I used a very similar pattern on an Eclipse I just strung with 12D ECMblack for one of my team's goalies. The pocket came out looking almost exactly the same as that one and I'm really proud of it since it was my first time. He loves it. Kudos to the awesome stringability of your mesh, stringing it up was no problem even with my lack of experience with goalie heads.

great video greg. i agree with most parts, but I feel for the first part couple holes of the sidewall, I interlock but I don't interlock too tight because I still want to have rebound control. So I try and find a perfect middle between too tight and too loose.

excellent theory vid and long overdue. I send mine to goaliestrings but I agree with everything you said. GoalieStrings doesn't recommend the quad sidewall for all heads/pockets. His take is more that every head and the intended pocket dictate a string pattern.

Hey Greg, nice pockets you’ve strung! I used to use hard 12d mesh in my high school days and loved it, never found it difficult to work with and it would break in after a day and last a whole season, I like the new era of mesh but it’s a bit pricey. So I believe you misspoke, 20d gives you less feel of the ball, less control, and less rebound control when compared to 12d. the wider the diamonds are, the more the ball sits into them giving you that feel and control. The advantage to 20d is that it throws better/you can get it out of your stick faster. Also, rebound control is more due to the players hands and arms than the stick itself. I think your 20d pocket is a lot better than the 12d so maybe it felt that way to you. Just figured id give you some feedback out of love for the game and position.
I have strung endless amounts of goalie heads through my high school and college days. Over my high school career, I was constantly making stringing adjustments every day for my own stick. I experimented with all sorts of unconventional methods of stringing and have learned through trial and error what is optimal. Your pockets are pretty darn nice but I keep seeing poorly strung goalie pockets from “professional stringers” all over Instagram which inspired me to come out of retirement and start stringing proper goalie heads again. Thanks for making this vid to discuss this topic. I think most people are approaching stringing a goalie head like it’s a field head, which is sort of a mistake. Usually I see tennis racket pockets, overly channeled pocket, pockets too deep that will throw straight down…etc because they don’t understand what it’s like to use one. I don’t think what you said about pulling and stringing the top of the sidewall tight, bunching the mesh in the middle, then puling the lower portion tight, is the best way to conceptualize it. My beliefs are that you want to leave the mesh a bit less pulled down at the top then basically string 1i the entire way down with one 2i/double up or none with 12d mesh. I’m not sure if I got that nomenclature correct, but I hope you understand. Also I learned that brian Phipps uses old school side wall meaning you run a sidewall string upward skipping all the holes and going thru the top hole, spiraling down from there and that was the difference maker. It allows the pocket to shift more to absorb shots more effectively, places the ball right where it needs to be to throw an outlet, handles the ball better by adjusting more to have the ball sit firmly centered in the sweet spot without any rattle when handling matters outside the crease or going coast to coast. I think all goalies need and deserve a pocket that can do it all. My page is precision pockets on ig if anyone wants to contact me. I will have to do a walkthrough stringing video in the future.
    Thanks again
    -Brian

      Brian,
Thanks for the feedback! I totally agree there are a lot people out there who try but don't always succeed as they are new to the craft. We love to see that more and more players each year are taking a stab at learning the tricks of the trade. I think the entire community would love more content when it comes to goalie pockets if you created some tutorials.

If the idea is to narrow the mesh with multiple sidewall strings, this would add weight to the head, especially on a rainy game.
My suggestion is to run a tight nylon or a leather down each side of the mesh and use crosslace strung like a traditional pocket on each side. This will narrow the mesh and create extra depth with less weight, even if the weight difference is marginal.

Brandon 111 you could do a couple things. You got move the side walls up a hole to move the pocket up, or you could move the bottom string up a row of diamonds to move the pocket up. Id suggest trying the bottom string first.
