Smashing Pumpkin’s first two albums, Gish and Siamese Dream, were a huge part of the soundtrack for the early ’90s alternative rock revolution. Still sounding revolutionary all these years later, the band’s leader, Billy Corgan, recently brought Smashing Pumpkins to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena for the Spirits on Fire tour, on the heels of their 11th studio album, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts.
The concept album is a sequel to Smashing Pumpkins’ definitive three-LP masterwork Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, from 1995-which also brought them crushing into the mainstream. Acts two and three of Atum are scheduled for January and April 2023. But meanwhile, there are live shows … and all the gear it takes to recreate more than three decades years of the band’s signature sounds. PS: Special thanks to super-tech Trace Davis for his help with the fine points.

"NOT many guitars"???
That's a REALLY illogical excess of guitars! !
(No wonder ticket prices are so high today! ALl the GREAT bands of the 1970s only needed ONE guitar and maybe a backup!)
If you are dragging a guitar around the world....that you use on ONE SONG......you are a diva with no grounding.
WASTE
IS
WRONG
I noticed the torpedo CaptorX's by Shroeder's board. I've been thinking about using mine live as well. So he's going IR's to front of house and the ISO cab is a backup,
Jeff seems like the coolest guy. Genuinely looks like he loves to talk and show and teach people about this stuff.
Briefly met him in 2009.
He was just as nice to me as he seems in interviews. Im so glad he stayed in The Pumpkins even though James came back.
@@standinsilence yeah I love that he didn’t leave when James came back. That’s cool that you got to meet him.
@@standinsilence The Chili Peppers could’ve done that too…
@@MrMastrsushi
Seems like a very different situation with The Chili Peppers and I think Hasselhoffer would had mostly just been in the way if they had tried keeping him around after Frusciante rejoined now.
He has articles on the Line 6 site for Helix related stuff.
Billy Corgan using a Behringer pedal…..Guitar snobs are gonna have an aneurysm.
Lol. Right?
Jajaja, para que veas.
No, they’re gonna rush out and buy them out and the price of them will skyrocket
It's a little bit easier to try out every pedal under the sun when you have Billy Corgan money. I love the pumpkins, but knowing how he is he probably did it just to brag about he can create a great sound out of a shitty pedal.
Snobs use what what makes them feel a certain way, pros use what works.
Jeff is a guitar nerd that escaped the bedroom and now shares his perfect quantum triangulated tone with the world
😂
I have to say at the Irving Plaza he was lowkey my favorite to watch and hear it was a blast I got in
Jeff was actually at guitar lessons when he was 19-20?, and was discovered by his teacher’s roommate. So, immediately into playing All of the major Hollywood Clubs to a tour around the world… he was Meant for this! He is a most excellent dude. 🤙🏻🔥
jeffs rig is so awesome and unique. it’s really cool to see the drastic differences in rigs between guitarists, even in the same band!
Really enjoyed this Rig Rundown. Loved hearing about all the gear, and it is really cool when an artist like Mr. Schroeder is so involved and willing to share like he did. Definitely one of my favorites, well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!❤
Man I'd love to have a beer with Jeff's guitar tech! Seems to be a wealth of knowledge!
Just adding a few infos for those who care : the pickups in the Machina era Les Paul Special are P100. This one in particular has the neck pickup out of the circuit and is hardwired to the bridge pickup this is why the selector was removed. And Billy's ES 335 is not from 72 but from 77 to 79, the only years when you had the extra switch on the upper side of the body to split the humbuckers into single coils.
Thanks for a great video guys, us gear nerds love this!
He said it was a 79
I KNEW you’d be here!
@@KentBuchla of course 😅
@@gmmakesmehurl no it says he uses it to play 1979 which is, you know, a pretty famous Smashing Pumpkins song...
I also think the Elliot Easton Tikibird is a prototype, because of the black guard and switches.
we need James Iha now! Probably the most simple of all of them but I love that
James had a very, very similar setup to what was used with A Perfect Circle ... check it out: czcams.com/video/WxoHvr2ICYA/video.html
I love these rig rundowns. Especially love hearing the roadies. Jeff and David are a great pairing!
That custom Pacifica.......NOICE. Jeff seems such a humble, down to earth guy who shares his geek tips quite unabashedly, so huge props to him. Very, VERY cool rundown.
Yes it is. I love Yamaha. I wish they would push more higher end Pacificas. They are so good.
@@kebotrans They used to be amazing - check out the 1221 or similar models of that era, absolutely as good as Ibanez or ESP.
They need to update the Pacifica line. More modern necks and ss frets
@@supernothing77 I wish they would!
Crazy how much Billy's rig has changed since the last rig rundown. I thought his different amp models in the rack was really cool
Yeah he had everything digital right so now he's going back to this very smaller horizontal sort of analog four amp setup
I saw them live almost a month ago and it was incredible the sound was mixed perfectly
I really loved this rig rundown. It's cool to see how some bands are doing things differently. This was definitely different than your typical live rig.
"we change strings every day"
"I love these strings because they last longer" 😄
On road / off road
Just I been waiting for. Nice job on this one. The Pumpkins team is smashing, seem like awesome cool dudes.
Great rundown, Jeff and his tech are especially awesome at explaining the rig.
That was a great rundown episode John! Thank you!
What a great rig rundown. Love it!
Keep an eye on those Yamaha RevStars. For the money, at ANY range, they're just fabulous guitars. I have 2 that are still bone stock and I would put them up against any brand regardless of price.
@@gregorybryanparmer The Pacifica is one of those gems that once you discover, you think "holy smokes, where have you been all my life?" I am fortunate that I work for Yamaha and I get an employee discount. For musical equipment it's 40%. But the guy who runs the employee shop will call you up and say "hey, I know you ordered a 2020 Revstar in this finish, but we have a 2019 in this finish that we can sell you for 60% off if you want to change" and when you're talking about a $900 list price guitar, that can be some serious money.
I'd love to see one or play one and consider buying it.
Trace Davis is the the founder of Voodoo amp, famous for their boutique amps and mods, the guy knowns his shit when it comes to Tone !
One of the most informative guitar tech vids in recent days. Thanks!!
That first tech guy was quite funny, reminded me of Bubbles [Trailer Park Boys] when he said 'I don't fuckin' know, man'. Great vid.
FANTASTIC rig rundown.
I came for Jeff’s revstar and it didn’t disappoint. A surprise to see the mini humbuckers. Love mini humbuckers in my Firebird. The Revstars are brilliant guitars.
At first I thought “meh, I like when the artists do the rundowns” but this guy is really cool :)
Looking at the band in the 90’s when they came out I never got the impression that Billy was such a guitar shredder. I figured that was James’s roll in the band and Billy was the songwriter rhythm guy. Seeing them live in ‘94 blew my mind its the opposite way around.. Billy the fckin dude
Incidentally James iha is a great songwriter/chords guy and it seems he only does leads when billy isn’t able to play those parts.
They’re a good team musically, glad they finally made up.
Iha shreds don’t worry. Billy was an ego maniac and control freak then and had the chops to do it all. I’m sure he shares more now.
Yayyyy!!!! I love this band and Jeff really adds to the live performances! Even though he's new I believe he really has pushed Billy to explore some of those nice heavy amps and gain.
He's far from new. Jeff has been in the band since early 2007, so over 15 years now.
Billy is the reason I bought a JMP1 thirty years ago.... still have it. It's a legend preamp.
Billy’s rig changes so much from tour to tour it’s insane 🤘
This👀
Not really this is first major switch for them for a long time
They both had a custom made Salvation Audio modules rig for all over a decade before this current setup.
Yea still think his 07 rig was the top outside of the 94, 96 rigs
Bollinger looks like a guy to have a beer with and chat about music all night 🙂
And then subsequently melt your face off.
Far too annoying.
Can't say I am a huge follower of SP but this was really interesting, and Jeff was cool being so hands on with his rig and doing the rig rundown himself. I will definitely go and check out some of their stuff now.
What a joy all these guys were to listen to. I always enjoy the enthusiasm and curiosity John Bollinger brings as an interviewer. He brings out their own enthusiasm about their guitars and gear. ☮️
what a fantastic rig rundown!
Jeff Schroeder seems like the best kind of person
Jeff's rig is so awesome what a brilliant setup!!!! Takes it serious!!!!! So cool!!!
I like when the performers explain their stuff. Jeff seems like a great guy.
Great seeing Trace from Voodoo Amps with Jeff! Some of the best amp mods out there!
No one is useing Ge Treble boosters live anymore they told me. They are to tempremental they told me.
Bravo Smashing Pumpkins
Billy’s guitar tech doesn’t know what pickups are in his guitars or how the les Paul is wired? Seriously? I really wish Billy had just done this himself like his last rig rundown. He usually tends to enjoy talking about gear so I’m surprised he didn’t show for this.
A shame we didn’t get to see James Iha’s rig.
Jeff was awesome as always. 😊
There are different Railhammers in each of the signature Reverends. The first model has Billy Corgan Railhammers which are closer to a P90 in some ways and that model (with the cut up pickguard) is korina from what I remember. The newer one is the Z-One and those Railhammers are matched more for the alder body in the new one. From where I was sitting at shows, the new Z-One cuts through the mix better on rhythm tones, but the original signature model had a more pronounced "cocked wah" lead for leads. The problem with isolating it to the pickups or body wood, is that I saw them 3 times with the original sig Rev gtrs when he was still using the Salvation Mods Modular preamps/Strategy 500 rig, once with the new Z-Ones, and the Modular rig, and now once with the whole new system on display here. For my money, I thought this new is the best live sound I've heard from Billy's amps since 2007, although I miss a slightly more elaborate FX setup with his tones. Billy pretty much leaves the effects to James (Axe FX III) and Jeff (Helix), and just used these pedals for various Guitar Solo sounds. The Les Paul Special is routed for the Bridge pickup only, and all the controls are disconnected, except for maybe 1 volume knob. That's why he took the pickup selector out all the way back in 2000. Where he strums and picks, he isn't comfortable with where the Gibson selector is placed.
@@jcoriha Bro, you should have done the rundown instead of his tech! Excellent info! 👏
Iha's rig is as dead simple as can be - His guitars in an Axe FX.
@@jcoriha damn. I sure wish I could know and use this kind of stuff. Brilliant.
@@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer into Friedman Cantrell signature heads.
When I saw the at Metro a few months back. I saw a Friedman Steve Stevens amp in backline
I will say this, I was at the Philly show and all the guitars sounded absolutely amazing, especially Jeffs😎🎸you can hear the time taken into all the rigs!!!
Is Iha not in the lineup... Again?
@@BobbyGeneric145he was at the show
Awesome man!
The best ever, after work hang out time, would be nerding out with these two guitar techs.
Very cool rundown. Love the Pumpkins so whatever information I can get in regards to how the sausage is made... i'm a fan! It's crazy to think Jeff has been with the band as long as the original members!
- Keep it simple
- Well, this isn't exactly simple...
🤣😂🤣
Awesome rigs and very cool to see Jeff walk us through his! Why did he opt to use Captor X load boxes when the Revv amps have those built in?
Epic, thanks
i like how Jeff’s rig is a mesh of new and analog tech
Love you, John! Take care & stay safe, Svanio =]
Really enjoyed this one.
I remember staring at his poster in a sports store... that space between his shoes and the floor!!!
Fire episode!
Great sound!!!!
Great dude!
8:18 Behringer is going to sell lot of that Octave Divider pedal soon....
Trace Davis! Your awesome!
as a guitar gear geek this was a geek fest , love the Pumpkins 🎃.....thanks all!
The first Rig Rundown was one of the first ones I watched and is still one of my personal favourites so it’s great to see them do another one with Jeff being included as well
Love it. Just wish moby knew all the details. Billy should have done it like he used to
Very, very cool!
Jeff is so f’n awesome
Billy’s Revs are some of the only signature series I really feel match the player to a T. Kai Hansen’s red-pink ESP V gives me the same feeling.
Jeff is a total guitar geek. Gotta love 'em!
So cool. Billy's new guitars sound great. You should get one.
That ES-335 appears to be the very same guitar Corgan played in the music video for Bullet With Butterfly Wings.
I think I might be in love with the purple one..
Wouldn't it be awesome to see the magic under the hood of those p
Floor controllers... like what line 6 effects and settings are used each song etc... I understand it would be rig rundown year, but as a helix owner and player I'd love to see and understand and be inspired by that... great rig rundown all the same.
That Firebird looks like the Elliot Easton signature Tikibird but with a changed pickguard and switches.
I was gonna comment that the secret voodoo isn't so secret - I see you know the secret too ;)
oooh, i was hoping to see the weird yamahas they had been playing in the past few years. Love the shape and wanted to know more about the guitars...
Hello,,,, really nice video and thanks for the timestamp....
Btw, that's a really nice Yamaha guitar 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Too bad Adam jones won’t do a rig rundown. Would kill to see his Fear Inoculum live set up
The old Tool rig rundown is good enough.
Billy's wall of amps is awesome, but Jeff's mix of digital and analog is more something I would do... If I was in a platinum selling band playing arena shows every night. Anyway, this was an excellent Rig Rundown. Cheers.
That Les Paul special is probably my favorite BC guitar.
Would love to see a rig rundown for The Matthew Good Band
Loved it…John’s the man!
Seeing Jeff do a guitar solo to Blue Skies Bring Tears live was a holy experience.
Enjoyed the rundown as alway. All the hammering while looking at guitars was a little unnerving though. Kept thinking “which guitar didn’t make the cut and is being destroyed” lol
I wonder if Billy still uses his fractal….maybe for tv appearances/performances ? Cool rundown.
Love to see, famous musicians, using the Yamaha revstars. I have a lot of guitars from different brands. But my revstar is my number one.
Love the Analogman T 🙌
Thanks guys!😔🎸👍🎸👍
Blows my mind, not a Strat or Fender single coil pickup on the road. Must have had a real falling out with Fender.
I guess Billy changed his mind on the Line 6 HX effects unit he was using a few years ago.
It was probably just a paid ad.
Billy can’t even be bothered to show up for his own rig rundown
'Mom, can I have James Iha?'
'We have James Iha at home'
James Iha at home: 11:07.
Is it just me or is Jeff's signal chain absolutely wild
I have that same les paul special. It comes with p100’s
“I dunno”
Jeff Schroeder seems like a "coffee and talk music" kind of guy. Awesome.
I woulda said the cabinet ISO cab, is the secret sauce to pumpkins sound for fun
Love that Premier Guitar doesn’t edit the swears!😄
Is this the rig they used for Hooray?? Sick!
I use the same Earnie ball strings for my sg standard 10- 46 slinky
"I dont fucking know man 😠🤫"
🤣🤣🤣
Jeff really knows his stuff!!! Any Guitar Knobs Podcast listeners!? Say hi!!!
yamaha guitars are definitely slept on. they usually play very nice, sound good and have a nice vintage vibe in most the models
He played humbuckers forever too. These are very similar to the strats.
Cool!

Not a Pumpkins fan, but this was one of the better episodes for me! Nice having Jeff Schroeder there; knows his stuff!
