I wore these boots over 12 years on and off. Went overseas, did a 7500 mile motorcycle trip, climbed a 17,000 volcano, did a bunch of hiking and recently wore them almost every day for the past 2 years to work and finally am retiring them because I've worn through the rubber on the bottom. I didn't even remember how the bottom pattern was. Truly great boots. I could probably get them resole and keep them going.

I bought my Danner RAT boots w/Goretex three years ago and right out of the box, they were fantastic. I live in Minnesota and have used them through winters, summers and they are a joy on my feet. Yesterday, I ordered the Danner USMC MEB boots, as a cooler option and different look. I have high hopes for those boots. That will make my third pair of Danner boots.

Got them in 2010 to patrol the fields in Marjah and used them through land navigation in A&S. 12 years later and they still hold very well but maybe I need to get them refurbished.

However, the vibram soles have worn down to slicks, the liner shredded, heel support (plastic) crumbled to pieces, and stitching has unraveled in some places...all within the past year. Im about to put them on my feet right now. Its about 10 degrees out with a inch of light powder ( and no im not talking about Hunters bugger suger) whereas my feet will be chilly they still get the job done
ive been wearing the boot pretty much every day for about 4 months now. That wear includes , tree work, construction, casual wear & over 800 miles riding a bicycle.
It's a great boot my favorite part is the EGA thats embossed on the heel as i am a 03 vet.
There have been a few issues though.
1 of the metal grommets pulled in ( the highest one on the outside of the left boot)

The heel shank is a rigid layering in thin black plastic with a sticky spongy mat... when interior textile worn out they went broken.
You cannot clean properly leather parts so stains rest (so you get sort of multicam effect, if you please...).
Over time you also discover that this boots are a patchwork of different bucks cuts because discoloring is different in different stitched parts... polyurethane cover on heel and toe once abraded can't return tip top.
At first this are really excellent boots, really you will sleep with 'em on, more comfortable and light than a pair of very very good gym shoes, over time, in 5 years of light civilian urban usage they are still usable and comfy (both rear shanks broken, insole fabric gone) but not presentable anymore.
I have the RAT and Hoodwinter light and a pair of Corcoran Marauder black to compare, today, after 5~7 years of not everyday usage I think Danner is tons of marketing and overpriced products, they are still comfortable boots but not as finest and durable as they claim, they are good products sold as top. This my two cents.

I got issued a pair of the Wellco Rat boots before a deployment in 2011 and wore them to death. There was a love hate relationship as the counters were very painful when they cracked and made my feet like ground beef. The counters (Heel caps) broke through the liners but when I ripped them out so the boots felt like a sock. My rat boots came back a mess held together with tent glue in multiple locations, and I duck-taped 2 dildos to the side for added ankle support, but they served me well overall.
I was wondering if anyone has had issues with the counters (heel caps) on the Danners. I would suspect the Danners would be built better, and I am kind of interested in taking a pair of rats for another ride.

The newer version of these are Danner's Marine Expeditionary Boots (MEB). They weigh about 4.1 lbs vs the RAT 4.4 lbs. I wouldn't worry so much about light weight boots for him yet, he's gonna be hiking around with 90lbs of equipment on his back and he will be better off with a sturdy boot that gives great foot support. Leave the light weight boots for when he gets into the fleet. He will want light boots for CFTs.
Also a bit of advice for him. Buy the good socks. Spend the money and get the really expensive socks that advertise how they can be worn for 7 days etc etc. Those will last him years and years, where as the cheapo bulk socks will get ruined in a few months and don't have near the cushion or comfort. I got out of the USMC in 2015 and I still use some of those nicer socks because they just never wear out.

These boots are now around 180 to 220 dollars. Worth every penny. When they were 300 they are worth every penny. Most comfortable combat boots I've ever worn right out of the box. I have a pair of Danner Acadias and a pair of Danner Marine GTX. I love all 3 pairs. I've had so many brands of boots over the last 20 plus years in law enforcement. Danner are by far the best. 100% waterproof with all 3 pairs. The Acadias are the only pair that needed a month to break in. After that month, they feel like sneakers. I've worn my Danners in all types of weather. They exceed any expectation I have. My Acadias are 4 years old and don't even have a stitch loose. You pay more but your feet are worth it. I'll never buy another brand now that I've owned Danners. All the other brands I've bought or been issued have all fallen apart. When I wear my Danners out I'm going to send them back to Danner and get them rebuilt. I love that I can do that. It's like having the best pair of boots for life.

To each their own. I hate Under Armour shoes/boots. I'll never own another pair. All have fallen apart in less than a year. I've put my Danners through hell and they've lasted years. • @benjaminpeterson1797
      @benjaminpeterson1797 Před 4 lety +1

The protective "plastic" areas are waterproof from general splashes and morning dew. this helps with not getting a wet foot from just a splash. no military boots are 100% waterproof and you dont want them to be either since a foot sweats. the holes allow for water/sweat to drain and get aired out. its a hot weather boot so it they arent made for cold wet winters.
