Mission Impossible was a popular TV show in the 60’s and was brought back in the 80’s as well. The character of Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) was the main character from the TV show. The opening theme was from the original show just updated.
Yeah, they did Jim Phelps dirty in this movie. I really hated this one because it was just worse than the show and was completely disconnected from the ethos of the show (they should have just given the movie series a completely different name). I like the later installments though just because they are great action films and now so far removed from the show it really doesn't matter.
In other words, this movie is what Charlie’s Angels would’ve been if it’s remake we’re any good

I'm watching the 60's tv show on Amazon Prime, I'm almost done with the 3rd season
Also, it was a TV-style opening - each episode had quick flashes of shots from that particular episode while an animated fuse ran across the screen, so they did the exact same thing.
M:I1, 2, and 3 are all good, albeit in ways that divide the fandom - they bounce around in style a lot as they work out the formula. M:I4, 5, and 6 have really zeroed in on something special and keep getting better and better. Really hoping to see you watch all of them!
Stunts just get more and more grazy. We probably see soon Tom Cruise in moon. At this pace they go, MI:9 or 10 will be on moon. Just enjoy the grazy ride and Tom Cruise running place to place :D

Agreed! Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation are outstanding! I’ve seen both at least ten times. I like Fallout a little less but they are all great.

M:I 4 (Ghost Protocol) is easily my favorite, mainly because it's the most similar to the show.
The reason Ethan suspected Jim was because of the bible. Max was working with someone who was using bible verse as their code name, so when he found a bible from the Drake Hotel that Jim had stayed at, he possibly started to suspect Claire, but then when Jim turns up alive and it all clicked for Ethan. Ethan's only concern then was whether or not Claire was working with Jim.
And ironically Jim's concern is whether Claire fell harder for Ethan than vice versa.
Funny that he is being self righteous about Ethan coveting his wife when he basically murdered all of their team - what was that old refrain about a special circle of hell reserved for traitors and he's getting pissy at Ethan making do me eyes at his wife.

The vault scene is nothing short of iconic cinema. The tension is built so well. I can tell you guys were on the edge of your seats.
Regarding the series, I agree with what others have said: 2 isn't the strongest movie ever, but it's worth watching. From 3 on, the series really picks up and finds its voice. 3 and 5 are probably my favourites.

Also just dropping him already married into #3 felt very lazy - I had no connection to the wife because they took no time to provide that for us.
This is why Isla Faust is a more compelling character - we meet her as Ethan does.
The vault scene was inspired by a movie called Topkapi.
13:13 - "Absolute silence!" Man, I saw this in a theater when it first came out. It was brilliant. There's no music or any sound in the movie at that point and, I swear, the entire theater was holding it's collective breath trying not to make a sound. It was so quiet, you could hear the sounds of the air conditioning equipment and the muffled sounds of other movies in adjacent theaters leaking into the room...
It's always such a lovely thing when cinema works its magic and that whole roomful of strangers goes into full immersion!

This is still my favorite film of the franchise. Brian DePalma's claustrophobic, Hitchcockian filmmaking style combined with modern day spy thriller. I also think it's one of Tom Cruise's best performances that gets overlooked. Cruise did this film the same year as Jerry Maguire and talk about 2 polar opposite characters in Ethan and Jerry! lol
Mission Impossible 1 was too complicated for most people, so they heavily dumbed it down the following film, that was a mistake. From 3 on the quality and balance rose and every film pretty much got better from there. I honestly love the first one, but the latest are pretty great as well.
I agree. I almost never rewatch the sequel. I really like the first one, Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation though. Easily my top 3.
I totally agree. I remember when it first came out I would rewatch to try and catch all the stuff I missed the first time. So cool.
I hope they don't stop reacting to the sequel films after watching MI: 2...but then again, I wouldn't blame them if they did 😆
I still love the first one for how perilous things seem for Hunt. I really like the sequels (barring 2) but things seem a lot more certain and Hunt seems way more in control

This movie series really finds its footing beginning with movie number three, and three through six are all absolutely phenomenal!
Fun connection: Jim Phelps in the TV show was played by Peter Graves, and the one other thing I know you've seen him in was Airplane! He was the pilot ("Have you ever seen a grown man naked?")
He was one of the group of actors asked to do Airplane! specifically because they were known as dramatic actors, which name the humor even better.
To be fair, Tom worked really hard to get this movie made, doing PR work behind the scenes that helped secure things like a fast train to be filmed on top of, not to mention that he took a fee of zero to make the film, to keep the budget as low as possible, and was working for a percentage of the gross. A wise move since his share amounted to something like $70 million. This has allowed him to get into the production side of the M:I franchise which in turn has given him greater control over the projects and greater leeway in the stunts he can do.
There are studio franchises, there are Director franchises, but Mission Impossible may be the only actor franchise... and it's bloody good.
Also, got to give it to Tom for his Twitter bio, which reads; "Actor. Producer. Running in movies since 1981."
They never shot a real train for this movie.
When the train wasn’t CGI it was it a partial prop train shot in front of greenscreens with fans blowing.
The backgrounds were all CGI.
They had a real helicopter, but it never made it into the movie.
Forgot to mention that a few shots used a model of the tunnel.
This entire series is worth watching. They are amazing 😍
The second movie is the worst of the series and it's still a 7/10 which is way better than most series can claim.
Mission impossible fallout is best in my opinion
The first M:I was directed by Brain De Palma, a very good director who loved Hitchcock. The second was directed by action director John Woo and you can see his influence very heavily. The third was directed by JJ Abrams and begins the real story line that follows.
I watched the original recently and forgot just how different they felt. MI2 almost feels like a soft reboot.
Recently binged all the movies in the series. Early ones are actually really good, and each one is unique in their own way.
The first and third are really good in their own ways. While the series has somewhat been overshadowed by Tom Cruise’s love for stunts, I do have to acknowledge that from the 3rd one on, they embraced the aspect of the TV show that was catered more to the team, as opposed to a singular character. While yes, Cruise’s Ethan is still the primary character, and we watch his crazy ass do ridiculous stunts, the movies still take the time to develop the supporting characters, and give them time to shine during missions.
The theme that Simone keeps altering to the 007 theme is the main theme from the TV series. It's one of the most iconic themes from American TV in the '60s and '70s. Written by prolific TV & film composer Lalo Schifrin who composed many, many iconic TV themes from that time. I usually group Schifrin & Ennio Morricone together for some reason possibly because Schifin pays homage to Morricone in his film score for Kelly's Heroes.
I used to watch the television show of the same name in the 70s - 80s, and this movie does a great job of honoring the t.v. show with the exception of turning the main t.v. character into the bad guy, which some fans did not like, but I found this fully enjoyable. And yes, the opening credits was a lot like how the t.v. show was. Each episode they would show scenes from the current episode in the opening credits, and the movies do the same thing. I also love that this was a Brian DePalma film, because he is my favorite director.
Yes some of us fans were angry because it is bullshit to leverage a property and fan base and then screw over the original like that. Lets see Tom Cruise keep up this atrisitc purity by having the final movie feature his character betraying his team to death just so you wouldnt see that coming.
I hate the turning of Jim Phelps. It so doesn't fit the character.
I saw this movie with friends and everyone who was a fan of the TV show became pissed. The first part was just like a regular episode.
But after everything went belly-up they just made an it into this heist/action movie.
They turned it from a team-based plot to a one-man-spy movie, which came out right after the hiatus of the original Bond series from 1989-1995.
I remember being very confused when they revealed Phelps as being the saboteur, I still thought why aren't they showing us the real villain …?
I later read that Greg Morris, one of the actors from the original show, furiously left the screening. I assume it was at that scene.
Peter Graves (Captain Oveur from Airplane!) who played the character a decade long also said in an Interview that he read the script and wished they "named the character differently".
The best part about this series of movies is that after the second one, they just keep getting better. Everything from 3 to the latest one are some of the best action films of all time
You two should definitely continue this series! The 2nd one is….let’s say not everyone’s cup of tea to not upset anyone, but the rest are fantastic!

I don’t get the hate the 2nd movie gets. When it came out people loved it. But it’s one of those things where it got so popular, people started copying it, then mocking it, parodying it and eventually became a joke. But at the time it was very well received.
@@EDTGO1 I sat through M:I 2 in the theater and I walked out wanting my two hours back. I don't even think the run time was two hours, but I wanted those two hours back. M:I 2 was the first movie I watched where I realized that I could completely hate a movie.
On the other hand, M:I 1 was the first movie I bought on VHS for myself with my own money.
The M:I theme music is pretty iconic in its own right. I think my favorite usage of it is in Ace Ventura.
I’ve always loved that aquarium shot when Ethan runs away from it. As a stunt, it is nothing compared to what’s coming in later flicks.
James Bond theme song trivia (since Simone is humming it when she hears the mission impossible theme). The classic James bond themes beginning was a retooling of a song from a quickly cancelled musical called "A House For Mr Biswas" written by Monty Norman, & based on the acclaimed novel by V.S. Naipul, about an Indian man with an "Unlucky Sneeze". When Monty Norman was brought in to do the soundtrack for the first Bond movie "Dr No" he changed the instrumental part from traditional Indian instruments to electric guitar and dropped the lyrics from his song "good sign, bad sign" from the failed musical and VOILA, the James bond theme was born. John Barry the great early composer for bond after Norman left added the big band stuff that most of us know the full song for but over the years Monty Norman defended the fact that he wrote the theme in court every time they tried to exclude him from credit. Anyone reading this should look up the song "good sign, bad sign" from the Mr Biswas play and listen to the bonkers lyrics and you will immediately recognize the beginnings of the Bond theme .
Shame you had to cut it but the triumphant cue accompanying the leap from the train onto the helicopter skids and then bringing in the series theme still gives me chills to this day. Was amazing in the theatre.
Danny Elfman did a great job with the music like usual.
I'm consistently impressed by De Palma's direction in this. Despite the script's somewhat shaky logic and dated tech clichés, the movie works like gangbusters because of the sophistication of its visual storytelling. The scene between Jim and Ethan in London is a thing of beauty.
John Woo's absurd visual tics, his penchant for melodrama, and Robert Towne's simultaneously overcooked and underdeveloped script make M:I2 a chore to watch. M:I3 is fun, but artless, and M:I4 is slick and smart but ultimately feels a touch hollow. Once Christopher McQuarrie takes over, the franchise approaches something like perfection, but there will always be a place in my heart for the first. De Palma applies such finesse to what could have been a frantic chase through techno-thriller tropes.
MI3 seems to get just mixed reviews, but I never understood why. I loved that one -- especially PSH as the villain, and also the twist with Billy Crudup. I did not see that coming. (That film also brings Simon Pegg into the series; and he's always a blast.)
The first part (in Prague) is very much like missions in the TV series put onto the big screen. The rest of the movie is acknowledging that it is on the big screen and doing it like they could have done back in the day if it were a movie. (that made more sense when it was in my head !!)
This movie was a massive change for him. At this time he was known for dramatic roles for the most part. Everyone laughed about Tom cruise being an action hero
I really hope to see you react to the rest of the currently released Mission Impossible movies. They somehow manage to ramp up the action and stories with every new movie.
I will die on the hill that this is one of the best franchises ever.

I’m sure someone’s already said this, but Mission impossible was originally a television series back in the 60s, hence why the intro feels like a TV intro, it’s a tribute to that
This was masterfully directed by Brian DePalma. He was basically a cult writer/director in the 70s, making small, critically acclaimed films. Then he directed Carrie (1976) which vaulted him into the mainstream. He continued doing his own movies but also began taking on mainstream directing jobs like Bonfire of the Vanities, The Untouchables, and this.

The scene at the table was Ethan thinking about what happened. And it was to show that he didn't know if Jim's wife was in it or not. He sees a version with her bombing the car and a version without her. That is why he disguises himself in the train. To know if she is in it.
The TV series premiered in the 60s and ran for 7 seasons. Jim Phelps was the main character. Fans of the TV series were pissed that they made him the villain in the movie.
The James Bond theme isn't totally out of place. The Bond films were all the rage in the 60s and spawned many film imitators as well as TV series. Along with Mission: Impossible, there was The Man from UNCLE, The Girl from UNCLE, I Spy, The Avengers (though that show started before the Bond films and became more Bond like), Secret Agent aka Dangerman, and the spoof Get Smart. One series, Burke's Law, started as a detective series and in it's last season they changed the format and title to Amos Burke: Secret Agent.
You should definitely keep up with this franchise. The first two films are rough, but 3 is good and from then on it gradually becomes one of the greatest series of actions movies of all time.
i know right george? tom cruise can play such a wide variety of characters and personalities, its really a credit to his talent as an actor..
Peter Graves who played Phelps in the TV show was asked to reprise his role in this movie. He initially agreed but understandably backed out after reading the script. That's why his character was recast with Jon Voight.
This is pretty much my ideal film series. Always excited for more.
The scene with Ethan and Jim sitting across from each other...Ethan is imagining how Jim could have pulled off the betrayal in Prague. One moment, he's picturing Claire blowing up the car, then he reconsiders, imagining Jim doing it himself because he doesn't want to believe that Claire has turned against them.
BTW the "unmasking" scenes are even better in the later films. They're unbelievable!

The 60s TV series was one of the shows my parents and my little sister loved, and I was crazy about it, so we rarely missed watching it as a family.
One of the few (or only) franchises that get better and better. Watch em all, you wont be disappointed

The aquarium scene actually happened 3 days ago in real life in a hotel in Berlin (perhaps minus the actors).
the tv series focused more on the team, everybody had a part to play and each of them had a speciality. this movie started similar with the team aspect.
Ethan is the master of disguise, Jack is the tech guy, Claire is the get away driver, Hannah is the overseer, Sarah is the scout that goes undercover before the team is brought in.
but it becomes the Ethan Hunt show and he's capable of everything.
Random comment : The CIA guy who gets poisoned is played by an actor called Rolf Saxon who lives in the UK. I used to meet him regularly at our local fencing club when he brought his son along. He’s delightful and great company.
This is one of the few movies I've gone to see in the theatre on opening night. My friends and I were big fans of the old Mission: Impossible TV shows as well as action movies in general, so we decided it'd be worth going to. Let me tell you, in the scene in the chunnel when the Mission Impossible theme song started playing, the whole theatre just erupted in cheers... They did such a great job of building the tension so we were all on the edges of our seats, and then when that familiar song started up it was just awesome.
You will absolutely love the next two movies, I look forward to seeing them come up on your schedule.

Working at a movie theater the summer this came out was crazy.
We had The Craft, Mission: Impossible, and a litle film called Independence Day all with huge crowds. I think i still have a Promo shirt from Mission: Impossible somewhere.
MI2 is a John Woo movie dressed up as a Mission Impossible move. It’s also the reason we got Hugh Jackman as Wolverine instead of Dougray Scott.

I've seen 4 of the Mission: Impossible movies (1-3 and Fallout), and this one is the one that, to me, most fits the name. The others felt difficult, but not impossible tasks overcome, while the vault scene truly feels like they're doing the impossible.
I was in Prague when they were filming this and couldn't wait to get back home to Canada to see it. It's still one of my favourite of the series. It's much more of a sneaky/spy movie than an action flick like some of the later movies. Great series to watch though.
The Mission: Impossible was basically this in a 1-hour format with a WAY smaller budget. One of the team members was Leonard Nemoy. When this came out, fans of the TV show were upset because the "twists" in this one basically crapped on the entire original team.
The second one suffers a bit from "Director Trademark."
From three on, they go back to the more plot twist, multiple double cross, spy-craft character development type of stories and they all hold up.
Another movie worth a mention here is "No Way Out" with Kevin Costner. It's a super tense suspense film from the late 80's.
The train scene was on a TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse or High Speed Train), a french train. At that time those trains could go at a 320 Km/h (199 mi/hour) on some parts of the french network. They had the record on rails at 515Km/h (320 mi/h). In 2007 they even set a world record on rails at 574.8Km/h (357.16 mi/h) on rails that is currently unbeaten.
The TGV also set a long-distance speed record on May 26, 2001 with the Calais - Marseille route (1,067 km or 663 mi) in 3 hours and 29 minutes, i.e. an average of 306.3 km/h (190.32 mi/h)

It was a lot more "spy craft" because that's what the 60's TV was like. I'm glad they kept the original intent (also, the self-destructing mission invitations).
As been previously mentioned Mission: Impossible was a 1960s TV show. Jim Phelps was the boss from Season 2 thru Season 7. He was portrayed by Peter Graves (brother of “Gunsmoke”’s James Arness) One of the original IMF agents was Barney Collier played by Greg Morris.
In the 1980s there was a sequel/reboot of the series. Peter Graves, portraying Phelps was the only one who came back on a regular basis. One of the characters was Grant Collier, son of Barney Collier from the original series. He was portrayed by Phil Morris, son of Grant Morris who played Barney.
For the 1996 Tom Cruise movie, the ORIGINAL plot made it absolutely crystal clear that the movie was canon with the series. The movie was a sequel to the 2 series. Phelps, played by Voight & not Graves, was the exact same Jim Phelps from the TV series.
Phelps set up Ethan Hunt because they had Ethan & Claire in an affair. However the love triangle was considered a distraction so they cut it out. Also they did edits that only implied that it was the same Phelps character from the series. Supposedly the idea was very negatively received by the series casts & test audiences who loved the original 60s series. Like Star Trek it had a huge following via syndication. None of the TV cast was asked to appear in the movie, not even in a non-speaking cameo.
Peter Graves hated what they did with the Phelps character. Grant Morris (Barney Collier) went to see the movie. He left about 1/2 way through it, hating it.
Yes the TV show vibe in opening credits was intentional as this is a call back to the popular TV show of the 60's, same theme tune too.
If he was making this today, I’m pretty sure that a) Tom Cruise would insist that the entire final train-roof scene was shot on the actual roof of a train while it was going at 150mph, and b) in order to get on the train, he’d have to ride a motorbike after it.
Anyway, it was a very enjoyable experience to see this at the cinema, pretending to know exactly what was going on… but now I’ll never be able to watch it without Simone humming the James Bond theme!
I went to the theaters last week and they had a promo for the latest MI movie. It wasn't a trailer, but a few minutes of behind the scenes of one of Tom's stunts for the movie. Dang, that man is dedicated to his craft. Seeing that made me want to watch the movie, without knowing anything else about it.

GEORGE, The original "Mission: Impossible" series was very successfull series that ran for 7 seasons, from the late 60's to the early 70's. It was owned by Desilu Productions, who were shooting the original "Star Trek" TV series on their sets at the same time. There is a gap in these films as Tom Cruise was fired around the couch jumping incident and he wasn't rehired for several years. Merry Christmas, Simone & George!!!🎄🎄🎅🏽🎅🏽🎁🎁

Believe me, a few movies in, you completely forgot the James Bond theme. The MI theme is iconic in itself.

One of the ongoing themes of the TV series is the IMF team has a controller, tech guy, strong man and two actors/makeup experts. With the occasional expert.

Hopefully, this will lead to more Brian De Palma movies and / or even episodes of the original 1960's Mission Impossible tv show.
The train at the end is the TGV. It hold the record of the fastest speed reached by a train when the movie was shot.
Hannah (the agent who used the special sunglasses on the staircase) was the one who got in the car that exploded, not Claire (the wife). For me, the MI franchise didn't start to take off until MI3. MI 2 was another John Woo formulaic flick (always the double guns and slo-mo action scenes) that was just silly.
When this movie was released in 1996, I saw it in the theater with the woman who would become my wife 2 years later. When Tom Cruise unscrewed the light bulb with his jacket and spread the pieces around, I whispered, "I do that every time I come home." She replied, "So do I." and I added, "But I use my roommate's jacket." We laughed about that one for a long time.
They built the largest/more powerful "fan" at the time for the train's roof scene. And TC made the "magic trick" with the diskette for real.
This series only gets better. I like the older ones but dang they get amazing after 3

As someone who flies on helicopters for a living the scene at the end with the helicopter has always bothered me for any number of reasons, but the MOST unbelievable part in this whole movie is that Ethan could pass himself off as Jim Phelps! John Voight is a whole head taller than Tom Cruise. ; )
Mission Impossible was such a fantastic series in the 70s. Every episode opened with that theme music and a burning fuse. The lifelike masks were also a recurring trope in the original series. These movies get better. I keep waiting for one to flop and they never do.

1, 2, and 3 are good. 4-6 are GREAT! 2 is absolutely bonkers, but still fun. 3 is a lot more serious, then 4-6 are just incredible. So much fun. I'd love to see you watch the rest of them.

Jon Voight's character is the main character of the show. He was originally a good guy.
This movie took a bold ass risk when they made his character the villain.
But it made for an epic twist filmmakers dream of pulling off

But the Misison Impossible theme is miles better. That pumping 5/4 rhythm gives it such an urgency.
Saw this in the theater. During the vault scene you could have heard a pin drop. Everyone was dead quiet.
...for me the best part is the main title music, great cover of the original theme...

Excited about the possibility of you guys getting into this series more. 2nd is so-so but the rest are quite entertaining.
