  • Short clip of Krishna Soogrim-Ram (of Malick Tassa Drummers) playing Tikhora and Nagarra then Calypso. His tassa playing here isn't flashy, but it is amazingly solid.

Thanks! I'm glad you are enjoying it. I hope to get back sometime soon. It was fun talking with Krishna. I love hearing about your family's history with tassa.

this is the man responsible for creating the plastic skin tassa drum.
his drum here is made of wood but his first try was with an IRON shell not the freon tank but iron like a pot.

I believe he told me that he has traveled to North America and Europe for some performances (I'd have to check my notes to tell you for sure), but he lives in Malick, San Juan, Trinidad. I made this video at his house there. Very nice guy too!

That old dude is just toooo gangsta -- "tell him to stop making style" hahaha. Other than the cymbals guy, the other two played flawless. Props props T-n-T!!!

You got to buy fiberglass sheets or fiberglass rods. Rods are easier to deal with, but it takes time to make a pair of chob, first couple times it might not come out good, eventually you'll get the hang of it. Borrow somebody's old chob and take it apart and see how they did it...

The puerto rican guy playing the brass is not accustomed to it, he normally is a fuller. Malick Tassa Drummers is one of the best in Trinidad and the World.Every note heard clean and clear.

Then he tried the wooden shell and got what he was looking for.
When this drum was first introduced most if not all tassa drummers dismissed it saying it was not a tassa drum and it not sounding good. Most tassa groups use these now. When he attempted to play it at hosay one year he was literally PUSHED out of the gayelle, but before leaving he turned and told them "next year you all will be playing plastic tassa" so said so done. 99.99% of tassa groups use them.

I think it has more to do with his inexperience than his skin color.
