In this Film Courage video interview, Film Threat founder Chris Gore shares his love for the movie "Blade Runner" with its influential world-building, sci-fi, and Harrison Ford's performance. He believes it predicted the economic divide we experience today. He thinks some films are worth watching repeatedly, like "2001: A Space Odyssey," while others are forgettable after one viewing. He strongly dislikes live-action remakes, and questions their success as mere babysitters for families. He admires the filmmaker SS Rajamouli and his epic movie "RRR."
Chris Gore is a writer, comedian, author and television personality who has built a solid reputation as a hilariously outspoken voice in the entertainment world. As a teenager, Chris founded the brutally honest magazine Film Threat, which began as a fanzine while he was a college student in Detroit. As Film Threat evolved into a respected national magazine, he relocated to Los Angeles. The print magazine was retired in 1997 when it was re-launched as a web site. FilmThreat.com found a huge audience online and was named one of the top five movie web sites by the Wall Street Journal. Chris has appeared as a film expert on MSNBC, E!, CNN, Travel Channel, and Reelz Channel. Chis has also hosted shows on FX, Starz, IFC and G4TV’s Attack of the Show as the show’s film expert. His weekly movie review segment DVDuesday was among the most popular on G4. Chris is also an author, having written The 50 Greatest Movies Never Made and The Complete DVD Book. His book The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide is considered the bible of the industry and is required reading at film school.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Is Chris Gore still collaborating with film courage??
Chris Gore is the coolest movie critic ever.
No that would be Tarantino.
@@CelestialWoodway I am a Tarantino fan. I haven't read Cinema Speculation yet. Not sure if I will. Regardless, Film Threat is excellent.
He's certainly the film critic with the most common sense.
By a wide margin
hands down
I love these interviews!
The Honourable Judge Gore is the man!
Lol he is just the modern equivalent of Dana Carvey's Church lady. A 60 year old man whining about disney movies. It is sad and pathetic.
Does 'Frank' Gore go into a phone booth to change into Judge Gore?
@@ilari90 Frank Gore was a great running back for the 49ers. Chris Gore is a whiny snowflake who morphs into the church lady to tell people how offended he is by people far more successful than he'll ever be.
Chris Gore seems like a chill, fun person to hang out with. I would get a 50 pack of tacos and just listen to him share his insights all day.
50? Jeez I love tacos as much as the next guy…
I LOVE it when Chris comes on, please bring him back!
I never tire of hearing Chris discuss the film industry. Thank you.
Cheers!
I would love Chris Gore to talk about why Disney's remake of Pinocchio was a disaster that just didn't work versus why Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio was a masterpiece, instant classic and deeply moving. I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned when contrasting how Disney versus how del Toro approached re-telling this classic story. I also agree 100% with Gore's take on Disney remakes. I wish Disney would just stop with the endless remakes and focus all that energy, time and money on developing new ideas, telling new stories. There's countless other folklore and fairy tale stories they could dig into.
The last film I watch from Disney that wasn't terrible was Pixar's Soul which was an amazing film from start to finish but it baffles me that one half of Disney can make something great while the other half makes terrible business decisions and keeps making these cynical remakes of their older (much superior) animated films that only squander their legacy.
I mean look at other animation studios like Ghibli they have an iconic legacy of films but unlike Disney who doesn't care about their legacy and turns their legacy into cynical remakes Ghibli on the other hand doesn't want their films to become a big franchise or have a remake because Miyazaki knows his films have a legacy and doesn't want to squander it like Disney has with their live action remakes.
Which is sad because Disney is capable of making amazing films with stories that both kids and adults can enjoy there were movies weren't just made for kids.
@@maxtubb8560 Disney " were" capable of making great movies. Not anymore, Not without a radical change in management and approach.
@@robertdouble559 I'm well aware that Disney don't make great movies anymore, that's why I miss old Disney because they cared about their craft and wanted tell stories that both kids and adults can enjoy.
Because Del Toro cared about the project, and stayed true to core themes. Pinocchio is a story about growing up, transience and how precarious choices can be. Earning a soul through overcoming struggle, to achieve high character. Disney think this stuff is “old fashioned” and want a bald black blue fairy.
@@RampantDaydream Agreed, I can't stand these live action remakes Disney keeps pumping out every year there completely pointless and they feel very cynical and corporate.
There's just something about animation that you just can't recreate in live action.
I really do miss old Disney they were the ones who really sparked my love for cinema and animation but nowadays all they care about is making money and making terrible business practices sometimes now occasionally they will a great film like Pixar's Soul but then they go back to making cynical remakes and bad business decisions like they usual do.
It's interesting what Chris said about the value of a "Star" today. I completely agree with Chris' viewpoint on this. I think of it the same way when I was younger in the 90s listening to music. Music had so much value because you had to go to your local store, invest in the CD/Tape. Because of the investment, you'd listen to the same album over and over and over again. You would know the lyrics, and you would anticipate the next song when another ends. All the streaming services we have in this day and age, it has removed the value from the music industry. We just set a "Radio" playlist and go about our day. It's somewhat sad. Since we can know everything about "famous people" it takes away the intrigue. Knowing the "stars" point of view of things can actually turn you away from being a fan.
Blade Runner is a perfect pick. This very week I learned about a short film that pays an incredible homage to Blade Runner. It's called 'Slice Of Life'. I couldn't recommend it enough. Quite possibly the best low (or no) budget sci-fi short out there. Ridley would be proud.
Blade runner is my favorite movie so I just looked at the trailer when read your comment and look forward to watching it, great recommendation 👍
@@joeodonnell921it already exists you have to look for it
A movie I can watch over and over again is any Eastwood spaghetti western. They are simply fantastic. Think I’ll go watch one right now in fact. 😉
Love them, but High Plains Drifter will always hold a special place in my heart.
GBU is the best of them
How was it
I remember that speech from Soderbergh, and thought of it as soon as Chris said "Do something creative..."
I was a much younger man, but remember that speech so well because it moved me.
Today, for the writing I do now, and the dreams I am working on fulfilling to publish, it gave me chill bumps to hear Chris speak of doing creative things, invoking that speech. Thank you, for I too now have a new hope.
Great comment, thanks for posting!
Blade Runner is one of those masterclass films. Top shelf atmosphere and worldbuilding. There is also something oddly comforting about seeing people continue to survive, even in a less
than ideal future. The soft glow of neon makes it all ok, somehow. It was a film I've never seen in a theater, but I enjoy so much just watching in the quiet of my art cave, drinking in the ambient soundscape.
I love this guy. I could listen to him and the interviewer all day long, you are both fantastic. Also, the advent of reality television was the beginning of the end of TV IMO.
Look what it did to things like the "History" Channel, among so many other examples. Shows you could tune into to see some cool stuff and learn something are now like "We got a guy who can break boards with his farts!"
The Bounty(Gibson Hopkins version). Last of the Mohicans. Masters and Commanders. The Mission. Close Encounters. Alien.
Big up people who appreciate Last of the Mohicans!
@@Roxor41 Blows me away every time.
@@Roxor41Absolute masterpiece on so many levels. And that theme song, good lord.
Last of the Mohicans and Heat are masterpieces.Michael Mann is a credit to the industry, and I am sure his father Anthony Mann would be proud of him.
NB,Anthony Mann made films like El Cid, Heroes of Telemark,A Dandy in Aspic,aa well as westerns. And two Roman epics = Quo Vadis and Fall of the Roman Empire ( greatest Roman epic ever made).
I love your interviews with Chris Gore!
16:10 a perfect example for me is "Tarzan 2". The first one had me captivated as a young kid. You could see and feel the work put into it. The sequel just looked like a cheap Saturday morning cartoon. As a child i could see the difference and i refused to watch more than half of it before shutting it off.
I believe it in fact launched the cartoon series. They did that with a few other movies like lilo and stitch as well.
Tarzan = Johnny Weissmuller. End of.
Movie I’ve seen more than a dozen times that restores my faith in cinema: Heat.
I was watching 101 Dalmatians with Glenn close and Jeff Daniels the other day because i genuinely like the movie and greww up with it (the animated one as well) then it hit me. This is a live action Disney remake! I was racking my brain with "how did this work and all the new ones fail?" And it wasn't the only one before Disney started throwing them out like they do now.
love this interview, very informative and very wholesome :) Speaking so much truth to the film industry
Very good!!! Objective and informative.
Great Interview! Very inspiring!
I completely agree with the analysis and description of RRR and the Naatu Naatu dance is one of the most incredible highlights of musical filmmaking I've ever seen. I hope this interview will help publicize it and more people will be able to enjoy this masterpiece of cinema, filmmaking, music, and the storytelling medium as a whole.
One of the best movies that I can re-watch and enjoy over and over is Where Eagles Dare. It's difficult to label exactly why, but I always enjoy it.
Incredibly grateful I was able to watch this movie with my dad as a kid before he passed. Thanks for the reminder, I only saw it once as a kid and loved it. Now at 40 I need to see it again.
It’s a great men on a mission movie. One of my dad’s favorites
Another great interview with Chris.
I needed this interview.
Great dude, great questions!
Grats on 100k subs Film Threat!
Chris has such an honest approach to talking about film. Without filter or agenda. His love for Logan's run makes me feel good about loving the film also.
This long interviews with him are brilliant to listen to.
Chris Gore and The Critical Drinker are my two favourite film critics. They don't mince their words and they call it as they see it. My full respect to them.
Critical Drinker is spot on with his review of the Barbie movie. I saw it yesterday with my wife. (I owed her a movie bc I've dragged her to enuff action & fantasy) and there are funny moments but it's the most unnerving, politically charged POS that I've seen in awhile.
AZ & Disparu are also really great.
@@proto-geek248They are ok. But when they are annoying and soap boxy its way over the top.
+1 for critical drinker. Dude cuts to the core and says it like it is.
Chris is so consistent/good at putting the question in his answer. Found that so hard to get with my interviews and it's so nice in post!
Great interview
Thank you for the timestamps
Good interview.
Great interview. I could listen to Chris talk about grass growing and find it interesting
Also, hail the Honorable Judge Frank Gore
Not sure if Chris will ever read my comment but I thoroughly enjoyed "RRR" Chris. You were spot on. I loved it as much if not more than Bahu Bali. I've become a fan of Tollywood. I would encourage anyone reading this to see these movies. Especially if you enjoy any action/love story movie with a dance number thrown in! There's a certain feeling of affection you draw from these movies.
Thank you Chris for being so honest and direct about your views on Hollywood and the movie business. Your views always get my attention. You are right on the mark as far as I'm concerned. Also Happy Birthday! Also thanks to the interviewer! Good questions!
I've seen Blade Runner over 10 times since I was 9 yrs old and it never gets old.
That episode of Seinfeld,
“You were making out during Schindler’s List!!!”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i often reflect like this on rewatches but with sitcoms. Watching Frasier, Seinfeld Married with children and so on as an adult is very different with real life experience.
What is the best movie and the worst movie you have seen in the last year?
Best movie, anywhere, everywhere all at once
Worst move: hocus pocus 2
Haven’t been any good movies in my opinion this past year. I’ve been more focused on tv shows since the pandemic and they are just better.
Best movie: Interstellar
Worst movie: I avoid bad movies
Best: "UFO" (2018 prod.) feat. Gillian Anderson and David Strathairn(I swear, that man has never done a bad performance!). A sci-fi that in pace and tight narrative control reminded me of "Moon"(2009 prod.) by Duncan Jones.
Worst: Renfield(2023 prod.)
Bonus info: Best series, by far! : "Silo", a 'tour de force' performance by Rebecca Ferguson.
Just watched Interstellar... love that movie!
I love Chris Gore. Can't wait to watch Attack of the Doc
Love the section about live action Disney stuff. Hilarious!
Best: Gumball Rally, Worst: Cannonball Run II 🚗🚓
I love listening to this guy
Mr. Gore, your analysis at 3:00 about how movies change as we age and how, therefore, they are a reflection of us is 100% spot on. I totally agree. Amazing thought.
A decade ago there were many more really small-budget indie films that were telling great, universal stories. "Coherence" from 2013 is one such little gem, filmed over a weekend, mostly improvised dialogues, but it works incredibly well. Female main character btw, but without any finger-wagging lecturing going on. I feel that these types of films have become much more rare.
I swear if I was a major studio executive, I would hire this guy as a consultant because he really knows his stuff and has great insights
A recent film that I would highly recommend seeing is Mad God. Absolutely fantastic stop motion horror.
Glad we have guys like this to spare us from wasting hours on some of this tripe.
Excellent take.
Dude Logan's Run is so good, highly recommend
Way to go Chris! I dressed as Alex for a def Leppard concert that was on Halloween! And some people actually knew who i was! Even the guys in the band pointed me out! 😂 was a great moment.
I re watched the matrix reloaded so much I memorized the script as a teen. I still enjoy the film especially if you think of it as a stand alone action film. Lord of the rings trilogy is also a great reminder why I love film making.
My special bond with Chris is our love of Logan’s Run and the impact it had on me as kid.
When was this interview recorded ?
What would your "Dear Hollywood" letter be?
Dear Hollywood: stop.
Dear Hollywood,
You had ONE job...
Get back to making great films.
Dear Hollywood, you've forgotten that Hollywood needs Cinema. However, Cinema doesn't need Hollywood.
I sincerely wish that you return to your senses and abandon your modern/current self destructive behaviors.
Furthermore, I painfully fear that tinseltown's suicidal actions are irreversible at this time.
-Rise of the independents.
Avoid any semblance of "woke". Even the slightest hint of it is off putting. We're done with it!
I love how it’s a trope that “modern/younger audiences have no attention span” but then we listen to Chris Gore just talk for 90 minutes. It’s not a short attention span. It’s just getting tired of modern media that is low quality. Give us quality and we will pay attention
Blame the parents
Yes! At the opening question, before he answered, I thought to myself, Godfather and Bladerunner!
THAT ----> 18:11
Is the most accurate description of 20th century Disney Movies i have ever heard. Spot on, and it goes for all of their new movies.
I was watching RRR again two nights ago and today I found this video . Amazing film . I think I have watched it 7 times , 3 times in theatre and 4 or 5 times at home .
My answer to question 1: Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil'
Much of Bladerunner's visual style when it comes to the cities, comes from Moebius' 1975 comic 'The Long Tomorrow'.
Dude brought up "Godfather 3" opening on Christmas! LOL I remember when that dropped and was like, "wait, they're going to put out the "Godfather 3 on Christmas?" (and the clip of the guy falling down the staircase "Rated R")
Movies are brands. Branding 101 is when try to appeal to everyone, you end appealing to no one. Just like in marketing, know your audience, disregard the other noise.
I love this.
Need more subs options, I want to show this to so many dear people that do not speak english.
The youtube TV app sucks a$$ and doesn't have the same options.
My favorite part
Word.
Have you guys done a review and discussion of Andor ? That and Rogue One make me want a remake of the whole star wars movie series with that level of acting and visual beauty.
Agree that Favreau's Jungle Book is the only Live-action remake really worth watching.
I love this guy.
The most impactful scene I've watched was the ending of the movie 'Mist'
To be honest, one of the biggest reasons why I didn’t like some of the live action movies from one of the most beloved classics (like Mulan), was that they took out what I loved the most about them. “And what are you, a cow?”
So heartbreaking. Not to mention their clothes made the movie way too fake when I think they were trying to make it a serious movie?
omg.. the , moment he said Blade Runner i got chills. THE BEST.
I just watched a movie's worth of interview about the movies and I'm totally ok with that. :)
The timing of these live action peter pan ads makes me feel like I'm being trolled by the universe
American filmmakers should hibernate for a year to do nothing but watch RRR and take notes. Watching RRR awakens you to the fact that we've lost our way.
The Game, The Spanish Prisoner, The Fisher King, Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood
The list goes on.
Got to give credit to Syd Mead's brilliant futurist designs. If not for him, Bladerunner would be a quite typical sci-fi and other genre blend -like Outland. And 2001 would have been a snoozer without the spectacular SFX of John Dykstra and his model-making team.
Chris cracked me up talking about the pile of feces in the Pinocchio movie😂
Love this interview. I’ll “agree to disagree” when people who disagree with me aren’t actively trying to put my friends in jail for existing. But I agree with most of this interview.
"Woke-ness" and "anti-woke-ness" has not only flooded into our movies but our movie reviews (especially CZcams) so it is great when someone like Mr. Gore does a critique rather than just be a critic. He provides a great insight into the film community and film industry that is not only entertaining but is educational. Great video... look forward to more like these.
My own answer to the opening right now is any of the John Wick films. I probably have seen all of then upwards of 15-20 times. It's the first movie I put on for friends if they haven't seen them.
How would you rate them from best to worst?
@@filmcourage hard to say. My personal preference is 2, followed by 4, then 1, then 3, at least for today. 2 is the one that hooked me on the world of The Continental and so I have a soft spot for that one, but as for trying to be objective about which is the best, they all scratch different itches I guess, so it's more about going with which flavor you're feeling that particular day.
Thanks for posting!
He does make a lot of sense.
3:52 i really wished you ran a streaming service. When you mentioned Logan’s Run, I’m like damn … I should watch that now.
On a side note, cinemas should just hold showings of these classic movies instead of modern garbage.
We need to mine the 17th and 18th century for movie content in my opinion. I think the model of marvel having seperate stories and then having those stories come together can be redeemed for different sagas from 17th and 18th century.
Shame his iron doesn’t work, but thanks for the brilliant interview. ;-)
Survivor is a show from Sweden called expedition Robinson, later sold to America, not sure that gameshow aired in Sweden.
Agreed 💯
I met him, very humble dude. And very knowledgeable.
How about "Grave of the Fireflies" for movies you only watch once
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Logan's Run, I saw it when it 1st came out in the theaters, soooo many times since.
And I own the bluray
And me like 'pleeese say bladerunner, pleeeeeese say bladerunner' and boom!
What a wise critic. I have never imagined that I will say something like that.
The message of the "this bullet is worth more than an Indian life" trope is not pro-gun, but itself is an attack on the sociopathy of the British occupation.
They are shown valuing objects more than human life.
The movie is also not pro-gun politically, but observing the FACT of guns and freedom, as even pacifistic Gandhi noted:
"Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest."
Chris is the best kind of Film Critic in that he is also a Film Maker. Personally I've always found this odd being that we'd not except this of any other profession.
Imagine parents being Counseled on matters of their child by not an actual Dr. but an `Expert' in researching/studying Child Care!!!
Typically we expect a Critic to actually have experience in what it is their talking about. Actually,Chris said as much in this very interview. In his own words of course. He was talking about watching stuff you hate because it gives you credibility to Critique it. 1:04:00
Which again shows the genuine character of this man. Probably thee single most trustworthy Film Critic alive right now. Honest with well thought out intent & as unbiased as possible.
Tech Noir was the genre of Blake's 7 (1978-81) which even has a femme fatale. Being English, Ridley Scott likely saw it.
To be fair: I'd assume paying 20k extras in India comes much cheaper than casting 20k extras in the USA. You don't pay them that much, you don't have to obey so many safety/workplace rules and regulations and you don't get sued into oblivion if something happens to one of them.
If you want a movie that you can watch more than 12 times and still be awed by it - check out the 1985 New Zealand Sci Fi film: The Quiet Earth. I've watched that more than a dozen times and it always astounds me. :-)
Love that movie, but don't watch the trailer-- it gives it all away.
@@lordsomber Yep I think you're right! ;-) Don't watch the Quiet Earth Trailer! haha!
Glad you were able to interview Chris Gore and not his evil twin, Frank Gore. Seriously, great interview and I really enjoyed this. Cheers.
I want to see a animated version of Old Yeller
One & done: Mystic River.
Great film, but I can't do that again 😬
Oddly enough, Wind River (Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olson) is pretty close for me.
