- Here is my first 10 days in Serbia! Serbians are very friendly, love dogs (not cats), they are tall and even babushkas speak English here! Well, watch the video to see more!
In Serbia they smoke A LOT, enjoy their cheap cigarettes. They have amazing cafe culture and their fast food is top tier, no need for american crap here. Sad to hear what they dont do in Russia compared to Serbia/Europe. Serbia feels like home for me, as a northern European

The statue of Stefan Nemanja is new from 2 years ago, it is made by a Russian sculptor, most Serbs were also shocked by its size, we are not used to grandiose things. The cats are all over the smaller streets, not in the main ones.

In the Balkans you use "zdravo" or "ciao" when speaking with friends. "Dobro jutro/Dobar dan/Dobro vece" is more formal and more polite.
For example if a teenager told "Zdravo" to an elderly person it would be considered rude.

Brutalist buildings in Yugoslavia are partly similar to Soviet architecture, partly unique Yugoslavian, and partly inspired by the architecture of the French architect Le Corbusier. Belgrade is much more beautiful in spring and summer. Since I see that you are mainly interested in Brutalist architecture (although I am not a fan of it), there are quite a few interesting buildings that you have missed. As for old Belgrade, a lot was missed, only Republike Square and Sava Square were shown. As for English, we have it as a compulsory subject at school. From the fifth grade we have to take another foreign language (it depends from school to school, sometimes it's French, sometimes Russian, sometimes German, sometimes Italian). Another reason is that we, as Yugoslavia, unlike the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, were exposed to American and British films and series as well as music, we were something between East and West, more precisely we had something from both worlds and at the same time we were and we were not part of both worlds.

You can visit St. Sava Temple (biggest church on the Balkans), you can walk from Knez Mihailova pedestrian main street, past hotel Moskva, towards square Slavija and keep going until you get to the temple. Also church Sveti Marko or Saint Marc and park Tashmaidan is near centre, not far from the Parliament building. There is Ruski dom of culture on street Kraljice Natalije 33, there is a statue of Tzar Nikolai 2nd, not far from Hotel Moskva, just dowhill towards the park and river.

A big factor in why English is good in Serbia is that here films and tv shows have subtitles, not dubbing. Only children's shows are dubbed. So you listen to English your whole life and it's easier to pick it up. It's the same in other countries that do not use dubbing, like Romania, Greece, Portugal, Sweden...

Yugoslavia was only country in so called communist block which was open to traveling or study to western country
we have influence of western culture our shops where fully supply with western products . Soviets did not know what coca cola or jeans means till 1990 and foreign movies they could saw only on some festivals or special occasion....

Serbia was great, due to earthquake in my country I had to return early but I want to visit again in the future. Delicious food, great nature, kind and helpful people. All you can ask for.

Serbian physicist and mathematician (1875-1948).
Try also going to Niš , Serbia’s third biggest city, where many Roman Emperors like Constantine the Great (not the one known on CZcams as Inside Russia 😂) were born and raised.

Hotel Yugoslavia was bombed by NATO in 1999. Part of hotel is still in ruins and ready to be sold. Trams are mainly old fashioned. MTS is Serbian company not Russian. English language is mandatory in school. Serbs love and respect Russia due to the historical and religion ties. I hope that 150000 Russians who found new home in Serbia are feeling good and welcome.
I would like to add that being pro-Russian does not make us anti-American by default. I would say that we are not anti-west at all. Most of the people growing up in the late 70s and later on have been heavily exposed to the American culture through western movies, cartoons, music etc. However, we are mostly anti-NATO.

The city is good and has a lot of content, you just have to find some Serbian friends for a full experience. Buildings from the socialist era are of good quality, but due to financial problems, they are poorly maintained and no investment is made in renovation. You will be treated equally and without prejudice in Serbia, free and safe, like nowhere else in Europe.
mts is not a Russian company, it's state owned telecom company.. Telekom Srbija. You say "zdravo" to people you are close with, Dobro/dobar jutro/dan/vece is polite greeting to strangers.

Zdravo is the middle formality greeting. Dobro jutro/dobar dan/dobro veče is the top level of formality, and the lowest is ćao. To older people and to customers you don't know you would not normally say zdravo. And family members and friends normally say ćao to each other. You can say zdravo to a worker in a shop, as a customer, if the worker is close to your age or younger.
Looks interesting, friendly and full of history, yes please read up and show us some cultural spots! I hope you meet some local people who will invite you for some home cooking.
Economy 101, Serbia is a small country of only 6.8milion people, apartments are limited resource, 100k Russian IT guys, freelancers etc came here, they have money and we Serbs are greedy, lets be honest here, so ofc prices skyrocketed, i live in Belgrade, you can't rent anything under 500 euros per month which is crazy considering median wage in Belgrade is 500 euros and average is 700... So obviously landlords don't have Serbian clients in mind but Russian IT folks. We count in Euros because our domestic currency is chained to Euro so course is always stable, that's why it's easier to count in Euros because numbers are smaller and exchange rate never changes, our currency is just cosmetic!
Thanks for explaining things! Well, but for me not only the apartments, but also the cost of products, food and so on feels expensive. Maybe especially after I travel to some cheap countries like Vietnam, Turkey and so on. But it feels even more expensive than the South Korea as well(in case of food). And sometimes even 2 times more expensive than Russia (is some cases). Taxis for example as well (but gasoline cost much more here as well)
@@CrazyRussianSergey Taxi here is considered a luxury not a commodity, also going to the restaurant. If you want cheaper food you will need to learn to cook and get in touch with farmers market and your local butcher shop. We speak English because our education, you can't finish elementary school unless you speak 2 foreign languages, English is mandatory and for second you can choose either French German Spanish or Russian, depends on the school. But English is mandatory.
@@CrazyRussianSergey Well, Belgrade is capitol, so it si logically most expensive place in Serbia. Ironically, zone arround Hotel Yugoslavia is considered to be elitistic neighbourhood, not friendly to small wallets :) As same as center. But even if you venture 5-6 km toward suburbs of Belgrade, you would see serious change in prices. All we that leave in Belgrade and have famillies run away to suburbs, becasue centers of New and Old Belgrade long time ago became unlivable for plain working people...

Make sure you go to Kalemegdan park at the end of Knez Mihailova pedestrian street,it has a great fortress and great views. You can visit Zemun part of Belgrade,it was part of Austrohungary until end of world war 1. Then historic Skadarlija restaurant street is nice to see too. Novi Sad, Nish and other places in the North especially are pretty to see. You can take train or overnight sleeper train to Montenegro too, is visa free and beautiful there.

Я сам Серб но не был дома двадцать лет :) интересно было посмотреть о своем родном городе. С годами человек теряет связь со близкими людьми, к сожалению. Я тоже когда бываю в Москве чувствую себя как дома, хотя я и русским владею норм а это помогает. Кстати до 1989. года Югославия была развита больше чем многие европейские страны восточного блока типа Польши и Чехословакии а Румыния и Болгария вообще как деревня 😂 но потом явно что то пошло не так. Sorry to see you were scammed by the vending machine, but it was very kind of you to offer the coffee to the random people, you are a nice person with a good heart. About the dog shit,.here in Montreal Canada 90% of the people pick it up in small bags as well, it's considered bery bad manners not to pick it up and I've seen people yell not very nice things at people who don't pick up after their dog shits. We don't have a dog, we have cats but they always stay inside so we don't have this problem. I really like to travel with you in your videos, it's like going on a trip but staying on the couch at home. Thank you for this video, i really enjoyed it.

Go to Russian Graveyard in Belgrade, where many Russians heroes liberating Belgrade in WW2 had fallen and are buried there, and honored each year. You can take transport 12 on Slavia square, so you can see part of King Alexander's boulevard , up to New Cemetery.
Nearby, go there for lunch in Zlatar kafana, where they serve wild game meals.
Go visit Russian Orthodox church, just between church of St. Marko's and Serbian Parliament and post office huge building in Tasmajdan park in central Belgrade.
Optional - Go to Belgrade Zoo, walk along Tzar Dushan's street and catch bus #26 on Dorcol and end up in Jerkovic. Then take bus #18 to Zemun. Then take #17 to end and take #31 in opposite direction to get you back to city center. That's to see real life outside of center.

I also noticed that in Serbia they accept € almost everywhere, while in Bosnia they don't, and Bosnian currency is directly connected to € with a fixed rate but they still don't accept €, and even usually have signs in multiple languages that they only accept Bosnian Marks.
well yes and no. Some cities (Banja Luka matter of fact) accept Euro payment
I live in Belgrade and literally I can't pay with Euros at all. Maybe foreigners can because they are not afraid they are control by the government. But it's strictly forbidden.
As for metro in Belgrade, we had plans for metro since early 20th century but they always postponed it for later. Now in last few years they revived the project and Gov already started building metro depot for line 1 on the outskirts of Belgrade, they say line 1 will be built by 2027 (i don't really believe it but will see).
Fun fact is that Belgrade have big network of underground tunnels that is used by railways, mostly for city railway network but also national.

Did you meet any Russians in Belgrade. One of my friends is there, her company moved all its staff from SPB to Serbia when the War started so I guess there are lots of others too?
I’ve met like around 10 Russians already. Also constantly see them on the street talking by phone or talking to each other. I wouldn’t say it’s like crazy amount of them, but I see them everyday

Bro, new English word for you. When you spoke about the pronunciation of Vladimir. The word you needed was syllable. Some words have multiple syllables. Sometimes you accentuate the first syllable n English, Russian language accentuates the middle syllable in Vladimir

Most of those beautiful, old buildings in Belgrade, and in the bigger cities in Serbia, were designed by Russian architects, who were sheltered by the then Kingdom of Yugoslavia, King Alexander. Among the refugees from Imperial Russia, there were the most intellectuals, architects, engineers, doctors, so the contribution of the Russians is that those old parts of Serbian cities look the way they look today. After the First World War and before that the Balkan wars and the Ottoman Empire, Serbia was exhausted and weakened. Not to mention that the Russians helped the Serbs to free themselves from Ottoman slavery. Remember how Count Raievsky (Vronsky) died. It is the contribution of the Russians that the center of Belgrade and other major cities look like this today. Of course, in the Second World War, those cities were bombed and were left in ruins. The most Niš (67 times) then Belgrade, Leskovac (very often sneakily, during holidays)... The Russians have never bombed us, we have the same soul, origin, character and mentality. That is why it is not strange that from the depths of our Serbian (Slavic) soul we love Russians and Russia and rejoice in Russians on an essential level.
Europeans novadays speak English everywhere, many different languages in Europe so lengua franca is English, hefore WW2 it was German and before that French like the Russian upperclass also spoke French at one time..people learn English at school and it is very important to know well. And we are exposed to English by popular music and films, some countries do not have films dubbed to their language.
Ahh yes. The subtitles also the reason I was told. Before I also saw subtitles in Finland since they are a small country. But it helps to learn the foreign languages

In your nice neighborhoods most people pick up their dog poops when out walking their dogs. Neighbors get in big arguments over this, if your dog poops in their yard and you don’t pick up.

There is some kind of so called metro 🤣See Kalemegdan fortress when you are already in the city center (you were close just go straight from Insa clock . Maybe Ada even tho it`s not a season and it is lil cold for a walk near the lake, that`s not far...maybe Avala tower but that`s lil far. If you get time go to other towns, like Kraljevo, Prokuplje, Nis to get the real picture. Cats are much loved as same as dogs it`s just there are less of them walking the city center. I got two.

Maybe visit all the countries in the region? I would you like to see Croatia and the Adriatic Coast. Find barber shops thats always entertaining, dress like a local shopping, where are the pretty girl’s exploration in each of the capitals. You need to build your brand, why Crazy? It is your choice. Your can create a scale, how well is a Russian expiate excepted, how easy was crossing the border, scale from 1-10.

Lidl works till 22h (10pm) even on Sundays. It is a German company I think. There are several in Belgrade as I know it is a huge supermarket. One of the cheaper.
Yes here in UK people must clean up after their dogs. But yes you are right there are cultural differences where in some countries the dogs clean up after the people…
When my grandad had to learn German, he told me ; first foreign language you have to learn, you know its the occupator's language .
Hence how and why so many Serbians speak good mentioned language. Its not something to be proud of, its only nature that you need to understand your enemy .

This blocs have been made like europian arhitecture modern during 70.-ties, and 80.-ties. Yuo can see these blocs in Wien, Paris, german cities... Hotel Yugoslavia is project of some franch style. MTS is serbian state telecom, not russian.

It’s my mistake. It really reminded me of the Russian MTS mobile company. Before I saw some Russian companies here like Gazprom and Lukoil so I thought it’s Russian MTS
@AO same happens in Russia all the time, but with private companies as well. Some of them on purpose sell your information, Like to banks and so on. And then those banks call you all the time to offer some product

Princip's family name originated from the nickname his great grandfather had. He was very strong, tall and proud so he got the nickname which in local dialect means "Prince", actually that is how Slavs in Northern Dalmatia and Western Bosnia called Doge of Venice. So the Austrian Prince was killed by someone who had familty name Prince. Gavrilo Princip himself was not very tall and strong.
Maybe you can visit Varna, Bulgaria! I think cost of living is very cheap in Bulgaria.

@CrazyRussianSergey So funny as our travelling Russian friend finds out he is in a cultured Slavic country in the middle of Europe and everyone is capable of communicating in English 😂. And people are friendly and polite as well as it is the norm in civilised societies.

By the way Serbia has candidate state status to join EU together with more countries. Serbia and Montenegro have been described as the frontrunner candidates, and projected that they would join by 2025, during the next mandate of the European Commission. Ukraine and Moldova were subsequently recognised as official candidates, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia amongst others are recognised as potential candidates and were asked to complete additional reforms before becoming official candidates for membership. Bosnia and Herzegovina then received official candidate status in December 2022. And there are more (Georgia, Turkey, …) but Russia’s aggression towards their closest “brother country” Ukraine 🇺🇦 is focusing everyone on this outrageous war there at the moment.

We say good day and good evening and good morning as a respectfull "Hi". We use it when we greet ppl we are not close or not knowing them. If we know person we greet them with "Hi" or some other greetings.

Look at the Flags of Russia and Serbia Sergey. Very, very similar language and alphabet. Serbia - Siberia. They migrated to present day Serbia. Tartaria. It got too cold and they left. So did Bulgarians (Volga-rians). Hungarians (Central steppe).
Kod nas dosta ljudi govore engleski ali ima dosta njih koji govore i ruski. Imamo decaka koji ima 10 godina iz komsiluka koji govori ruski kao materni. Naucio je preko filmova i serija.

Everyone knows English mainly because we watch from a joung age films without a narrator, while in Russia it is a practice for your actors to gives their voices to the original actors in the movie!!! So our Serbian actor Miloš Biković didn't use his voice in Russian movie's either, but the Russian actor gave him his voice!!! We Serbians read the translation of the film in the lower pert of the screen, and in this way we get used to the English language more easily!!!🇷🇸🐺🇷🇺🐻🇷🇸🐺🇷🇺🐻🇷🇸🐺🇷🇺🐻
Serbia seems a lot closer culturally to Russia than Turkey!
Culturaly we are closest to romanians bulgarians and greeks. Coming from paleo balkan nations and the byzantine empire. We only have some turkish food and words but before the turks came to europe and conquered greece they allready shared a lot of things with slavic people and other europeans since thousands of years.
Why should we be close culturally to Turkey? Not only Serbia was occupied by ottomans but whole south Easter Europe and Hungary. So only Serbia should be close to Turkey? We our orthodox slavic people and Europeans , compare to Turkish that are Muslim, non slavic and Asians

Completely understand you Sergei, we also mostly don't agree our government. Before this war strongest feeling for Russia to me was pretty negative as comunism was introduced here through USSR.
But this dirty proxy US war erased all the negative prejudice towards Russia so only positive impressions remained.
Visiting Ruska crkva, Aleksandar Nevski crkva and finaly Hram Svetog Save, mostly gift from Russia may help you understand love that you must feel from locals here.
