    You missed something. The battery is so old, it is uselessly dead. The battery is deceased. You need to replace it.

    Those batteries are NiCad (Nickel Cadmium,) they require you to charge them on the wall to 100 % then discharge them to 0% BEFORE using renewable charging or else you destroy the cells and it won't hold a charge.

    Any motor can generate electricity, the E-motor was just designed to do so more efficiently than other LEGO motors. Unfortunately it's actually pretty crap as a motor, doesn't have good torque or speed or size, so it's a good thing it's better than any other motor at being a generator, it's otherwise pointless to use.

    I actually have this set, i thought that i got ripped off because i couldnt figure out how to use it and i thought you had to have a NXT Brick. Btw it might be a little hard to charge.

    It is possible the battery inside the Energy Storage unit is dead, it is 14 years old after all.
