  • In 1998, the Fisk family faced what some might call a dilemma. A relative of theirs came out. Having been raised orthodox Mormon, Dan and Sara grappled with numerous questions: How should they navigate this news? What would the future of their relationship with their loved one look like? How could they move forward without sacrificing their standing in the Church?
As you listen, you will learn from the Fisk's story.
For the Fisk family, Mormonism had always been central to them, then everything changed in 2017 when someone even closer to them came out: their daughter.
What happens when you allow yourself to lift, support, and love someone different than you?
    The Fisks share their story.

This couple is so amazing, an example of love. (Using that word because being a good example is such a Mormon ideal) And I love Sara's interpretation of the 13th amendment. Also, the conviction that God wants people to love and to live - such a clear-eyed outlook that allows belonging. Thank you Latter Gays for bringing it to us.

Brilliant Statement: “When you come out, you can’t take that back.”

Comment starting at 15:05 is inspired. “Either the Spirit reveals truth or it doesn’t. The very same mechanism by which I understood things to be good and right and true, I understood that [my brother-in-law] was born this way [gay], that God loved him exactly as he was, and it did not make sense that this was something he was choosing. I would just say that you can’t have it both ways. Either the Spirit speaks the truth through the ways we’ve been taught it does-and that’s how I felt it was true-or he doesn’t.” She’s right. The Spirit does speak truth. But not all believe it. The Spirit is testifying to thousands and maybe even millions of people that some people are born gay, that it is of God, that’s its divine, and they deserve to love and be loved and have companionship in life. Such a shame senior leaders in the Q15 have closed their minds and hearts to the Spirit on this most important subject. The Spirit cannot reveal anything to a closed mind, even if that mind belongs to a prophet. “Hence many are called, but few are chosen” and “Amen to the priesthood or the authority of that man.” (D&C 121: 40, 37).

Wow! What a lovely couple. Nice to have people in our corner and no less from a deeply religious back ground. It would be great if everyone was like this, understanding of their queer family members as so many aren't (My mother who passed away not accepting me) and many queer people have to still suffer even after so much equality has been given in Western countries like the USA and where I'm from, Australia. I feel sorry for those in countries that still live in the middle ages. Many of the hateful ones can't seem to get it through their heads that humans and animals are not all from the hetero "family" and are a STILL a part of the natural world whether they want to admit it or not.

Thanks for this wonderful podcast. I can relate, my older is gay and my daughter came out as bisexual. I then also came out or I should say I let her in. I am also bisexual as well. When I let someone in. I let people know I have been faithful to my wife. I just find both men and women sexually attractive, I just don't act on it.

I just want to add that the majority of the bigotry comes down to one thing.... the sexual act. Haters are focused just on that. We are more than sexual beings and I find it MORE offensive that these people are hung up on that one part of our queer lives. It makes me angry because they are too lazy to think past that one part of our lives. I will forever point this out to whoever needs it pointed out too.
