  • Here it is! The ground-breaking new #americascup class race boat concept. The #AC75 is the bold new high performance fully foiling monohull. @emiratesteamnz
    Grant Dalton: “Once foiling, the AC75 has the potential to be faster than an AC50 both upwind and downwind.”

    Wasn't happy when I heard they were retiring the flying catamarans, but I'll give this boat a chance based on the simulation. For the people who want traditional yachts, there's thousands of those races going on all over the world. There's only one event that can even partially financially justify the massive expenditures required for these technological designs. America's Cup needs to continue to push the limits, because if they don't nobody else will.

    A Classic stroke of genius to return the America's Cup to the monohull platform, while still retaining the heart and soul of America's Cup as "fast" and tactical, which it truly is about.

    I'll admit, I was skeptical about ditching the catamarans. I loved seeing them on the SF bay, and the energy of their competition had me riveted to their sight. This is definitely a radical shift, but it is by no means a full return to the yachts we had before. My only question is how the foil above water might endanger a neighboring crew, I don't think we'll see these getting as close together as we have recently, but that isn't a bad thing.

    it was February 2000, Luna Rossa was challenging Black Magik in the Gulf of hauraki
    for the conquest of the America's Cup. Millions of Italians in front of the TV at three o'clock at night,
    sighing to push the wind on the sails.
    And in the morning, walking down the street after a sleepless night, when you met someone with your same tired expression, you understood that it was someone like you, a bro of the night crazy for sailing, without needing to say a word, a simple nod of agreement was enough.
    that was the real America's cup

    • @CarkeekW
      @CarkeekW Před 6 lety +3

      both foils will have to be down in the prestart or you can't maneuver , i would laugh if i saw a boat going to the box with one foil set in the air for a start. I wonder if the total width will be any wider than a Cat though , possibly not.

    • @ParkerShinn
      @ParkerShinn Před 6 lety

      @Wayne Carkeek I disagree. I could see a situation where a windward boat ducks a leeward boat to try to win the pin. With their foil up it could cut straight through the stern of the other boat and kill somebody.

    • @CarkeekW
      @CarkeekW Před 6 lety +7

      perhaps they will simply ban foils from being in anything but the downward position in the start sequence to make certain , at least we are dealing with professional sailors who have time to understand the craft and are paid to do so. Painting all foils rescue orange might be an idea ;)

    • @atheistponcho
      @atheistponcho Před 6 lety +3

      Wayne Carkeek you must remember when BAR came crashing down on Dean Barker on Japan in the most recent America's cup. These new boats it might not have ended as well. But I agree fouls down before the gun would be prudent. A dial down on the beat with these flying appendages could still go wrong fast with massive closing speeds.

These monohull sailors just need to come over to the darkside, the Multihull world. I mean I have heard this for years, next monohull design will be faster than a multihull. The around the world sailing record is not set at 40 days and the monohull record is 72 days. All speed records are set by multihulls. Just freaking stop messing with you delusions, and come to reality. And for real exciting sailboat racing check out the Extreme Racing Series.

    The faster you go, the weather foil might create lift to leeward, against the counter weight and the lift of the submerged foil. A self righting 75 footer might put crew in the water at another set of risks other than the initial risk of a boat that big and fast going down.

    Thank you Team New Zealand! I hate the fact that my country lost to you this year, but monohulls should be cooler. I loved the fact that you won with such a small budget! Also, duuuh on having your crew pedal to create hydrualic pressure vs grind. Your leg muscles are much bigger than your arm muscles. My boss @ www.katomarine.com won the AC with Dennis Conner driving Stars & Stripes in 1987. Starboard grinder JIm Kavle. He was 2nd in the Star worlds when he met Dennis in Newport where he'd come to recruit crew. Jim trashed both of his shoulders preparing and racing Stars & Stripes. He even had stress fractures in his wrist(s?) before and during the Cup, he just taped the crap out of them until they won, and had surgery or let it heal when he got back home to the Philly PA area after the races.
    Jim's son Porter is following in his father's footsteps, having won the high school triple handed keel boat national championship in St. Petersburg, FL last weekend. Not some rich, expensive private school either. :) Annapolis High School, a county school that AYC or SSA allows to use their 420's to race in.
    I've worked with several Kiwis teaching ski school on Mammoth Mountain in CA 2003-2005. Almost all were amazing skiers and very cool guys, really fun to work and party with. :) :) :) If we don't win it back from y'all in 2021, I hope you all win it again.

    Am I missing something or did the windward/Starboard boat clearly foul the leeward/S boat at about 1:52? Perhaps not a good idea when the leeward boat is armed with that decap-o-foil. Emirates may have been hunting Prada while P it was on port. But, by 1:52, Prada clearly has born off and is on Starboard. I know it's just a promo video, but it seems like a stupid error.

    UFOs - Unidentified Foiling Objects. I miss seeing those bows crashing through the waves. The beauty, emotion and passion of sailing is absent with these boats.

    I can't understand why they don't get more creative with the course. When in San Francisco it could have been easy to work Alcatraz into the mix more so boats had to make a tactical choice. A boat behind could make a right call and make up ground. For the most races, its over at the start then watching follow the leader. Very little chance unless the lead boat does something bone headed. Bring on the Tech, but add more human drama with making a decision.

      yeah but its not being held in san fran, might be a bit off coarse if they have to sail around alcatraz

    Hearing Peter Montgomery in this clip reminds me of the 2007 America's Cup final race 7 between Alinghi and New Zealand, with Alinghi dialing them, and NZ getting a penalty; then the wind dies at the finish as NZ completes its penalty turn, with only a one second winning margin for Alinghi. The race was decided by skill and tactics, plus a little luck. Nothing that has happened in the AC since that race has been even remotely as exciting. Glad to see monohulls return to the AC; however, the hinged outboard foil/keel (or leeboard?) needs to be reconsidered. This is match racing. Imagine the spectacular dismasting that will result when that chicken leg gets caught in the other boat's rigging.
