It’s amazing how ruthless Bob was the end of the season after winning the European cup and the league cup for the first time, but finishing six was not good enough for Bob and he systematically broke the team up the following year
Came 5th but yeah. Injuries hampered that season so you wonder were some of the bad performances down to that or just players getting older/losing hunger. The West Ham final at Wembley was an atrocious performance. A departing Heighway and a struggling Kenny up front. Ray Kennedy was awful and so was Souness. It's quite surreal to watch. I thought the team were very good in the replay. The Swansea 2-2 in September 1981 was a very laboured performance. Obviously more footage we see today than back then. Bob was obviously conscious of Shanks possibly holding onto his 1960s team for too long. I wonder did Bob not agree with this but being the loyal club man did not rock the boat too much under Shanks. Bob changing half the team in 1981/82 and winning the league was genius. The 1982/83 team is one of my favourites and often overlooked.
At least Liverpool had a better experience on this ground a few months later, beating another team in claret & blue (West Ham) to win their first League Cup.
@@kingseanp9267Phil Neal playing at centre-half - obviously Money and Irwin weren’t trusted to play together as a central defensive pairing. Both were moved on at the end of the season, though they did have some success against Liverpool for their respective clubs in the next couple of seasons.
I can name that eleven for villa now. We only used 14 players that season
To be fair that was a very good Villa team. They went on to win the European cup the following year and in my opinion were broken up too early.
Proper Saturday afternoon 👍

Painful memory, I was at this match...the back 4 were woeful on the day
It’s obvious Money and Irwin were too lightweight, just got absolutely run through.
@@kingseanp9267 Villa and Ipswich were better sides than us that season ..Mortimer went through the middle of us like we weren't there
