  • I received an alert on my mobile app about a battery problem with my Generac 22kw generator. This was a simple fix.

If you want to check the battery voltage you need to disconnect a cable (preferably
negative cable) or disable the charger or you will only be reading the charger voltage, (which you can also read from the app). I think the easiest way to get a good test on the battery condition, without any special testers, is to check how low the voltage drops while the engine is cranking. I would like to see it drop to no less than 10v to 10.5v while cranking.

It was a maintenance reminder via the app. I was checking charging and battery condition along with terminal corrosion. The charger is still good and the terminal connection is tight. You are correct, to verify voltage integrity and charge one should disconnect the battery. Thanks for the post.

Seems to me that it would be a good idea to add a trickle charger to that car battery. Can't see how it could hurt. As Always, May God Bless you and yours!

Thanks for watching. The Generator has a built in charger already.

@@stiandwatchiq My thought was that it only cycles for 5 minute once per week. Not only is this not enough run time for keeping the battery at peak voltage but also creates the possibility of moisture buildup in the oil since the run time isn't long enough to bring the motor up to full heat effectively burning off the moisture. I'm guessing that you know the practice of a monthly run under load to prevent this. As Always, May God Bless you and yours!

Hello! I removed the monthly exercise of 5 min from the app and created an event in my email calendar that notifies me its time to exercise the generator. I run it for 30 mins every month to prevent that white colored oil (moisture) from the 5 min exercise time.

@@stiandwatchiq Sounds like you got the most important part covered. I would encourage you to look into a trickle charger option though. Also referred to as a battery tender, in fact the brand I use is called "Battery Tender" as it keeps the 12 volt battery at optimal charge at all times. They are absolutely essential with the small batteries used in motorcycles, jet skies, snow mobiles, riding mowers ect. and are proven to make the batteries last 3 to 4 or more times longer. Another example for a full size car battery is Jay Leno and many other car collectors that keep all of their cars hooked up to battery tenders. Many such as the Ferrari and even Corvetter come with them. Otherwise a battery charges itself through the breakdown of the lead and acid reaction, putting more wear and tear on it. Since nearly dying in 2017 I have everones best interest at heart and I'm only advising what I would consider doing myself. As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇

Ditch those lead acid batteries and go lithium.

The charger on this is not compatible with Lithium batteries. Thanks

Thanks for watching. I'm going to do my second oil change on the 22kw in a couple of weeks.

shouldn't you disconnect the battery and using a battery tester (like $25 at harbor freight) to check the CCA and voltage without the trickle charger connected? Batteries last 5-7 years but you can extend that by pulling the battery once a year or 2 and hooking up a desulfinator. I had two batteries fail so far (20 years). One with a cracked case (original one) and a second one from Costco. Now on my 3rd one and it is about 5 years old too.

Thanks for the comment. The message from the app said check the battery as a maintenance reminder. Yes to check the battery the charger should be disconnected. I was checking voltage at the battery with the charger connected, I was also checking for loose terminals and corrosion. I since added terminal protection to prevent corrosion and still check it at every maintenance alert, the battery is now 3 years of age.

I was hoping that you would confirm/show that the yellow light went out.
Im about to perform this exact same procedure ie. Yellow light alert.
    Thanks

Good morning, It took a few minutes for it to clear. The light went green after 30+ minutes because my WIFI signal is low in this area of my yard. Thanks for watching.

In order to verify your battery is good, you should remove the wires before testing the battery. The charger will put out 13 volts, giving you a false reading. I would also suggest doing a load test on the battery.
