For a lore that's focused on the balance and the simmetry of good and evil, Diablo seems to only explore the concept of "tuning bad" but never the concept of "tuning good". If angels can fall and become corrupted, why isn't it also possible for demons to do the reverse and become more righteous? It would be interesting to see a Prime or Lesser Evil "purify" and fight for good.

    • @EximiusNero
      @EximiusNero Před 3 lety +42

That's a good point. I thought it would make sense if one or more of the demons that were tired of the Eternal Conflict & followed Inarius & Lilith to Sanctuary originally, became defenders of their nephalem offspring. Basically doing what Lilith only pretended to be doing. Of course Lilith killed off all the rogue demons & angels so none are still around, but it would be cool if a few survived, & had been watching over mankind.

Throughout Diablo especially Diablo 1 in Tristram we see motifs of what true good is. Often the angels are sort of these external forces that barely intervene and are more like this guild than anything. Your best friends in Tristram who end up being most pivotal are a senile old man, a drunk, and a few crazy ass villagers. It’s sort of a story of good triumphing over evil in unexpected ways IMO.

    • @EximiusNero

@@MarkJohansen123 Yea, I think the duality in Diablo is actually 'Order vs Chaos' & not 'Good vs Evil'. The Angels aren't 'Good' as we think of the term, Inarius, Imperius & eventually even Malthael wanted to destroy mankind. The Angels just want to uphold an Ordered cosmos & oppose the Chaotic corruption of Demons.
Humans are largely left on their own to survive & develop their own duality, a conception of what is Good & what is Evil. Good seems to be whatever benefits mankind's survival, & develops virtues such as Honor, Compassion, Justice, etc, leading to healthy communities & a sense of Brotherhood. Evil is whatever corrupts mankind, tempting our baser instincts towards destruction, greed, hatred, etc.
Tyrael as the aspect of Justice, is the only Angel that directly helps mankind, the only one that seems Good to our human perspective. As humans we are both Angel & Demon, we are made of both Order & Chaos, & our heroes recognize both are needed to preserve the most Good.

This is the ultimate problem with Diablo and complex stories.
The player is always supposed to win.
When your players are supposed to win, every lore figure becomes a punching bag.
In my opinion, it would be far more interesting to see Imperius defy the odds. Ultimately reforming himself.
Now could this involve Imperius falling down the demonic path? Absolutely. But what makes a story like this great is if Imperius is able to actually come back from the corruption (with some help from the player, of course.)
Falling deep down the well of anger and despair, only to come back stronger is a fantastic story avenue.

Having yet another angel turn evil and then Imperius be defeated, again, is just.. lazy, to me.

I want to see Imperius fall and be redeemed. That he makes a mess of things, which may be why Lilith is needed. The Nephilim can't be everywhere even with the great power at their call. So some may feel a need for other protectors. This only infuriates Imperius more, making the conflict even bloodier. But as he sinks ever further into the embrace of wrath he finally sees some of what his brother sees in them. A glimmer of good. Not a lot...especially not in the face of all the injustice he sees. But it gives him pause. A mental weakness. One that is capitalized to turn him from his path of wrath and to maybe help save the day. He can't go back to how he was and he still can't forgive the humans...but maybe he can be a bit more even handed with them. Maybe...he realizes without justice valor means nothing.

Imperius is definitely a very dark character and the death of Malthael at the hand of the Nephalem, a being stronger than angels and demons, a being that wouldn't even be alive if the council voted on destroying them might have been the last straw. He took over heaven killing his brethren that did not want this to happen and now rules over heaven only to strike sometime in the main storyline of Diablo IV with our character fighting and killing the now Aspect of Wrath.
    I could see this happen.

  • @TNeums12
    @TNeums12 Před 4 lety +14

I would think the natural conclusion to pure wrath would be exhaustion. Since there is this time jump I'm assuming. Imperius would be come broken but still unforgiving of humanity. With the death of Maltheal and the aging of Tyreal's mortal form leading to his probable death Imperius would force the gates of heaven shut. He goes to pandemonium like ages past and is beaten and broken in combats with no purpose against the burning hells. His armor dented and wrecked he just wallows in the pandemonium fortress. Auriel and aetherial unable to coax him back.
Maybe the player needs information on Lillith only Imperius knows and goes to the pandemonium fortress to find him. They see him broken against a wall recouping from a recent battle. He then says how hope and fate cannot bring him back. Valor and Justice have failed him as well. The character then offers mortal wisdom which at first angers Imperius for he confronts his wrongs but cannot handle them and it looks like the boss fight finally happens but he just collapses and is brought back to heaven finally.
I like this story thread cause I've never seen Imperius as a villain. He was wrathful and filled with pride but anyone would be when your enemy is as debased and cruel as the hells. He obeyed the will of the council even when they went against him. He never just wanted to outright kill Tyrael despite Tyreal's great mistakes. (Of which there are many) I feel a redemption arc for Imperius would be more appropriate in this story and would be a nice twist from his original conception.

Reading the Sin War trilogy is opening my eyes to the truth of the Diablo universe, that is also echoed by Trag'Oul: Heaven =/= Good. The eternal conflict is light vs. dark, neither is good for humanity. Also, I'm very skeptical of the notion I keep hearing that Lilith will be our "Savior" I feel like to make her such would be an absolute retcon: Her one and only motivation is revenge (and dominance of everything, humans included, as a result). She murdered countless innocent nephalem during the sin war in addition to sleeping with her great-great-great-great grandson. to manipulate him for what she wants (control over the nephalem and destruction of hell & heaven). I really want that theme to be pursued during diablo 4 if they're going to make Heaven an enemy. I want us, the Nephalem standing on our own two feet, fighting for ourselves and the balance that perserves us and our freedom. This kind of happened during D3 already: We fought the Prime Evil, then a rogue angel that was once the head of the Angiris council

It has ZERO in actual connection with HONOR ( I mean he immediately joined battle when realizing Diablo was in the Silver City - no lack of courage THERE. Though so much fiction has been showing us brilliantly over the last 50 years that neither VALOR nor HONOR are inherently "good", or beneficial. They are often part and parcel in an individual with "GOODNESS", but they often stand completely apart: Valor = Bravery, Honor = Keeping your word/principles. Come to think about it, the once great angiris council now missing 2 members out of 5. Tyreal abandoned his title of aspect of justice, and he isn't really capable of being the aspect of wisdom - his mortal body cannot fulfill the task of an archangel. If you ask me, Imperius doesn't need to do any dirty tricks, he can just naturally take control of the heaven. If there's conflict it will not be Imperius trying to overthrow others but rather others trying to overthrow him. And it is actually a reasonable act that the heaven trying to shut down their gate to other realms. Because they indeed need sometime to recover from the past events, both physically(replenish their numbers, recall key figures of the council) and mentally(think back about what they did and what turns out from their deeds). It would be rather silly if Imperius just make a kamikaze charge with his damaged army, and probably further damage it by purging them with his rule. That is just not smart, and is not a good story at all. Imperius is not a smart person about logic and emotions, but even a warmonger should at least know war better than anyone else. He's the aspect of valor not a hot headed 15 years old brat. So I say the isolation of heaven is not a fruit of someone's trick, but rather a natural move that everybody should agree to do. We'll have to wait and see what comes after that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Imperius would become the boss of a post-launch DLC where he'd assault sanctuary to end what he'd consider a threat to heaven while it's still recovering from whatever mess Lillith and co will create. Where Tyrael was worried the Nephalem would turn on heaven but would only act if it became true, the brash Imperius would pretty much ensure it. Kind of like a self-fulfilling/self-inflicted prophecy

I always thought Imperius would be the second member of the Angiris Council to go astray, after Malthael (despite what the prophecy in Diablo III says, which seemed to indicate that something would happen to Ithariel). But without necessarily falling into the excesses of the latter. An interesting development could be that Imperius discovers the angelic side of the Nephalem and reconsiders (somewhat) his opinion of them. It seemed to go a bit (really a tiny bit) that way in Reapers of Soul. It's also possible that Lilith goes after the Angiris council, I could see her giving Ithariel a hard time (this angel sees the fate of everything, he probably knows where Inarius is) and fighting with Imperius. After all, the underworld is normally in pretty bad shape after Diablo 3's actions (the 7 demons will take a while to reform). The Heavens aren't in a much better state but they still have some leaders and guidance. So maybe Lilith will see them as the priority threat, initially ? Time will tell ^^.

At the end of act 2 imperius kills the nephalem and you go to take revenge in act 3. Possibly near the end of the fight imperius starts to realize what he has done (only if u use tyrael’s sword during his fight) and you have a chose to kill imperius or keep him alive as a future companion to atone for what he had done. Just a thought.

Based upon the ending of Reaper of Souls, I don't think it makes much sense that Imperius would suddenly turn to evil and become an antagonist. While I would certainly enjoy having my character face off against him, I wouldn't want to be because he'd been corrupted. He didn't acknowledge being tricked by Diablo, but even with all his arrogance and pride, it would be a hard act to swallow that Imperius is unable to learn from past mistakes. If so, are all angels really that stupid? We already saw that, although begrudgingly, he understood enough that the Nephilim's help would be required in defeating Malthael.

Imperius should free Inarius when the Nephalem is captured but the minute all is well, kills Inarius and kidnaps Lilith and begins torturing her into finding out how to destroy the Nephalem.
The Nephalem fights Imperius and his armour is destroyed revealing a shard of the black soul stone was implanted into him when Diablo stabbed him in D3.
He’s becoming a rather mutated form of himself who can attack with both demon and angel powers.
A cutscene at 50% health kicks in where he sees himself in a pool of his own angelic blood, looking back on all the past wrongs he has done and offers himself as sacrifice to the Nephalem to rid him of his slow possession.
His last moments are giving advice to the Nephalem to hold on and cherish all the best moments of their life and use them when the darkness weighs heaviest.
He dies having his spear thrust into his chest. You get a cool weapon or piece of armour and that leads you to your showdown with Lilith who has been possessed by the 3 prime evils.

Also at no point have angels been “nerfed”, only overshadowed by the combined force of the prime evil from d3 or nephalem in general (which overpowered both sides). I'd really like some movement between the main characters (who are not only the heroes but also the great evils, council, Lilith and Inarius) maybe there could be an Inarius escaping, more fights between great evils and archangels, Imperius crushing a Lesser evil by wrath, maybe some angels or demons ascending into a great good/evil etc... I'm all for Imperius falling into wrath but not as a demon. I want him to be a dark angel somewhat like Malthael. It doesn't make much sense for archangel to become demon, since they are supposed to be the counterpart of the primes evils. But as a sort of dark light / shadow archangel they keep that position of opposition to Hell but also lose the light of Heaven. That what i liked about Malthael, he wasn't a demon but he was definitely not good or part of Heaven anymore.
That's the way Imperius or maybe even heaven must go. A fourth faction (Hell, Sanctuary/Lilith, Light/Heaven and Imperius/Dark angels). There is a fracture inside Heaven, those like Tyrael that want the light of Heaven to be for all. And those like Imperius that want the light only for angels. As of how things are at the moment, Heaven does not represent what is good in the world. They ignore the pleas from humans and close themselves to them where Hell take them gladly. This must change, but Imperius have a bottomless wrath towards Hell and will never accept mortals, who were born from the union of Demons and Angels, he won't accept such change but cannot become a Demon either as it doesn't make sense. He' still following the light just not as a shining agent but more as a burning one.
Light can be salvation, kindness, and hope but can also be purifying, blinding, burning. Tyrael is of the first, Imperius is of the second. It' still light but not one fit for representing the good of the world and opposing force to Hell that is supposed to be Heaven.

Because we know blood shards play an important role in Diablo 4 (they are pieces of the world stone) and if the World Stone can de-power all Nephalim and change entire worlds, imagine what combining a lot of shards can do to one Nephalim. What was the Nephalim collecting for Kadala? Blood shards.
Angles knew how to use the world stone, Imperious may have learned how to use enough blood shards to weaken the most powerful Nephalim. The guy trailer says no one is left, imply IMO the Nephalim is gone.
I suppose other beings like Lilith or Inarius could be responsible as well, they knew how to use the World Stone.
