Well the criteria he mentioned is not completely true. Mostly all major companies will say degree or equivalent experience. They will never specifically ask for B.Tech or BCA, the JD will say just bachelors or master preferred but that’s not a selection criteria. When I joined Microsoft, they never asked for my degree certificate. I shared it only for the verification as it was mentioned in my resume. Neither My job nor company demanded it.

Big companies requires indepth knowledge of computer science subjects.
Application developers don't require such in depth knowledge. Anyone can learn to create applications by reading documentations and other well written blogs(take time though) So, they will be hired by almost all companies without considering their degrees.
But real engineering happens during the problem solving. It requires computer science principles to optimise the code and create new datastructures and algorithms or to modify existing algorithms to solve some challenges facing in production. So you wont see many people working in core areas without knowning CS principles. Even if someone is working in that department without CS/IT degree, he/she might have learned CS principles very well like a bright CS/IT student.
