    I do the same thing near the beach in Florida (home made). But here with the high temperatures, I only use the lattas for the walls so that winds can pass though freely. Then a roof to protect me from rain of course.
    I only use it as a bedroom and have a separate kitchen and a separate bathroom. All totally off the grid.
    The first cold front is actually coming in tonight so I will be closing in the wall and setting up the heater stove soon. It only gets down to about 35° here.

    This yurt is nicely set up for a small one (16 ft across). Many Oregon State Parks rent yurts. They're very popular, so book ahead. We stayed in one and were convinced that building/buying our own was a great idea. Yurts are really affordable, lightweight compared w/other building materials, and stand up well to wind, rainy climates and even earthquakes. Ours was fine in a 7.7 earthquake... really! Sound can be a problem, but living rent/mortgage free more than makes up for it.

    I'm in Bellingham, and I've wanted to stay for a night in a yurt ever since I learned about them.
    Unfortunately, I've had 4 strokes, starting in June 2011. I have a mobility-related disability, and my Pride Victory 10 mobility scooter therefore is pretty important to me. I doubt that the decks on which the yurts at Thousand Trails are built have ramps for such scooters, so I'd probably have to bring my own.
    Then again, I'd need a vehicle capable of carrying the scooter in the first place. I doubt that the Mount Vernon campground is even in the normal travel range of the Skagit County paratransit service. But one never knows.

    • @KeeperofTheMountain
      @KeeperofTheMountain  Před 9 lety +2

I am also challenged physically and receive the checks I earned. my medical is both Medicare and Medicaid. with the help of 3 qualified physicians and proper paperwork I have been able to get a few very helpful tools for maintaining assistance with my care. they are referred to as being durable medical equipment. I have been informed that when the time comes for the remaining use of my legs that I may be eligible for both a scootabout and a vehicle to help me and the scootabout get around. please check this information with your pain management doctor and God's speed.

    • @markpettigrew3482
      @markpettigrew3482 Před 8 lety +1

      apacheredwolfe Actually, I don't have a "pain management doctor".
      I did experience some pain the other day, and my stroke-related disability seemed to be to blame, but I've been fairly fortunate, pain-wise.
      When I broke my tibia (main leg bone) at age 11, the pain was excruciating!
      The main difference is that I was able to look forward to getting better, as long as I walked with crutches until the doctor removed my itchy plaster cast. This is different. I think that it's unlikely that I'll ever get better, barring a miracle.

    Yurts are great.
    More campgrounds o resorts than Thousand Trails, have them.
    This is totally an ad promoting Thousand Trails...a membership {read: expensive!!!] vacation campground or resort.
    If you think you might like to own a yurt, PLEASE do LOTS of homework before buying one, make sure the county where your site is, allows them--or allows living in them--or what strange arrangements they stipulate for them,
    Rainier Yurts is one that has option for double-layer insulation [R-10]; Alaska yurts has thick insulation [more R-value] and waterproof covers.
    In cold wet climates, those are very good to have.
    Insulated units at Yosemite Lakes [CA] required more blankets for sleepers who stayed there in winter, as the propane heat stove was inadequate to warm their large, skimpily-insulated yurts.
    Insulation also keeps these cooler in summer.

      You selling camp or resort memberships?
      Or....?
      Can't read for content?
      Don't like Thousand Trails having competition?
      Plenty positive in my comment.
      Get a yurt without doing homework on how to best use them---then good luck with your dream-scape when a hard winter happens, Grasshopper.
      They're fun to stay in for vacation;
      CAN be fun to live in...just need to know how-to, better than yurt-sellers normally inform their customers.
      It's real world, not aerie-fairy dreaming.
      Bring extra blankets when camping in them at campgrounds/resorts, in winter.

      Keeperof Themountain,
      Yurts appear to be very romantic to stay in; creative ambiance and all--which are wonderful!
      We found our winter stay in an insulated, Pacific Yurt, very enjoyable up near Yosemite.
      It had most of the windows covered by the roll-down covers for added insulative value [a bit].
      It had a thermostat-controlled gas heater, but it was not adequate to keep the interior warm enough for deep-winter stays. We really wished we'd brought more blankets for sleeping comfort, that weekend!
      After MUCH research, we ended up buying a Nesting Bird unit [now owned by Rainier Yurts, in Seattle, WA], with double insulation
      --Pacific Yurts didn't make double insulation--they said they didn't think it made enough difference---we can say for a fact, that yes, double insulation DOES make a difference!
      We also wished we'd ordered the skylite topper from the place in Alaska--it's more durable, faceted unit, and can have a chimney pipe up through one of the panes of glass--a far better skylight than the dramatic smooth dome skylights so often used [they don't live very long in some circumstances--long stories...]
      Over years, we've learned the hard way, that most venders of them don't adequately educate potential buyers about living in them---there definitely IS a learning curve!
      High-tech is a great thing, but sometimes, there might be better materials to use in some climates, for instance.
      Yurts require user-interface to keep them running well--they are not a passive house to stay in. They require maintenance. IF you think that at any time, you might be physically limited in ability to care for it or move it, you might consider getting multiple small units, instead of the gorgeous large unit.
      It'd require writing a book to convey everything.
      Did you have specific questions?

      Winter Star Not particularly. I think the world of Yurts could stand to have a video of your yurt with the information you just wrote. Are you in Washington State? If so I would like to film it.

    I've never heard of a yurt before now. And now I know. Thanks for posting. How much did this yurt set you back per night?

      I think it was about $120.00 a night. I don't really remember the price though.
