From a software dev versioning standpoint it didn't make any sense that all the things that were left out of original 3.23 were going to be in a .2 version, it should have been .24 from the get go.
I don't remember if CIG follows semantic versioning or not but versions are usually numbered by the impact* they'll have on the product (seen or unseen by the users)

@@Eagle6Airsoft He's correct if he's ONLY referring to 3.17, which was the only patch in 2022 and it was largely due to Covid so the comment is dishonest as worst, and disingenuous at best. Every year since 2018 has had numerous major patches in it, each with their own .x patches, because; wow! That's actually just how iteration works!
And you claiming that they split several release products in to different patches to "spread it out" is quite literally how game development works. That's not a valid criticism to make against CIG when that's what you're SUPPOSED to do. You split your tasks up based on the status of them during the patch review phase. If it's not stable enough, you push it in to the next build. That's how that works. That's how it works everywhere, in every industry.

So, the big thing for 3.23 was the replication layer. Pretty much everything else was a port from sqn 42, or a minor improved version, of which most of those things still need more work. Starmap, although search is great, still has issues with missing waypoints not filling in, especially on the back side of planets and moons. EVA has issues entering ship elevators, and push/pull missing. Some new ships, which progress there is always nice to see, but there are still tons that people have been waiting on for years. The amount of content added is all fine if it was a quarterly patch. Thing is, it took 6 months.

What I find frustrating about this is what you touched on at the beginning. They bit off more than they could chew. It makes them look like amateurs when they can't deliver what they said they could when they said they could.
From a general development perspective, no the numbering doesn't matter. What matters is that they understand the problems they're solving. Massive delays like this (server meshing being another example) do not engender a whole lot of confidence that CIG understands the game they're trying to make. How can they possibly be talking about 1.0 when they still can't deliver features on time? It makes me wonder if they will EVER properly deliver on what they sold us.
It's also another example of marketing based decisions rather than game related decisions. Someone making decisions cares more about the perception of the patch rather than completing promised deliverables. If this was a normal developer/publisher relationship heads would be rolling. Chris Roberts would have been fired again like he was from Freelancer back in the early 2000's.

This update to the version number makes more sense since it is a huge update. This is strictly speaking as a developer myself. Like you said, it does not matter what they call it. It is the same content. They should have called it 3.24 to begin with. There is a pattern for naming convention of versioning systems. I don't see this as a marketing or "we released 'n' number of patches this year". It makes no difference to us as players. I highly doubt that it will cause a delay in 4.0... that isn't how it works. ;)

I don't inherently disagree with it being a large update, even deserving of a change in patch number, BUT you're totally right, this was all 3.23 promised content and it feels strange for it to be labeled as 3.24. Had they not included this in the roadmap for 3.23: 3.23 would still be a pretty hefty patch, and no one would bat an eye at it being 3.24. Still agree with Mike, though, it’s ridiculous. And also the sole purpose - as usual - seems to be marking, before it was so they could call it “the biggest ever” now it’s “uuuh but we released more patches!”

But when you can suddenly change the name of 3.23.1 to 3.24, the Road Map's 4.0 suddenly doesn't seem as close as it was arriving.
That said... 3.23.1 turning into 3.24 might not be a big deal. If they deliver the same amount of .x patches as they would have in the first place, then 3.24 changes nothing. It's just a name.

All the nice content means nothing when the game is as unstable as it's been lately and I think that should be the primary focus over adding new stuff. There needs to be a stable base to build on.
While I fully understand developing a game like this takes a lot of time and resources, I can't believe it's still only in alpha after 12 years. And I really feel companies shouldn't be allowed to sell as much as they have been when a game is in this phase. Seriously, we have to buy ourselves into an early testing phase? Give them a reason to finish a good base game before they can earn big money or sell digital content for it! Bc at this rate, what's there to stop them from keeping it in alpha indefinitely? What about all the people who pay money for unfinished or half working products? (not to be confused with deliberately investing in a kickstarter project)
I can't say all that much because I haven't been in SC that long. I see a game/sim that could be absolutely beautiful and fun and that I'd love to spend some time and money on. But not like this. It's been completely unplayable for me these past weeks.

Renaming 3.24.2 to 3.24 probably means that cargo refactor and persistent hangars are far from ready to be introduced in a next few months, maybe even this year. When it took them a year to develop a roadmap to a roadmap that then went down in flames, and this happened after nearly a decade of development, they really really needed to do some organizational introspection and figure out why they were incapable to do basic forecasting. They are and have been for some time a gigantic company, not a plucky upstart. They haven't been in the 'early days' in any way for several years now, and they've already spent two budgets that most AAA games would dream of having yet still struggle not only to produce anything other than alpha quality placeholders, but even to say what's coming within a quarter let alone a year. Even this could be excusable if they didn't ALWAYS MISS ONE DIRECTION and ALWAYS WAIT until after the important sale to come clean. I bet Chris is going to waddle on to stage at concon and with a sociopathic grin announce that pyro is coming 2025 fo sho this time, and the sad part is that if I ever want even a piece of the game I opened my wallet for in 2012, I'm dependent on the deluded to keep feeding more than a quarter million US dollars PER DAY in to this furnace that turns cash in to lies and concept ship sales.
