of crashes and heartbreak. Video doesn’t really show how steep the track is, and its many difficulties humbles the best.
Here is the last 16 minutes of a 12 hour race with 5 cars fighting for the podium. After 12 hours 5 cars are paint scraping close to each other, and a surprise result. The UK commentator is the icing on the cake: czcams.com/video/54fS8XRUP2I/video.html

Joshua, I have watched quite a lot of Le Mans racing and to me it doesn't hold a candle to Mount Panorama.
im a Ayrton Senna fan and when he died, motorsports died to me, until now with your Australian V8 Supercars, filled with excitement, even the tv cameras are placed in the perfect spots so we can get exciting views. simply amazing. McLaughlin, Whincup, Gisbergen, Greg Murphy, Winterbottom, Lowndes... so many good pilots. Congrats to all, from Portugal.
The Le Mans 24 Hour, Nordschleife 24 hour, Indy 500, Daytona 500 and Monaco Grand Prix's are all events that are of a larger status and prestige. Not taking anything away from the Bathurst 1000 it's one of the greatest motorsport events in the world but saying it's by far greater than any other is pure idiocy.

I'd still say currently the 3 most professional drivers out there would be Jamie Whincup, Craig Lowndes And Garth Tander. Garth never makes mistakes and has a very intelligent style of driving a race car. The only reason he isn't getting great success would be that he just hasn't got the right car underneath him. And it shows, because every time he has a good car behind him he is extremely hard to beat and shows great pace.

I remember watching this like 8 Odd years ago, I remember Tander screaming 'fuckoff' in his car when he was driving along skyline.
Anyway, what a great race and for it to come down to just metres, milliseconds. I was going for Lowndes, Well done Garth Tander.

Tander just had like 20 or 30 more horsepower, Lowndes couldn't even hold a slipstream behind.
Great driving by both, but kudos to Tander's engine builder.

I remember being super pissed off when Tander beat Lowndes to the finish line. Looking back on that moment, I cringe over it and laugh how Wingecup's engine failed, thus preventing him from winning the race.
If it had not been for 888 looking after Whincup rather than trying to win the race , Lowndes would have won
while im watching this again i sort of have keep reminding myself that tander did win this race....it just looks like lowndes going to overtake tander

This is Bathurst 1000.
A 1000 kilometre race (161 Laps) contested each year. By far the biggest race in the calendar year and in my opinion, bigger than the Championship itself.

If the Lowndes/Skaife car didn't have to waste time stacking int he pits behind Wincup, they would have won this race easy.

Back when the Supercars were good bring back the days of the real commodores and flacons, and the rivalry over those years of Tander, Lowndes, Whincup and Winterbottom

Lowndes wasn't aggressive at all, had several opportunities to dive and pass.
Craig is too smart to pull any moves off though. Could’ve ended badly, he’d rather take 2nd than DNF

Let's look at the numbers, shall we? Lowndes has won Bathurst (at time of writing) 6 times, Tander's won 3 times. Lowndes has won 3 Australian Touring Car titles, Tander's won only once. Craig Lowndes is the one of only two racing drivers in Australian Touring Car history to win more than 100 races. I think these numbers speak for themselves.

It's interesting how Holden's dominance at this great race doesn't translate into Holden Commodore beating Ford Falcon in the Google search results. 79 million for the Blue oval while a miserable 29 million for the belly up GM branch in Australia. Lowndes should of stuck with Ford and drive a Mustang.
