Great job again just started watching your videos it's great to see the struggle of a jobing builder I have been one for 30 years. Make me laugh when brickies talk about walling 1000 bricks a day on site. I am happy to get 300 done most days lol. What's gone on with the house coursing for that 50mm bit of brick.

A do like getting these types of jobs now and then something different most 1,s tend to get is roughcast so have patch dry dash back in. Always blown rebar in concrete lintel put rebar in everything in yet last 35-40 tops 😬 keeps us busy tho 😆😎👍🏻

Amazing work as always Steve. Need this exact job done above my main window. I got a builder around recently and he messed it up badly. Water is coming in as he didn't add weep holes. 🙄 Also, his cement mix is very sandy, not strong at all. Does the back of the weep hole need to touch the DPC? Many thanks.
Sounds stressful Gary , you need a tiny gap just so the weep vent isn’t sealed so water can escape 🧱👍🏼

Say a couple of lintels have been fitted during a extension but the exterior wall is covered in pebble dash, if the lintels start to rust how would we know? Would the pebble dash crack?

If an angle iron has been sanded and painted carefully before its installed, will it still rust and turn out like the one you had just taken out ?
It will last longer but not as long as a galvanised one 🧱👍🏼
Frog down always annoys me as well and it means that the building itself doesn't have proper structural integrity. Well done for pointing it out Steve, pardon the pun.

As for the mix it all depends on the weather . If it goes off you can know knock it up a couple of times 🧱👍🏽

Have you heard of Proppas they fit on the end of across and extend the lip of the acrow by about 200mm , we use them in Australia for this sort of work

Yes but I did it so many times it just makes things awkward and difficult to sort the tray out . The way I look at it it probably an extra 10 bricks so it works our quicker as your not struggling in a small gap . 🧱👍🏽

How does the ox trowels compare to marshalltown if you’ve used marshalltown ones before I just ordered a 11 inch ox phili. Pattern I’ve been using a marshalltown one since I’ve started. I noticed you had ox is why I ask.
To be honest we were sent the trowels by ox but we did buy them before that . I find them very similar but
Ox is way cheaper to buy .
There is a massive issue with the ox though that I flagged up to them but they chose to ignore . The bung on the end of the handle comes loose and falls off if your not careful and when it’s gone it’s ruined 😢. I would say take it out and stick it back with super glue or araldite 💪🏽🧱👍🏼.

Thanks Phil . Poor bricks and mortar plus frog down brickwork allows water to penetrate which then starts rust on the lintel . As the rust spreads it expands and it’s so destructive it will lift the back of the house up 😬🧱👍🏼

Is the no tapping over the lintel to stop it tilting back ?
Tapping vibrates the whole lintel and can cause the bricks to sink . This is because the bed goes off slower being on dpc and steel 🧱👍🏽

This is how things where done in the 60/70s concrete splayed lintel on the inner and 4 x3.steel angle iron on the outer
These were timber on the internal leaf 🧱👍🏽

hi mate I've just finished my Apprentiship and I am now on an improver wage, typically how long until my money goes up or I am no longer classed as an improver soon will be three years since I've started.
I was lucky back in the eighties as I was building houses for a small builder so I went straight onto price work .
It’s hard to say plus I have only had 1 apprentice , my son Alex . Not sure if there are any official guidelines.
Give Charlie collision a watch he is very clued up about this sort of thing having employed a lot of improvers .

Suggestion is put some pea gravel behind the first two courses behind the weepholes to let water get through.
😱😱. No that means no insulation so a cold bridge and risk of damp 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild The idea is to create a cavity clear for water to get through. Using batt insulation flopping around does nothing. You could use strips of rigid. Also since lintel is not attached to inside wall you have a cold bridge right there. The idea of pea gravel over the weepers is to keep mud form falling behind and plugging the weepholes. This is not one mans opinion! Pea gravel is code many places and standard in most new masonry building around the world where there is high moisture or rain. If you install weeping tile around a house or building you put gravel on it so the dirt does not plug the tile. Same idea but on a smaller scale.

@@SteveAndAlexBuild I am 44 years a bricky as well. Years ago we never did the gravel either. However bricklaying in North America is a licensed trade as well as many other countries. The evolution of cavity walls and brick ties have have been going on for decades to adapt to different climates. Some UK bricky's we get know about different types of vapor barriers to be used inside cavity walls with flashings under brick as well as over lintels some don't. Brick alone does not stop moisture from entering cavity wall and leaching through 4' block into living space . A trowel on vapor barrier or peel and stick would also help cold leaching from brick along ties into the 4 'block. Because of the increased demand in the world to create energy efficient walls and stop heat loss masonry is coming under fire to be better. Though UK might not be doing it your channel broad casts through You Tube to countries that do follow this practice. It would be a good idea to mention construction practice is UK only.

I have a new customer has had a window replaced and the brickwork is not great to be honest but probably not been done properly. they have water coming in above the window , like pouring in when it rains. The pointing while not brilliant does not look bad enough to me to explain the amount of water coming in. Also from looking up at the roof , can't see any tiles out. Hence how I came about your video. I can see how if water came down the cavity from the roof maybe the cause. I'm not a bricklayer and know my limitations . I don't want to be just pointing up the wall if it is something more structural like what you have here. I would say the wall/window in question is same setup as the one in the video. Cheers for the reply, I don't mean to be picking your brain I was just genuinely curious as to how the water physically gets into the cavity . Have a look at the top 2 corners of the window , if the beds are cracked and larger than normal then the lintel has rusted and blown which always lets water in . This is a new lintel job , check the silicone , if it’s that then it’s an easy fix . It does sound like wherever it’s getting in the cavity tray could have failed . Good luck 👍🏼🧱

I've done a lot of these over the last few years. Good old London bricks, nasty bricks to use. You can still get 225mm commons to save having to put stubby piece in but if the client is happy then jobs a good'un. Great work 👍

Considering that bungalows probably 50 year old or more , being frog down there was no damage really. The worst offender is when theres a severe frost after a good downpour when bricks spawl ,that happens even on class B's though.

Frog down is bad but it looks to that this is the consequence of a badly fitted cavity tray with no weep holes. I'd have bedded that lintel on but it's barely doing anything, I reckon you'll be alright! Loving the bricklaying zone you CZcams

Not being over critical but if you open the nine perps up 5mm each then it would do away with the nasty little 35mm piece shouldn't be nothing smaller than half brick in stretcher bond. Whoever built the house messed the bond up. End job looks good though. Happy new year.👍

Steve I saw rodians video . Very sad news to hear . I asked him to set up a paypal account so that anybody that wants to can stick a few bob in it to help them out . If he doesn’t do it , would you be able to get on to him and encourage him to do it . serious illness can have a severe impact on a family’s income while at the same time adding to there expenses . He mentioned in the video that hollies income is gone so the impact of the monetary side of things is biting hard already .

Not very good I've done loads of these in my career let me give you a few tips bed Lintol at either end, cut your new cavity tray the right size measure the with of Lintol about 75 mm crease the Dpc so it sits in the corner of your new Lintol use strong boys on your acro
You can get Lintol out put the last course in as you go and go to town on filling the last joint use a. Pointing trowel point in the top brick then you can put some stuff in at the back of the brick and keep cavity clear ....

Why does the building industry not use stainless steel for lintels and such? Mild steel is bound to rust no matter how well it is protected. Once corrosion starts , oxide jacking will eventually occur and destroy any masonry or joints around it. The price differential between plain and mild steel these days is negligible when compared to the cost of ongoing repairs or maintenance.

I have finally found a great lad called James who has a cracking scaffold firm who can be relied on for a reasonable price too .
Florida just keeps me going as that’s the ultimate goal .
We will just keep plodding away and keep filming.
We are currently working at my daughters removing the spaghetti fence , moving it 10 foot and putting a proper fence up .
No bricklayers here , still too cold 🥶.

@@martin2466 My house has survived 350 years I cannot abide houses built with sharp corners and billiard table flat surfaces. Laser precision is good for rapid, fitting of standardised sheet materials etc. but very bad for aesthetics. I find modern build house dull, soulless and depressing. "They're all made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same", as the old song goes.
Not criticising but wasnt the tray cut too short on the left side? looks like it so there was barely any upstand also it's a crime not to bed a Intel on. I hate watching CZcams videos of bricklaying because I spot so much. Atb for 2021

Dpc should be pulled tight wheres the weep holes water going to brige

Your should always slate pack last course will never achieve a solid joint with a tuck pointer
Yes you can and through past experience when you pack with slate it just pushes down onto the angle iron and bends it .

@@Foyster62 There is barely any weight above the lintel . Brickwork is self supporting to an extent . If you took the lintel out there would only be a triangle comes down eventually.
As for the lintels we are all in shit street then as they have been around since the early eighties .
The lintel I took out was about 10 mm thick and that didn’t turn out well did it ?
Why put that farting little piece of brick in on the row, did it have it there in the first place, I think not. You should have made the joints a tad bigger better than having a bit chucked in. I would have made you do it again.

. At least half the bricks were new ones which are smaller than the originals and the 1st course over the lintel was almost all new to avoid chips being seen from below . It actually worked I’m my favour to get the upstand on the tray . 🧱👍🏽
What type of mix do you use to do the pointing mate and do you add any lime or not?
