- I wanted to quickly do a video to show you how to add sleeves on a shirred dress. Its easy to do and only requires about 1/2 yd extra fabric. I’ll be doing another video later with more indepth tips and how tos with shirred fabric. This video works with pre-shirred fabric. #diy #shirreddress

I have been looking for a video that does just this. At my age I just don't feel comfortable with bare arms! I wanted to buy this fabric at Joann but the strapless look turned me off. I knew some brilliant seamstress would have a solution. Thank you.
A tip to make the sleeves come in a bit more if you done want such a wide neck is to use 5.5 inches for the square cut out instead of 4

Carrie! I just got a bunch of this fabric for cheap because there was a normal sale and a remnant discount stacked on top of it. I can’t believe the first (and most helpful) video about adding sleeves to this exact fabric is by you, I’ve been watching Charlie for months and just haven’t gotten around to looking up your channel yet. I’m hoping the fabric I cut off from the hem will be enough to make some short sleeves, I’m 5’1 so I just assumed there will be enough

I feel inspired! Somehow I have a purple dress with an embroidered fleur de lis, and I'd rather not wear that so I want to alter this. Maybe I will add an applicae and sleeves!😊
Thank you for the great ideas I thought about leaving the sleeve open across the top of my arm, so finishing the edges so it’s sort of flouncy. I’ll try it if it doesn’t work, I’ll figure out something else!

So frustrated. I have a singer 2277. I have tried all of your tips tricks videos. I’ve changed stitch length to 3-4, tension from 5 all way up to 9. Stretching flat as I sew , tightened and loosen bobbin casing, light weight fabric and still it is not working fabric shir is loose and or top thread popping ? Do you have any suggestions or does some machines just not shir?
@@Cambrilsbirds I have always assumed that it would work on any home sewing machine that had a top thread and bobbin, but my sister had a difficult time shirring with her singer machine. I need to do some in-depth research on this.
I got home and realized the pre smocked fabric I got is very see through. Any advice for adding a liner? I don’t want to wear a slip
Hmmmm that can be tricky. You could try to sew a lining fabric right below the last row of shirring. You would have to stretch the shirred fabric out completely as you sew, so when you are done, the lining will gather up with the dress.
If it helps, I've lined these before by using a thin jersey/lycra type material that stretches as well as the shirred fabric does. I've made a "boob tube" style bodice and attached a skirt to it (kind of creating a "stretchy slip"), then attached that to the shirred dress like you would a normal lining, stitching them together at the top and bottom of the bodice, so that it doesn't slip - and the bottom of the dress, too, if you're feeling fancy (although you don't have to do the bottom of the dress for it to hold). Dependent on how you choose to do this and what fabric you use, it may show, so attaching the liner to a slightly lower part of the outer dress will stop it rolling, and give you the fabric to fold the dress fabric over the liner, and stitch it down, which will help you get a smarter finish.
If you put shirred fabric underneath or try shirring a liner to the original, it will show unless you are *incredibly* precise. Jersey is the easier option as it gives you the coverage without showing through.

Please the 4 inches you cut from each side of the armfit... Yusaid is a standard measurment that fits everyone but what about children? A girl of 10?

Did you have any issues with the shirring coming undone after cutting it?
I bought some to make a dress and even after serging after cutting the pieces, the shirring is coming out in several places.
No, I haven’t had any issues. Let me play around with a piece and see if I can come up with a solution.
