Beautifully said, as always. I also never realized RID originally rejected ASL as a valid language….mindblown. Sort of humorous- in a way they were delegitimizing the nature of their own work. It is truly sad it often comes at the expense of those being “served” though, or like you more accurately phrase it, consumers. Thank you for your vlogs :)
What you are saying, MJ, is why I chose NAD when I wanted to become a certified interpreter. It just made more sense to me that a Deaf organization should have that responsibility.
Oh my goodness, this is a very interesting and thank you for sharing with your previous experience what you been thru and what you have been seen all that kind of situation with issues. I’m deaf woman and I usually say “ Don’t Audism, period,”
I love how well you say it. And it's so true! RID is about hearing interpreters, not consumers. You are so eloquent, in all your videos. I love watching your work, your perspective, and all you chose to share!!
Thank you! That's exactly what I have been through... My job as assistant teacher, I have similar experience when I tried to help hearing interpreters but they gets mad or dislike it. Not only that but also, they preferred other aide use speech very well and often involves with their works with students without assisting them. However, head of DHH moved me to high school as one on one who use strong ASL. I'm ok with that.
#truth My grandparents fought to be allowed to join country clubs-that didn’t permit Jewish members until one day they said-hey let’s build our own country club and make it better than theirs. Sometimes that’s the right move. Do it yourself for yourself and stop wasting energy where you are not fully included.
Excellent!!! I especially liked the "abusive parent" (RID) analogy. Miss you! I never tire watching you using this beautiful language. I have always looked up to you...always will. Hope all is well with you.
Martina Bienvenu… As a former deaf advocate, I want to thank you for making your excellent deaf vlog regarding Certificated Deaf Interpreter (CDI) & Registered Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) issue. I learned a lot while enjoyed watching your vlog! :-) :-) :-) Spunky
Wow. Such an insightful vlog. You added to what I already knew about RID. And thanks for validating what I've been telling folks for a decade now. I've always felt that I was alone in the battle. Let us know how we can support NDI. Definitely interested
Yes, MJ, I 100% agree with you. I am from 4th generation black deaf family. I am not very fond of deaf vs. deaf unless I see something very harmful or illegal that can hurt me as black deaf woman. I feel for Dr. Webbs and Mr. Ritchie even though I don't know them as well. I would report the legal assistance. Racial discrimination, workplace bullying, and harassment can harm ALL people, period! I can't tolerate these toxic things that happen on the job. I don't know if RID is the workplace or entertainment. For deaf culture, deaf people always spread the word, talk lots of things I see and have sharp eyes, and sore my eyes. Some of them are unlawful, could have reported police or legal professional or legal assistance. The intervention MUST take place right there.
Wow, thank you for sharing. I was an Educational Interpreter prek-12. I sure miss working. I had to resign due to my hearing declining. I looked into getting my certification for CDI but was told there's a hold due to lack of need. Which doesn't make sense.
Well I never been in RID. Honestly in reality hearing people world would take over our deaf cultures and education. But it’s happening in San Antonio Texas have same problem. Some interpreters would not use ASL and they prefer to use complete sign language in English. I grew up in two languages complete English sign language and ASL. Not everyone is the same. I grew up and graduated high school. There educational program did not work and treated like low education as badly those teachers didn’t teach us in normal deaf classes. It’s sadly teachers didn’t teach us to write, read, and specialty not well communication. Understand that those teachers are hearing.
This just reminds me how I need to work on my receptive skills. COVID put a halt on my ability to join ASL only events and actually have conversations in ASL. So my expressive is Okay, but my receptive? awful =/
This is why I’ve been on the fence about getting certified with RID. They are about money and hearing interpreters not their consumers. Would anyone have suggestions on where else I can become nationally certified?
Right on MJ! One thing I disagree: RID is not about hearing interpreters. RID is about perpetuating RID. It does not help, support or advocate for working interpreters. It is not an organization FOR interpreters. It is a certification body that polices interpreters and has an adversarial role with interpreters. RID holds interpreters ransom, forcing us to pay fees to maintain certification and offers nothing else in exchange. I think RID is obsolete and a failed organization. I believe that state governments should regulate interpreters, just like they do with other professions. The NAD is the oldest consumer organization in the country and as such can lobby state legislatures on behalf of Deaf people. Forming a Deaf Interpreters Association would be great, but there is no Hearing Interpreters Association. The RID is nothing but a self appointed regulatory organization: the foxes guarding the henhouse.
I am even surprised Regan is actually a deaf person. She’s rather use in sim communication and I had no way identify her either deaf or hearing until a friend of mine told me she’s actually deaf and as CDI. Okay, wow!!! It’s all about an attitude. I wish she were hearing then I would dismiss it easily. Sorry to say.
I appreciate the history review and I had the same experience seeing relationships change between the Deaf and hearing members over the years. Also you comparison to the AMA is something I've been saying for years. The AMA is for medical professionals, other organizations and watch dog groups work for patients. AMA cares and is involved in patient rights and law suits for patients, but their main focus is doctors. That is a good thing! Interpreters need a professional organization that focuses on interpreting issues. There should also be Deaf organizations and watchdog groups that focus on Deaf rights and Deaf issues. RID has been trying to do it all, and be everything to everyone. The result is that RID has had very little to offer me as an interpreter for many years. I pay dues to maintain my certification, but otherwise I stay away from RID. I think your suggestion makes sense. Maybe we all would feel we are being heard and supported if we weren't trying to do everything with one organization
Even though RID was established by Boyce Williams and other Deaf professionals, we should just forget about encouraging RID to remember its Deaf roots and incorporate Deaf values within their organization? (Not saying I disagree with what you've shared and suggested, but just wanted to make sure)
I watched whole thing, only thing you missed out that I strongly disagreed with you. RID and NAD has been created so much stressful for many Deaf clients and patients. So, we do have every right to sue you either way sue doctors or sue business or sue anything because you guys continued this kind of attitude and behavior because customers are always right period! We have our rights comes first. Not you!
Many RID interpreters are feeling the same way you are.
I would even say most......

What you are saying, MJ, is why I chose NAD when I wanted to become a certified interpreter. It just made more sense to me that a Deaf organization should have that responsibility.
And exactly why I wish NAD was still providing certification. Very hopeful to see what NDI brings and the shake to the industry that’s needed.

Hello MJ and I agreed with you I support nad
CHAMP!!! Love your beautifully speech!! Thank you MJ!!
Wow. Thank you for sharing your raw feeling about RID.
I love how well you say it. And it's so true! RID is about hearing interpreters, not consumers. You are so eloquent, in all your videos. I love watching your work, your perspective, and all you chose to share!!
I even question about interpreters as well. They just are a CEU depository

Hello MJ. I totally agree with you! Miss your teaching. I completely support NDI. Perhaps we need to start doing fundraising campaigns for NDI?
Thanks for the education of RSC and RID history.
Fully agree with you, amend...
