Hey Everyone! Today we're reviewing the new P5R 5 string bass from Sire. This 5 string precision has a major vintage vibe to it, and Sire has installed a new pickup to give this P that vintage tone to match the looks. Let's put this P through its paces in this full review of the Sire P5R!

I love my own channel, but I'm "low-key" jealous (as the kids say) of bass channels like yours. Great channel, brother.
I am amazed at the consistency of tone across all the strings, especially that B-string! And at this price point Sire is really killin' it! Just goes to show that you do not need a longer scale length to get a great B-string sound. Quality of construction and materials is what makes it happen.

I recently got myself the v5R 5 string,and i got to say she's beautiful to play,im considering the p5R in 4 string version..having already bought the m5 4 string I've decided to sell it,dont get along with the neck,replacing it with the p5R after hearing this demo im sold,excellent video Lobster....
Commenting again to say: I got to try one of these basses recently. Amazing build quality, and while I think the tone is more "vintage" than the P5, it still lacks a bit of low end (though they did slightly improve the low end response, at least to my ears). They're still using pickups that are designed to use with a preamp, instead of designing pickups that sound good without the preamp.

Another good video. Hard to believe Sire still has not found a source for good lightweights tuners but at least they improved the pickup
I’ve never owned or much wanted to own a Sunburst Fender anything because that finish scheme was so common, and I’m not much of a passive bass guy any more, but the “back to basics” Precision bass tribute/copy (?) with Sunburst and five-string format is inspiring some old-school bass love. I think I could really enjoy this. Maybe not mega-want, but the interest is starting to heat up. Sucks about those tuners, though.
The frequency spectrum analysis is definitely interesting and a plus. Please keep this feature for future reviews and comparisons.

How would you say this bass fares in comparison with a regular Fender Precision, tone-wise? I love the classic Precision tone, and the previous Sire P5 was a pretty big disappointment when it came to the low end.
Neck dive is my biggest pet peeve in a bass or guitar. It's unbelievable to me that companies are okay with charging hundreds or even thousands of dollars for instruments that customers are going to have to spend even more money on just to fix such a basic issue.

Thanks! I was thinking about trying something new here because IMO in editing they sounded very similar but the difference was more drastic in person. I think the curves were a nice little way of showing the difference in character visually, even if it is subtle
Thanks again Lobster. Any dead spots like those that plague so many FSO's? How do these basses 4 or 5 compare with Fender's American Pro stuff quality-wise. I already know that the price points are very different, but price aside, how do they stack up? After seeing this I may have to try one against my American Pro II Precision V. Sire have listen to your good advice ! And I think the V10 is unbeaten because the P basses had only one good sound !
The V basses has several better sound ! Ok the P bass is a little better than when you play the V bass with the neck pickup but I can take that but the slap sound and the Jaco sound and so on it’s far away better than the P bass .
So we all look foreward when you test V10 dx five strings !!!! 😀😀😀
OH, MY GOODNESS! What a P tone, and what a CLEAR-SOUNDING B! I have been reluctant to get a 5, due to B strings sounding too muddy and unclear! This may change my mind!

This is a really great sounding instrument with a classic P-Bass tone. Honestly my biggest complaint about Sire basses is the weird shape of the headstock. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I just don't like it. (I think it's the flatness of the end.)
I"m intrigued by the whole 5-string P-bass thing. It's not a bass I'd buy (I think that even with 3 basses I've really got more than I need) but it's one I'd love to try...

PLEASE do a video on a passive 4 string Thunderbird. I watched the 5 string version, but it is a VERY different animal than my Epi. Goth Thunderbird 4. Every time I play this bass, it tries to commit suicide (neck dive), and I would very much like to see if new tuners would help me out at all (I enjoyed the 5 string video).
These are great basses. The only change that I made to my site P5R is that I put a Radioshop P-Bass pickup into it.
The stock pickup was great, I just love the Radioshop pickups (more).

This is a great sounding p bass. Even with the tone know all the way down it still sounds great.. love it but still not a fan of the headstock.

I got one of these a few months ago and put the lighter Gotoh tuners on it (thanks for the recommendation Lobster!) as well as some TI flats - it's fabulous. Feels great to play if you like a wider neck (which I do) and sounds just like what I want a P bass to sound like. In particular I was worried that the low B string might sound a little out of place given the old-school character of the sound, but it really fits well with the rest of the range of the bass and is sounds really natural IMO. I found the dynamics to be any and everything one could need. Tuners do seem a bit heavy.So compromise,eh,I,Istill like it.

Do you think you’d have to modify anything to run flats on it? I feel like the bar stile string tree might be too close to the nut and you’d end up with a hard angle there. Flats don’t like angles lol. I’m looking into buying one of these and I looooove flats on a P bass so I’m trying to figure that out haha
I installed a bar retainer on my p bass which has flats on it. It's fine. It's an angle, yeah, but not like you'd get from the through-body bridge design.

What would you say makes a good B string on a 34 inch scale? Was told hex core strings are the way to go for a stiffer B. Anything else I should look at? Getting a Yamaha as my first 5 and could use any pointers you can pass along.
I can tell you that string retainer has alot to do with the definition of the B string
@@OlandoMcCall how so? Never heard that before. But people claim a B string get's tighter when you put the tuner on the far side of the headstock (i. e. by reversing the ehadstock) which is bullshit from a physics standpoint. What does make a difference is the overall stiffness of the neck which Sire accomplishes by using roasted maple.

there would have to be since an active bass can push DB. A passive bass cannot do that.

@@Marekki2202 It's affecting tuning stability, but maybe it's more prominent on guitars. Maybe it's just a rumor. ;) I'm not sure because I'm buying instruments with tilted headstocks anyway.
I tried one of those and don't agree with you =P They definitely can develop a fret poke even with those rounded edges. And quite a nasty one.
I've never claimed the rolled edges can't poke, but TBH a lot of developed fret poke often has to do with the climate the instrument is stored in. You can absolutely develop poke on these rolled edges, however if you do and get it addressed it likely won't return.
What is a "plec performed"?
A Plek is a professional setup, the frets are dressed and polished, the nut, bridge, truss rod, pickup height and intonation are adjusted for optimal playing by a guitar tech or luthier.
Yeah a PLEK is a computer fret leveling plus tech does full dressing and everything. If you love an instrument, get it PLEK'D and it will play the best it can. Usually 2-300 per instrument but well worth it if you have a bass you really dig
