This video highlights both the brilliance of Guardiola and Stones and how innovative this tactical change has been on modern football. Stones does not get the credit he deserves because the watching public still think of centre backs and holding midfielders as separate entities. When British football fans get asked to name top level centre backs they inevitably go for the likes of Terry, Adams, Vidic, etc. All defenders of the highest quality but primarily as defenders with one role. No one knows how to define Stones’ role yet - it hasn’t even got a name: Advanced centre back? Second pivot? Forward sweeper?
Just as Pep has fundamentally changed the perception of goalkeepers in this country, he’s now getting people to think of fullbacks and centre backs in a whole different way.

Now both Arteta and Klopp are trying to adapt with inverted tactics and we have seen both Liverpool and Arsenal's full backs are doing so..

Example of this would be our home game against leister city were we won 3 -1 due to 3 quick goals in the first half, but second half was something else cause pep took of rodri for Philips and we lost complete control of the midfield almost instantaneously cause Philips can't do rodri work and I don't think no one can do rodri work cause I don't think rodri has had a bad game all season even at the beginning when we were still finding our footing rodri was always there doing his job

The English love their English players - in a season where Haaland, De Bruyne, Rodri and Gundoan shined - Jonh Stones gets the podium?! 🤣How many of actually believe that Jonh Stones is more important than Rodri in that defensive midfield? You are going to say Jonh Stones with a straight face? Don't get me wrong - he is been fantastic but so has Akanji and Bernardo Silva and they don't get mentioned by anyone.

And yet he’s completely wasted by Southgate as he has to babysit Maguire for 90 mins a match.

He'll always be known as a swiss army knife but if people want good defending only, then no, probably not.

Lol you're talking nonsense. Stones purely as a defender is still world class.

@@FormerPessitheRobberfan I love Johnny, and yes he's world class but are we saying his defensive skills are up there with John Terry? I think we can be realistic without throwing shade. Not even Van Dijk competes with Terry defensively.

It's not true that you couldn't put any player in that role. Hell, Stonesy is only playing there because Rico Lewis showed the way.
