"Never drive a car when you're dead." Invaluable advice I've lived by. Now, if I die by it, we'll see...

I actually like this version better than the live version. I like how it’s slower and the instrumentation is more sparse and echoing, sort of makes you feel like you’re in an opium den or something. And then of course the blaring organ at the end is the best part.

  • @FINNIUSORION

The organ at the end... no better feeling than that.

When I was a teenager, I passionately translated Tom Waits' lyrics into Polish. I didn't understand much, but I quickly understood that it was high-flying poetry, comparable to what Apollinaire or Rimbaud wrote ... In Poland, Tom's work is particularly appreciated, and the Polish national bard Kazik recorded the entire album with his covers.

A lot of Polish poster art reminds me of Tom Waits songs

We Poles have the hearts of Warrior Poets, every last one of us! Even those of us who never learned a word of Polska.

His lyrics are rather sophomoric … definitely not Rimbaud and other real poets. He’s a musician first, not some poet or writer. Lyrics are secondary and are meant to compliment the music.

The lyrics are either making references so obscure as to be incomprehensible, or else they are story with enough cut out as to be incomprehensible, or else they are a sequence of image-phrases meant to give impressions in your mind without necessarily being able to draw lines between them.

My favourite album by Thomas whilst signed to the Island record label. Swordfishtrombones is wonderful, Rain Dogs is too as are Bone Machine & The Black Rider.. , but Frank's Wild Years is the pinnacle.

Yes! I agree 100% . Frank's wild years, Rain dogs, The black rider, Swordfishtrombones... And now for some reason in my mind came the song "A sweet little bullet from a pretty blue gun"...

I love that this slower version sounds more off-kilter compared to the live version on Big Time which is faster and very groovy. Just goes to show how good this song is no matter the arrangement.

My dad used to play this song on the cars radio when I was younger, so glad I finally found it! But I swear it's missing a verse where Tom sings about stealing people's paychecks.

That Farfisa is going throughout... but still penetrates through 6 feet of concrete, as they do... "we'll just mix that down... we can't eliminate it. The only way to eliminate them, would involve some kind of time travel. And a shank"...

The best compliment I ever got was that a song I had sounded like king crimson was in a head on collision with Tom Waits.." although it scared me at first. I'm not really worried about being derivative... like the Beatles, I wear my influences on my skeeve... or maybe someplace more easily seen... the rim of my hat... if I wore one... but the problem with that song is that I managed to channel my muses effectively... usually I'm a poor mimic... and if you emulate someone poorly, then by process of elimination, you're being original... I just have to remember to be much less adept at mimicry... like Douglas Adam's once postulated... anyone can fly, once they master the art of throwing one's self at the ground and MISSING... the only reason we don't fly is because we lost the ability to miss the ground... that's why it's important to ignore everyone who is subject to the laws of gravity... they're a bad influence... just the look on their face as you fly by will cause you to hurtle down with a thus. Thus my point is... choose your influences, play well, fly if you can, and be the world's worst mimic. Great genius is never laid bare, but clad in other people's clothing and several layers of compost... believe me now, thank me layer.
