Reinhard Mey is one of the most important German singer/songwriter. Born 1942 in Berlin, he is 81 years old now. He wrote the song 1986. Unfortuneately his second son was ill and died 2014 as a 32 year old. I love this song. There is a new version he did 2020 with his friends. It is beautiful and important. I served in the military myself and i have first hand experience what the face of war looks like. I had several comrades who didn't make it back home. Fathers and sons alike. Never ever I'd give any of my children to them.
Reinhard Mey is a real german bard, a master of the german language with real important, romantic and comedy aspects in his songs. You have to take a look at Reinhard Mey und Freunde (Reinhard Mey and friends) who did a very powefull version of this song.
I'm Polish, long time ago I learnt German and when I discovered Reinhard Mey I was absolutely fascinated by his music and his magic, touchy voice. I also liked a lot Jim Croce, don Mclean, James Taylor. I love this kind of music although some people say it's boring but not for me. Those singers have so much to say through their music.

Reinhard Mey is a visionary who nailed falsehoods and pretense of what life is and should be like for everybody except those in power. His songs from so many years ago like "Weils in der Zeitung steht" (Because it's written in the newspaper) and "Über den Wolken" (Above the clouds) are possibly more applicable and relevant today than they were when I first heard them eons ago.
I have troubles not to tear up every time I hear this song. I am 49 now, was a supporter of the peace movement and now they are talking about mandatory service again in Germany as a result of Russia’s threats. It’s like the clocks turning back on so many levels. I find myself in peril, wondering what else to do to prepare yourself for such a scenario.
Mey is probably the archetype as a German songwriter. All his songs are accompanied by his tranquil and very deep guitar play. There are a number of great songs to check out: Lots about perspectives of parents but some also political and often with a good sense of humor or irony. I am just not sure if there are many good videos with English subtitles.
He basically made a whole album about parent/fatherhood called: Mein Apfelbäumchen - My Little Apple Tree.
Just his melodies are beautiful to listen to.
He is one of the greatest songwriters of Germany together with Grönemeyer. Similar generation.

Ja, die Entwicklung bereitet mir ebenfalls Sorgen. Ich kann mich des Eindrucks nicht erwehren, dass es nicht mehr um Frieden vorrangig geht bei manchen Medien/Politikern. Obwohl wir doch gelernt haben sollten, wie wichtig Frieden ist.
I think it was 2014, when I read a speach of the french President at the time and noticed that the lessons of the 20th century had been completely lost or maybe it was just that he thought the post-WW2 filter wasn't needed anymore. What he said felt very 1914 and it has only been downhill from there on. (coincidence that it was the french President, could have been any other countries politician as well)

Since you mentioned all the dead in russia's latest invasion, i feel the need to point out that Reinhard Mey sadly feels peace at all costs is more important than the rights of the people that got attacked.
I greatly appreciate his music but don’t agree with some of his political views. Peace can not always be achieved with entirely peaceful means. We had pacifists in Sweden that claimed the Russian ”president” would be impressed if Sweden should decide to remain neutral. I strongly disagree.

In Germany they lived in the middle of the war. Many civilians died. And still afterwards my grandparents named it the Befreiung. They knew, that the allies had rescued them from a dictatorship.
Reinhard Mey has experienced as a child what it is like to live in ruins. With traumatized parents and teachers and a big portion of the population killed, missing in action or with missing limbs. He is the generation who fought against the neglect. His generation has established in the 70s that we still study all the atrocities and how they could come to power. In order to prevent something like that to happen again.
