Carnatic Vocal - Marugelara - Golden Greats - Dr.M.L.Vasanthakumari

Madras Lalitangi Vasanthakumari (popularly referred to as MLV) (3 July 1928 - 31 October 1990) was a Carnatic musician and playback singer for film songs in many Indian languages. MLV and her contemporaries D.K.Pattammal and M.S.Subbulakshmi were popularly referred to as the "female trinity of Carnatic Music. A prime disciple of the G. N. Balasubramaniam, she was the youngest among the established musicians of that era, and was the youngest female awardee of the Sangita Kalanidhi award.
Classical music is art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western music (both liturgical and secular). It encompasses a broad span of time from roughly the 11th century to the present day.
The term "classical music" did not appear until the early 19th century, in an attempt to distinctly canonize the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Beethoven as a golden age. The earliest reference to "classical music" recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary is from about 1836.

I heard her fifty years ago in a live concert in Tyagaraja Gana Sabha, Hyderabad. I couldn’t imagine how she sat through the programme almost lasting over three hours singing Kruti after Kruti. An amazing singer. A legend.

This is first time hearing M.L.Vasanthakurami amma voice. Her voice and clarity is more and more clear than M.S

MLV is obviously a better Carnatic singer than MS. MS lacked creativity. She cannot render a kriti without rehearsing it. Thats why all the requests from audience were vetted by her hubby before it reached MS. Also MS never had a disciple that proves, she was a good singer but not a great Carnatic musci exponent. I may be pounced upon but MLV amma was class apart. Her creativity in swaraprastaras, alaapanas, chittaswaras... something fabulous.
