  • Oniyo is a festival held every year on January 7th at Daizenji Tamataregu Shrine. It is said to have originated in the year 368 on January 7th when Tamatare no Mikoto illuminated the night with torches at the Tamatare Shrine, searching for bandits who had ravaged the area and inflicted suffering on the people. He found and defeated them, taking their heads and burning them. With a tradition spanning over 1600 years, the festival involves six torches circulating the shrine grounds. In 1994, it was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the country and is counted among Japan's three major fire festivals.
