    Although this mostly happened 70 years ago, any aspiring journalists should make a study of this man. His reporting always upheld the highest principles of this honourable profession. Unfortunately, these principles are so often ignored, especially in this day and age of dangerous baseless conspiracies that are swamping the so called 'mass media'. 'Good Night, and Good Luck'

      I had to study Murrow in my comm class in college. It was an incredibly interesting topic to focus in on, yet it was still so relevant today.

    Do you have any radio airchecks that runs for hours non stop ? Like music stations ?

    • @oldisbest470
      @oldisbest470  Před 3 lety +5

      There are definitely some lengthy airchecks available for download on the Internet Archive, most of them beginning in the later 1960s, but some a little earlier, most of them being things like Top 40 radio programs. Unfortunately, I can't upload them to CZcams because all the songs will probably be picked up by the copyright filter and the video will almost certainly get blocked. But there's a whole collection of old airchecks on the Internet Archive. Here's the link for that: archive.org/details/airchecks

    Back when the media told the news

    • @datatwo7405

      That all ended in the 80s. Ronald Reagan did not renew the Fairness Doctrine that required and regulated the news outlets to cover both sides on all issues. It also prevented media compression in which TV, radio, print, etc., could not be all owned by one or a few owners in a geographic region. That is why these vintage pre-90s broadcasts sound so different in tone and even visually. No bells, no whistles, no constant "breaking news" to keep people on edge and hooked into the station.
      Just the news, and nothing but the news.
      By the end of the 80s, major communication corporations had bottled up radio media to the point where AM started to become the bastion of conservative extremism we see today. That was also beneficial to the creation of Fox News by media mogul Rupert Murdoch during the 90s. It's a rather large and complex subject, but Ronald's ownership society boiled down to those with the most money can control and put forth whatever message they wish - and they have. His whole trickle-down theory was code for trickle up, which it accomplished exactly since his administration. Top management has since gone from 40x the lowest paid worker in their employment to almost 500x. It's not an accident that the super wealthy have amassed so much wealth since then, that they could give too carrots about the country itself anymore. They are as mobile as their wealth is, and see a country as nothing more than resources for further wealth building potential.
      But, we at the bottom sure know how to worship a flag and lose our minds should someone set one aflame.
      We now have two generations of republican extremists, weaned and raised on this stuff. This is why there are so many unbelievable people running about, believing things you didn't think possible. They've been raised to think anyone but conservative are enemies. Just as they think anyone who falls into the category of "other", is to be considered a threat.
      Even if you reinstituted the Fairness Doctrine, broke up all the concentrated ownership, and attempted to "reeducate" people through their schooling, it wouldn't change anything if at all for a very long time. It took two plus generations to create this mess, it will take two or three times that long to undo it.

      @@datatwo7405 You say all this and yet, for TV, Fox News and conservative media are the exception, not the rule. The left dominate TV, the right got talk radio but the free-thinkers went onto the Internet - no rules or laws were needed for that - everyone is free to publish whatever they want and it's on the consumer of the content to look for the other side(s) (because there's more than just two) - the way it ought to be.
      Unfortunately however, it seems that whilst the number of people using the Internet is getting larger, the number of websites the average person visits is getting smaller. Whilst the Internet will never be TV (thank goodness!), if people don't actively exercise their ability to choose, a path (or doctrine) will be chosen for them, and like sheep they will follow. It's on the individual to seek out new information, not a government to force it upon them.

    This is great. Thanks very much. I have been searching for an Ed Murrow documentary from 1959 called "The Lost Class Of '59" which is about the closing of schools in Norfolk Virginia to avoid court ordered integration.
    Is that available anywhere?
