local mechanic told my daughter the stiff gear change is caused by cracked synchronisers and she needs a new gearbox. £1200. after googling the symptoms we found this. we are not mechanics but followed the video and 2 hours later problem solved! thank you Cyd

Awesome, I love reading comments like yours. Thing is, that garage owner could have done the same research. £1200 seems very steep. You could have had a new clutch and a good 2ndhand box refitted for about half that.

Probably pulling a cowboy move cos she's a younger women. My mechanic told me he has known people to see single mums with babies and make stuff up about suspension being unsafe to get a "big job" out of them. Glad you researched cos that's a joke £1200 worth more than the car nearly

Much appreciated! I junked music ages ago in favour of more detailed editing (close ups, pictures etc) and I think people prefer it generally. And switching to a wireless lav mic really helps with consistent and clear vocals. Not always 'perfect' but then, these aren't Pinewood Studios blockbusters, lol.

Further to my previous comment: Following on from your excellent video, I have just done the job on my Fiesta and it went exactly as you explained it. I did deviate slightly: I found it better to insert the small, square nylon type bush on the small ball joint at the rear, once greased up, then just slide it into the square hole on the end of the selector rod so didn't need to use grips. Other then that, I followed your vide step by step! Many thanks! :)

    Thanks for making this video.
I’ve been able to apply this fix to a 5 speed 2015 mark 8 Fiesta with 70k miles. It only presented the issue exiting 2nd gear, normally after a long steep uphill climb. It would be the shift back to neutral that was very stiff, it would easily take all other forward gears in these cases.
I used a pillar drill to bore out the phosphor bronze bush with a 12.2 mm bit. Upon reassembly with high temperature grease, I can confirm the issue is no longer present, even after some hard 2nd gear climbs.
A notable difference on the mk 8 is that you will need to remove the gear selection sensor magnet and unplug the connector. The magnet sits next the rubber boot, removal is with a T30 Torx.

Hi, great video, really informative so thank you. Carrying out this procedure on my son's car has improved gear shifts from almost impossible to just "stiff". Are mk6 fiestas prone to stiff gear changes generally? I can't work out if there is still some kind of issue, or is it now how it should be. A lot stiffer that any other car or van I've had. I drilled out the bush to 12.5.m so wouldn't want to go any bigger.

Would you be able to do a gearbox oil change video for the Mk6 Fiesta please? Most of the IB5 gearboxes don't have a drain plug and the official method is to suck the oil out through the filler hole. There is a nut below the filler nut which can be removed to drain most of the which a lot of people have had success with but its apparently not advised as it can cause issues if it doesn't go back in right. But I'm guessing you know all this. I wouldn't want to remove a drive shaft to drain the oil. Cheers.

Try adjusting the clutch cable (they are cable, right? - if not, bleed the clutch). It does sound like it might be the clutch is near the end of it's life. Also check the 'box fluid level.

Im having the stiffness problem in my brazilean ecosport mk1 with duratec 2.0 engine. It has the same gearbox (IB5 Plus) but doesnt have any bushing in that pivot LOL that part of the hole is just iron without bronze or plastic bushing. The stifness comes when warm maybe 30mins of engine runing.. perhaps its the clutch but the same problem when warm seems to happend in these fiestas with the same gearbox :/

Would you know what is the problem when the gear stick is STIFF side to side in neutral? Cables or gear shifter ? Any easy ways to eliminate the gear cables or shifter? Looked at the cables on both ends and all look pretty good just little rusty down by gearbox end which is expected… thanks in advance!!

My wife just bought a 2006 fiesta some weeks ago. No problems with the test drive. But if the engine is hot the gear shifting is really hard. Tommorow I will try this fix. I will let you know the result.

Thanks, Andrew. I 'think' it's the same gearbox, so probably is. I'm about 80% certain, so you'll have to have a look to confirm (the whole job doesn't even take an hour so won't take long to confirm or not).

Nice video Cyd. I realy love your channel, especialy because i drive Saab 9-3 🙂
I have a question about this video:
Is it posible that is the same problem on Mazda 2 with diesel engine from 2008?

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  Před 3 lety +1

TBH, I don't know for sure. Ford and Mazda had a 'trading relationship' for many years, so I'd say it would be sensible to check if the Mazda is suffering the same fate. It wouldn't take long to check and the whole job can be done in an hour anyway.
Do let us know what you find.

I did this and it didn't solved my issue. Changed oil in gearbox also. Gears go in but they are stiff and left to right is ok. Could there be an issue with cables or below gear knob to put some grease on cables?

I also have a 2006 Ford Fiesta. I did exactly like you, but unfortunately the problem was not solved. That strange noise is still heard when I engage for return. I hope it's not the gearbox, if the noise problem when I try to engage in manual transmission comes from the gearbox, then the car is no longer worth repairing. The repair becomes more expensive than the whole car😢

Just came across your video and I think I found the solution to my weird problem! I drive a fiesta just like that and 80% of the time the gear changing is super easy cause all I drive is 5 miles to work and back! But on long journeys especially when there’s a lot of inclines having to rev the car more than normal! The gear changing becomes a lot stiffer and sometimes needing a little bit of force to get into gear! But there is no gear crunching or grinding sounds! Could this be the solution?

My 2015 fiesta makes grinding noise and it slips when shifting to reverse and i shifting to to all gear is smooth about 80% of time but sometimes changing to gears specially to 1st and 3rd gear is impossible. It feels like something is blocking. What could be the problem. Would appreciate anyone’s help. Thanks
