You have the gift of story telling, something that's old world and not rehearsed - like a true Scottish storyteller. That's the best compliment I can ever give to someone.
As trail guide one summer at a place with 40 horses we got a busload of Girl Scouts come for a trail ride. Unexpected. Not all of our horses were for beginners but we matched them up carefully to each kid and I took the lead with another wrangler at the end and off we went single file on the mountain forest trail. Now only one trail was going to work with this big of a bunch and it involved crossing a logging road. We didn't want to dawdle in the road, but a pair of horses got into a little fight. Right in the road of course. At the same time we hear the airhorn of a logging truck. Adrenaline kicks in but got to think safety. My instincts were to get the kids off the road so I waved my arms and got half the bunch backed up and off and the other half across. About a second later the truck barreled around the bend. Well, we had our excitement and in the process of gathering the kids up and getting them back across to head on back I sure wanted them to have a good ride to remember and not that near death experience I knew it was. I'm telling stories about horse personalities and counting heads and looking if everyone is ok. They were all okay. After that adventure I took a few long rides by myself just exploring and thinking because I knew this was a close call. I really loved that job and enjoyed the people part of it very much. I had not forgotten when I was a beginner and wanted nothing more than a chance to ride. I'm fortunate my parents saw to it that I got riding lessons in various disciplines and eventually my own young firecracker of a 2 year old thoroughbred. (Race track reject for being swaybacked.) That's another story. Please keep telling yours. I liked this one too. I learned to ride living in other countries as a kid. Gonna watch all your videos because you have a deep understanding and you impart your wisdom and experience very well, sir.
My father’s grandfather is in the Cowboy Hall of Fame. You tell stories like my dad did…some from my great grandfather. It was a bittersweet joy to hear you tell this story.
Great Story! My first Horse( almost 50 years ago ) took off while I was on my first trail ride with Him . I knew I had to just ride it out and so off we went ! Just what you said in your story, heck of a ride . And it was a fence hidden in trees and bushes that stopped Him . Barbed Wire that i still have a scar from . Found a rock and got back up and rode back to the Barn and bought Him . It never happened again . He was why I am going to get my little Colt in October. I had a wonderful Horse and because of Him , I kept my love of Horses all these years. Yes Life can be a Heck of a Ride 😲 keep telling us your adventures! Your Born for this 😇
I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying your channel. I'm not much of a cowboy, but I am a country boy from Abilene, TX. I left Abilene shortly after high school and haven't really been back for any real time since then. I turned 55 last year and over the years, I have come to realize that simple logic is something that is in short supply in this world.
Then I found Dry Creek Wrangler School. Thank you for your words of wisdom. Feels like home.

Love your story time videos, absolutely enthralled with the western lifestyle. I'm from Kansas, just never pulled the trigger on getting to it. Working construction as of now, but really been thinking on ranching. Best to you and yours, have a blessed day.

Construction is cowboy enough! I am a cowboy at heart and worked in framing and rafter crews for 20 years ,drank lots of beer good times and cash.

My dad smoked cigars and when I was a kid I would got ear aches pretty often. Daddy would light up, I would crawl up in his lap and he would blow that cigar smoke in my ear. I don't know why, but it always seemed to help. He may have been just blowing smoke (LOL) but I'm convinced that there was something to it!!

Hello Dwayne, Allen LeHew here, I don't know if you remember me from Tennessee but I rode a few times with you and your sons along with my friends Michael Cunningham and Van Daniels at Cane Creek Tennessee. When I last seen you , you were moving your family to Alaska to work at an outfitting and packing place. It's been many years and I'm happy to see your still at it . As I am myself , still climbing aboard many horses and working with many horses . Still Love the challenge of helping horses with people problems. Just wanted to say hello and tip my hat to a fellow horseman that's also homed his craft for a great many years . I'm still learning everyday .
Allen, I do remember you! Yes, I’m still at it. I don’t start colts any more, but I do still help troubled horses (and their people) work through issues some times. Good to hear from you, I’m glad you’re doing well and still in the saddle

I can't even try to imagine the stories you'd tell, Dwayne, if you ever get invited to Russia.
They have so many horse-breeding places there.
Or maybe even better if you go teach them wrangling in Georgia (Caucasus).
The former Soviet republic, not one of the States.
With your great experience in mountain riding, you'd do a wonderful job there.
And these Georgian guys are absolutely fantastic about hospitality.
Boy, I really hope you go there some time and tell stories about it.

My wife is actually from that part of China; grew up in a small village very close to the DPRK border in Liaoning Province. When we had our wedding in her hometown (we got married in my home state of NC, then had a ceremony in China), and I learned there that the way people evoke Americans in China is with cowboy music and themes. When my family and I entered the reception hall for our wedding, my dad, for whom I was interpreting what the MC was saying (I went to Peking University and worked as a document translator there for a while), leaned towards me and asked me very quietly: "is that the Magnificent Seven theme they just started playing?" It was, as soon as the Americans entered the hall - the first white people almost anyone in the village had ever seen - they started playing the theme for a western movie!
My cousin and a good friend of mine, both about 13 yrs my senior, both got me into cigars about 15 years ago. Love the Maduros, various brands. Acid Kuba Kubas are my favorites. Love your videos. Thanks.

Here in Southern Illinois our evening are getting cooler too, uppers 70's with 90% humidity. Absolutely miserable!
Love the stories and the tips. I am a cigar enthusiast myself, I always like to here someone else's take on cigars. In the end it all comes down to what you like as an individual, but it is possible that a new door might be opened if you are open to new ideas.

Quit smoking over 20 years ago but recently purchased 2 pipes along with the beginner kit of tamper etc & couple of tins of tobacco. So add pipes to the cigar vid

No one's around almost dark, and we're flying. My brother had the mechanical hackamore tied on one side with leather shoelaces. The shoelaces broke and the horse shifted to high gear a

I love cigars. I have around 200 at home. Some are very good some are daily smokers but I'd love to hear a lot more about the cigars.

I had a similar experience with an runaway horse but there was no fence. Just bucking all the way across the field. Lol
You reminded me of an old story. My uncle rented a horse barn. But Mrs Sara owned it, and another Barn on the same property. She had a little Tac store, and sold Ice cream. Orange push ups! I ask Dad for a quarter, yes it's that long ago, and I jumped on my cousins black pony. I was 9-10. Well, that pony didn't like anyone but her. My dad said "He's gonna throw you if you ride him", as did several there. Bug my horse wasn't saddled, and it's 100 yards to the Orange push up. He did wonderful. Trotted nice, stopped at the store, I got off, tied him to the Hitch'n post. Got my Orange push up, got back on him, and Up he came! It felt like he bent plum backards! I had reigns in one hand, orange push up in another, and he came down in a dead, Wide Open Run! He intended to make me drop that push up, or come off! But I held on, never tried to stop him. I love to go fast anyway. And he came to a stop exactly where we started. Everybody was "Told You! Great ride thou". A few minutes later, a man walked up from the other barn, and said, "Well I'll be darn! I was going to buy you an ice cream because I just knew you dropped it". I told him no, Daddy wouldn't have got me another one if I did. But, the ol Man have me another Quarter for the ride. He said he couldn't believe I stayed on, much less held on to my ice cream.
I had forgotten about that till you told this. I loved growing up at that barn. Sara refused to renew my uncle's lease. She didn't have the customer base my uncle had, and despised that. So, she figured if he wasn't there, she'd get it all. Didn't go that way. She was not a people person. But, it was 10 years of great memories thou.

My dad bought me a horse when I was 12. Supposedly it was a “Tennessee Walker”, but for $50 I didn’t think he was. His name was Tony and I would ride him to the dairy farm where two of my classmates (twin boys) lived. There was always cold chocolate milk there. We would sort of harness our horses and tie a wooden Coca-Cola case behind them for a sled. On my way home (about 5 miles), I would pretend that I was a Texas Ranger being chased by Indians. I pretended to be shot and I would slump over and tell Tony to take me home. Of course he knew the way because that’s where the feed was.
Totally enjoyed that story! That definitely gave me a good laugh today and food for thought. Thank you.

Sir, my name is Dylan Noble I will do and would do anything to work for you as a ranchhand I’m a God-fearing man and I believe that He wants me to reach out and see if I can get a job at your ranch and learn from you. I’m 30 years old officially moved to Montana for fishing and hunting and camping from Spokane, Washington and every day my phone pops up with your motivational speeches and talks. I really think that it’s for a reason. I plan on working at Goosewing Ranch in Wyoming this May through the summer. All I have is my my backpack tent, my bike, my fishing pole, a bunch of other stuff to help me survive through my walk. I hope that I can get a message back and start walking towards you.
