Flex vs. 2020T

Two of the best trimmers in the world today. The Silver JRL FreshFade 2020T ($110) is my favorite all around trimmer for the price, aside from the Supreme Trimmer Vader (Which is outstanding for $80).
I like the Stylecraft Flex, and it cuts really well, but I don't think it's worth $150. If they made a metal version without interchangeable housings (Maybe a Matte Black or a Matte Blue), I would definitely get behind it.

JRL did just that. The 2020T exceeded my expectations by miles, and every time I grab it, it puts a smile on my face. I think the SNAPFX is a SLIGHTLY better all around product, but I like the JRL slightly more. I reach for it more.

This was definitely a great review Clint. I am thinking of getting the JRL after having seen your Cyborg video. While I love the metal body and USB-C charging, I hate Zero-Gapping. This seems to be the easiest of all the trimmers out to complete that. Dude, Let me take a moment to thank you for such in-depth knowledge. I'd be absolutely lost and picking up something that doesn't quite consider the finer nuisances of ownership. You covered sound, strength, features, accessories, build quality. Mannnnnn... just awesome... you were built for this dude!

Gamma boosted trimmer review … would love to see it
I came here for the giveaway that I just heard about in the “shorts.” I’m obviously too late. I’m currently using the Flex trimmer every day on every client. You do have me intrigued with this JRL though.
@ReneeCaraway What I have learned is that BaByliss and JRL sit way at the top, far above every other brand. Their products are hated on by the biggest CZcamsrs because of money and greed. What you’re hearing from them isn’t real. I was misled for years thinking that Stylecraft was a top brand. After buying and using all these tools, Stylecraft is actually one of the lowest quality brands. They’re way down towards the middle-bottom, and I really dislike almost everything they sell.
As you can see in my reviews, I really care about quality. The differences between all of these trimmers is not the way they cut, it’s the details (The stand, the lights, the ergonomics, the run time, etc.). I can buy a $40 trimmer from Walmart, and if I set it right, and it’ll perform (lines and bulk removal) with the best of them.
TPOB is the best for the price. I like the TPOB X and XO trimmers more than the Flex (or anything Stylecraft sells) by a long shot. TPOB clippers are average.
Wahl makes great clippers but I don’t like their trimmers. The Senior and Magic Clip are the gold standard. They dominate. The Senior is way too heavy for you because it’s probably the most solid and well built clipper on the market. It feels like a $189 monster.
Gamma makes the Cyborg trimmer. Everything else they sell is blah.
Stylecraft is below Gamma.
Now… JRL and BaByliss make great “Everything.” I cannot stress it enough that I’m only purchasing products from both of them moving forward, because they’re so high above the rest of the pack. It’s almost not fair.

Great videos, i love the X trimmers but these got a great design i want to try!
You’ll love the JRL man, especially with the stand. I think the X has a better neck and shoulders, and I love that it’s made out of metal. I just like the JRL a tiny bit more all around. It’s an original product, unlike the X, and they’re so nice to look at and hold. They’re quieter than the X too.

You sir are the goat for reviewing trimmers ON THE WHOLE PLATFORM! I seriously mean that! I've spent so much time, just countless hours researching on which trimmers to go for and I just know I'm not the only one! I'm a barber student in the UK, and to say the least I've been very poor with upgrading my equipment. Money hasn't been the greatest being a student, but still... Now what I can say is this: I'll certainly be going into the new year with more confidence than ever knowing I got myself the right tool! All thanks to you! Honestly, thank you! Now for me to say all of that and reveal that I'm still yet to decided might sound hilarious haha. Reason for it is that I have a little request that maybe you could help all us viewers with... TPOB has finally released the Trimmer X's upgrade... The XO... Which I'm sure you've seen... And seeing that you loved the X so much and would've rated it even higher if it wasn't for the features... Well, I really feel he saw your video and listened to all your calls haha! Anyways, what I'm getting at is that I'd love to hear your take on it, and what better trimmer to put it up against than the JRL 2020T. I really appreciate the kind words. Here’s the dilemma with your TPOB question…
- The X is a knockoff of the Cocco BLDC.
- Same products, same plant in China, different branding.
- The XO is a knockoff of the Cocco Veloce.
If you watch my video about the Cocco Hyper Veloce (you should), I don’t like it as much as the BLDC (The X). They’re not even close. I don’t want to buy the XO at this point for three reasons…
1. It’s nearly identical to the Veloce.
2. I don’t think it’ll be better than the X.
3. TPOB and his team cut me off after my review of the Troll vs. X.
TPOB sends tons of products to sub-par reviews who do promo/advertisement videos for him, as long as they don’t call his products knockoffs, and they say it’s the best product in the world. I don’t want to support a business who doesn’t support transparency and the truth. I purchased both myself, and gave both of his trimmers excellent ratings. It wasn’t good enough because I pointed out their flaws, and I told my viewers what they’re knock-offs of.
I’ll gladly continue buying from BaByliss and JRL, who are the best companies anyway. If you haven’t checked out my website, I think you’ll get a kick out of it:

I must say, I totally understand why TPOB has left a sour taste as they’ve not been professional at all. But aren’t we just looking for the best product? As in your channel? In a lot of cases I can’t ignore the exact product I’m after just because I don’t always fully support the brand. If that makes any sense. Anyway, I respect your decision completely to not continue to purchase their products and I appreciate all of the back story. It’s just a shame.
So moving on, and after seeing you website and all ratings. Should I be purchasing the JRL trimmers then? Even tho the XO has potentially fixed what you said the X lacked. I’m tight ish on a budget so the JRL is the maximum price I want to pay on a trimmer, and conveniently it’s your all time favourite. Anyway what I’m trying to say is, do you think the JRL is still top although the XO is out…

You should definitely purchase the JRL ($110), and yes I think it’s a better product than the XO and the X. I put it at #1 because it’s the best trimmer I’ve ever used - By a long shot.
The 2020T is quieter than anything else, the build quality is outstanding, it’s the best at debulking, it’s the easiest to zero gap, BaByliss trimmer guards fit perfectly, the JRL charging stand is only $18, and it’s the only trimmer that doesn’t snag and pull my beard on my throat when I scoop… The Cyborg, Saber, Flex, Rebel, Hi-Viz, Boost+, X, etc. all snag on my lower beard, so I can’t even use them for that. The JRL on the other hand mows through it like butter. It’s a crazy world-class machine.
Now… The TPOB X ($104) is so good that I bought a second one two days ago as a gift for a friend (I got it on Amazon for $77 after tax). I love the X and the JRL, and wouldn’t trade either of mine for the XO.
Regardless of the XO benefits (The stand and USB-C), the core DNA of the XO (Veloce) isn’t as good as the X (BLDC). It’s just not. The X is so close to perfect, it’s almost not even fair.
If we’re removing the goodies in the boxes of all the products on the market and just talking about the physical trimmer itself, I think these are the best three:
1. 2020T
2. X
3. SNAPFX
Here’s my recommendation for you:
- If you want a metal hitter for $100, get the X. It’s far better than most $150-200 trimmers out there.
- If you want the best all around tool for slightly more $ than the X, get the JRL.

Hey Clint, do you happen to know if any replaceable blades from other trimmer brands fit the 2020t (and onyx). JRL replaceable blades are kind of hard to get in europe (especially the onyx replaceable blades).
I know Philthy Blendz makes an adapter for the trimmer to be able to mount Babyliss blades, but i was kinda hoping i wouldnt have to resort to buying that adapter as it is 24 bucks + shipping costs for just a piece of plastic.
New to the barber game and a new trimmer could really help me out! 🎉🔥

The Rebel is a piece of junk. It’s the exact same thing as the Gamma Boosted which is trash too.

Build quality i agree with you on nearly all your videos. But real world performance the flex punches alot harder lines than the jrl’s. For me if you want sharpe lines the JRL’s are probably one of the weakest on the market right now. I gave them to my apprentice to use on kids. But design wise babyliss and jrl for sure 👍🏻
Can’t argue with that. The Flex definitely hits harder, but something like the TPOB X absolutely destroys anything in that “Hitter” category (The Flex, Saber, FX Boost+, Hi-Viz, etc).
Funny thing is… Everyone says the 2020T doesn’t hit, which is nonsense. I have a gold one and a silver one (that I gave away). After zero gapping both of them, they hit better than 90% of the 30+ trimmers I’ve purchased. And they debulk better than ANY trimmer I’ve ever used. They’re the only ones that don’t snag hair on my lower beard too!
In my experience, the 2020T is miles ahead of anything on the market. They just dropped a brand new one with a new blade too, which improves the king as far as I’m concerned.

@@clintmallon i’d agree with that. My X trimmers are my current ‘go to’s’ for lines only. Blades so sharpe and thin it can snag under the neck. But purely for lines there up there. Thats before i mention the price also.
Can andis GTX guard be used for JRL? Please let me know if there is anything that can be used with JRL trimmer other than babylisspro!
I don’t think the Andis guards will work for the JRL 2020T. I know for sure that the BaByliss guards work though.

There's a new JRL Onyx trimmer. I haven’t come across any reviews on it yet, but S.Craft Blendz features it on his channel. It introduces a new method for zero gapping the blade, making it more precise

There are three main JRL offerings:
1. Clipper: ONYX
2. Clipper: FF 2020C
3. Trimmer: FF 2020T
This video is talking about #3. He/she was talking about #1.
All three of their devices are world-class. The only brand that makes anything that competes is BaByliss.

Was thinking the reason for that is bc he bought them in a combo but doesn't have an open box experience so don't know if that's even an option also probably could be bc the aesthetics are the same

I can’t update these videos on the fly, but I can update my website. After living with all these devices and learning more about the game, I’m going to leave the videos alone, because I have no choice (if I remove them, they’re gone forever), and I simply update my website with the current state of things.
Those videos take about 10hrs each, from start to finish. I simply don’t have time to redo them.
The website is and will always be accurate. The more information I gather, the more complete it will become. Every grown man should be able to change their mind and adjust their thinking, because life happens. Being introspective is key to producing quality.
Now, saying the Cyborg is #1, Saber #2, etc. was hypothetical. At that time, that’s what I understood. I was just giving an example. After understanding more about these devices, the politics on CZcams, and how crappy all the Stylecraft devices are that I’ve purchased (I have purchased 8 and will never spend another dollar with that company), the ranking on my website is generous.

I actually took both of these to my shop two days ago to let the guys try them. Out of three barbers, only one chose the Flex. That’s 3/1 in favor of the JRL if you’re counting me.
Now, I did zero gap the JRL, and the Flex is straight out of the box. The Flex looks and feels so damn cheap that I just can’t get behind it. If they made a metal version without interchangeable housings, I might like it more. Maybe a Matte Black and Matte Blue, and I’d be sold.
@@clintmallon Absolutely. Great perspective here. How a clipper feels in a persons hand plus the performance is a major part of the choice.
I can understand how it doesn't look or feel as premium as The JRL or a metal housing design.
I "zero gapped" The Flex and I enjoy using it. Really comes down to preference and performance.
I will eventually get another Saber because it initially made me a believer that SC finally had a great trimmer all around (preference + performance)
Agreed. The Flex does cut really well. I just don’t think it’s worth $150.
I’m going to be doing the Saber in Black vs. BoostFX in Gold next. Both are metal, and in my hands, they feel much more substantial than the Flex.

I haven’t tried the Wahl Cordless Detailer after selling my corded version. The next trimmer I bought after the Original Corded Detailer was the Gamma Absolute Hitter - which I thought was a better product.
I know a lot of barbers swear by the Cordless Detailer. Just haven’t given it a shot - yet! 😜

The blade of the gold Jrl trimmer is graphite or is just paint black color?
It’s a gold blade, not black. The gold one and the silver blade are not painted. I’m not sure what the material is, but it’s one of the only trimmers I’ve ever used that doesn’t pull and snag when I scoop my beard on my throat. They cut the same btw. And they’re the best all-around trimmers I’ve ever used. By far.
@@clintmallon sorry I mean the moving knife. That is black on the gold model and I thought if is graphite like the gold model on babyliss fx870. Because I have both babyliss fx870 gold and rose gold and the rose gold is silver color but the gold model is black like graphite or something like that and it does not heat like silver knife
@@grgeorgiadisgotcha. I’m not 100% sure, but I think it’s a DLC coating. It could be that the whole blade is a black material from the ground up, but I don’t think so because of cost. Most of these companies with black top blades or cutting blades just use a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating.
So you think it cuts smoother or better the blade of the gold model or both models has the same cut?
