Years ago a Scottish football coach got fed up with his well paid players complaining about being "stressed and fatigued" so one day he took them all to a building site and had them transporting bricks to the bricklayers for six hours (the usual hod carriers got paid to just watch). At the end he called them together and told his players that the guys they replaced did that five or six days a week for between eight to ten hours per day on one fiftieth of their money and had to pay rent, bills and feed their kids. I gather the whinging stopped.
I was raised in a trailer park and I had a wonderful teacher in HS that let me know, I am important. I have always struggled, but it is mainly with my own self doubt. I have a very similar story to yours. I am today a proud Mother of 3 and Grandmother of 3. Retired nurse and work PT in a Grocery store. I love my life and time with all my family.
I finally reached that point with my family. jail, drugs, drama....luckily I did military...MBA, entrepreneur, Real Estate, Yoga teacher, live 5k miles away and thank God! Dysfunction and ignorance are death. I never knew life would turn out this way, but we gotta take care of ourselves! Therapy and sobriety have helped ALOT!
I love my family, but there is a reason I didn't move up north with my dad when my parents got divorced. I can go to college where I am, but if I went up to the small rural town with him I would have had a nicer family life, but there are zero opportunities around there to make enough money to be comfortable. Down south I go to college for a Stats degree in the city near where I can get connections and make money. I don't need a ton, just enough for a decent house, a backyard, and enough internet to watch what I want when I want.
Imagine you made it out of the trailer park on your own after being abused by the step dad, and now your grown up adult kids that you provided for a life like they are the Kardashians, dont speak to you anymore because you left an unhappy marriage after some 20 years.
While he looked through the window in his trailer growing up, he said "yeah.... I'm not gon' be here" That's amazing that highly successful people actually know that.

Gary is so cool. My husband and I saw his stand up when he came to Huntsville. He was hilarious from beginning to end. He is also super down to earth and took the time to sign autographs and get pictures with everyone who wanted one.
Randomly was watching different videos. So glad I watched this interview. Gary needs to continue sharing his story with these kiddos that think the trainer park, the hood, the barrio is the end of the line. New respect for him. Kinda lived the same story.
Good for Gary...he’s been grinding for a long time. I’m so proud of how far he’s come. I do not know him but have followed his career for a while now. He’s seems like such a genuine person and genuine people are so few and far between that I wish he as bd his family nothing but the best!
He apologized multiple times and said that he felt like a bad host. Gary was there to promote so he wasn't going to leave. They even spoke about opening the door. Nothing else could be done.

It was good to hear his take on family. I've felt bad avoiding some family for years because I only hear from them when they need money. I help but don't get around to that part of the country and swallow in their poverty. I once was asked to find a lawyer for their divorce while I was already.paying utilities and their trailer rent. Couldn't go their then because it never stopped. Most times when the money stops, there contact with me stopped.
