Craig Charles has the most mischievous smile/smirk with twinkling, impish eyes. He was perfect for Lister. That was the first thing I noticed about this show - Lister’s smirk. Makes you want to smile back even if you are angry.

To create a effective comedy on the skeleton of what in actually a very somber plot is nothing short of pure genius.

My childhood, every Friday night on BBC 2 ! Such a classic.
I storyboarded the episode Body Snatchers for the extra features. So proud to have been asked as I'm a huge fan of the show.
It was really funny when I saw Aliens for the first time and saw Mac McDonald playing pretty much the same character as he does in Red Dwarf.
Lister and Cats exchange on the computer in "Taranshula" is my fav clip. Somehow gets me every time.
It's one of the best jokes for sure.
i never appreciated watching these commentaries as a kid how funny Mac Mcdonald is. He nails the deadpan style of British standup more perfectly than any American I've seen.

This is my absolutely favourite show of all time!! Watched it In Australia every week, my son was brought up on this and loves it still. Brilliant writing, acting and set! Just everything was perfection!! Thank guys, you made us very happy for a long time!!

That opening joke was the PERFECT way to introduce a documentary about Red Dwarf. Couldn't have been done better.
I respect the fact that Grant and Naylor are totally honest about getting the inspiration for Red Dwarf from John Carpenter's 1974 sci-fi comedy film "Dark Star." Obviously the basic premise is VERY similar, with a handful of men stuck together in a spaceship, lonely, bored out of their minds, parsecs from anywhere, keeping themselves entertained by winding each other up.
There's even more to it, like the fact they're blue-collar workers not clean-cut officer material, the way the ship is very "lived-in" and grotty, their bedroom almost a squat; the way one of the crew is a slob, another crewmember is despised by the others, thinks he's better than them, and resents them back; and the way one of the crew is technically dead but can still be interacted with. Heck, some of the attitude from the computer is pretty similar (the "Sorry, guys" and "May I remind you..." stuff), and the way the bomb talks in Dark Star is a lot like the toaster in Red Dwarf - sort of prim and precise, with rather more intelligence than seems strictly necessary for the job it was built to perform.
But from the initial idea that's basically "Dark Star the TV Series" Grant and Naylor developed the characters and situations into something that absolutely stands alone - there's no equivalent of Kryten in Dark Star, and certainly nothing like Future Echoes or Back to Reality.
Best comedy ever , you can never get bored of watching them time and time again. Been watching red dwarf for 30 years plus.

To have spent many years of my life with this. All those memories that we can't remember compared to all those scenes that we do...Lol
I remember school the day after the first episode was first aired. Nobody else had watched it. I was simultaneously annoyed that I couldn’t share my love and delighted that I was the ... coolest. :D
23:25 - The BBC before John Birt became DG in 1992 was a great broadcaster (yes with flaws, I know) but in terms of comedy, Paul is right, the BBC would leave you alone & not interfere with production. They gave you the budget, the production facilities & the dates to do it, left you to it, expecting you to deliver on the given time. Perfect. Sadly all very different in 2020.

@@tilasole3252 Trying to get a comedy show made at the BBC now is utter hell. So many administrative forms and processes to go through, as well as too many managers to deal with. This is why the BBC has very little new comedy in the last decade. Sitcoms are few and far between on the BBC. Also BBC doesn't want to take risks. Satire shows are now dead. Have I Got News For You is the only one left.
@@johnking5174 I have not watched the BBC almost since the US went digital. Had a converter box for a little while, until it broke and refuse to buy another. And I refuse to pay for a streaming service like Brit Box. Plus I have a feeling I'd watch the establish classics, no matter how many times I already have- Are You Being Served, Red Dwarf, Mulberry, Good Neighbors, Spy, IT Crowd, Vicar of Dibley, Moone Boy, etc.
One of the best things about this documentary is that you really appreciate how clever and how much enginuity these people had to work in the practical effects that they did. These days everything just feels crap with lazy CGI.
I completely agree. Lazy CGI can change the whole feel of something nowadays. No real creativity any more. (Friendly FYI, I think you mean ingenuity lol)

Agreed. Since they've had such long breaks between seasons and the movie, I thought it would be the most awesome gag if the guys could get together every few years and just do another movie or a short season. It would then literally be like they're all just bumming around through space, growing old together(since they're actually growing old now). It would be brilliant.

Man, that part with Rimmer's echo repeating the earlier conversation and Lister losing his shit over him not making any sense SLAYS me every time I watch it. It's never NOT funny, consistently hilarious. Future Echoes was definitely some of the most brilliant writing in the series.
To this day I can't see any difference in Chris Barrie's dialogue or positions when he's the echo vs. real life - when I was younger I seriously wondered if they were two separate takes or some very clever camera tricks!
I've NEVER seen Norman Lovett on one of these without him moaning all the time!

@@tilasole3252 I always avoided LotSW....but once I started watching....I couldn't stop. Every generation has it's own nostalgia and an if they did it my way attitude. I guess because I live in Canada, we got both US and British tv. I love both but for different reasons....I'd also add, when I grew up in Vancouver in the 70s and 80s, there were still a lot of Brit expats, here. Because of that, there were so many British programming, plus on PBS, they'd do marathons of Black Adder and Red Dwarf....Oh, and of course...Monty Python...all, brilliant stuff!
Fun fact: The bits of stuff they stick on models to make them seem more detailed (They talk about it around the middle of the video) are called "Greebles". They are an example of "Horror Vaccui" (Which comes from the latin version of "nature abhors a vaccum", and is an old term that means filling art with as much detail as possible)
I’m glad I was fortunate enough to watch PBS as a kid and catch this, along with other British television shows.
I was lucky to watch a couple of recordings. The warm-up man who played the Ronald McDonald clown threw bean bags into the audience and then asked for them to be thrown back to be juggled. One of them hit me in the back of the head. I Pissed myself laughing. Great time watching the crew and cast doing their thing. And then went on to work in the film and tv industry as a medic.
I love Ed Bye. I saw this when I bought it on DVD when it came out, but it got lost in a move, and I kinda forgot the Bodysnatcher Collection existed and how detailed and wonderfully nerdy these DVD documentaries were, so to echo others thanks so much for the upload! :)
Is this on the "Just the Shows" DVD's? I'm looking to getting them on DVD but can't find them other than those and the Blu-ray (which I may get at some point).

Frankly, I'm surprised that has yet to happen! I'd have settled for him being in more episodes of RED DWARF!
He was funny in The Fifth Element.
He also had a part in ‘Aliens’ as the colony boss, the character was similar to Captain Hollister. Seems like a lovely guy-maybe that’s why he gets so much work
Danny may have a different style than the Cat...but he is every bit as cool.

It's amazing how much of the effects are basically just a couple dozen feet of cable and some basic computer chips.

I was lucky to be in the UK in 1987 when this first aired. I was working at a Wimpy in Guildford. Fresh faced 18 year old, fresh out of year 12. From Australia. We were the cat when walking and both Rimmer and Lister whilst talking.
I have converted so many Aussies to Red Dwarf it's quite awesome. My Wife is a huge fan. 22 years of loving the same things. Still watch this show once a week. Season 7 Legion is my favourite episode ever.

@@abigailslade3824 Series 1-6 are the best. 'Rimmerworld', 'Legion' and 'Gunmen of the Apocolypse' are pure genius.
Anything beyond the final series 6 episode ('Out of Time') after Rob and Doug stopped writing together, in my opinion, is just awful.
I vividly remember waiting months for series 7 and then staring at the screen open-mouthed and in shock after watching 'Tikka to Ride' because of how cringe-worthy and terrible it was.
Some of the very late series episodes are 'OK', but nothing compares to series 1-6.
Really enjoyed this, thanks to Everyone who was involved in the making !🤗 How we looked forward to Every episode and Laughed!!

I watched series 1 and 2 on my 5 inch black and white portable TV in my bedroom when I was 13 in 1988.

This past month I've watched every single episode of Red Dwarf and I've loved every season.
Loved this show in 1988 as a 15-year-old and love it today, I had no idea that the cast was progressive because the characters could have been played by any ethnicity, and people didn't care
Yeah uh people cared about the cast, sure you didn't get the kind of intense outrage about it like you would today, but that is because of no social media and just a lack of use of the Internet in general. You had papers back then lampooning red dwarf for being progressive and you had all the usual white supremacist nonsense about white actors being "replaced".
I am hoping that another season will be made because it has been a while now. I think we all need a good laugh in these bad times.
I just want to say that i just LOVED RED DWARF from th very 1st episode. As a huge M.Python & Goons fan, ths new sci fi comedy just hit all th right buttons, its quirky mad humour just got better & betterer, i mean, who could imagine an evolved cat, a narcissistic fashion junkie & as thick as a brick, wth Dwane Dibbley as an alter ego, a liverpuddlian drinks dispenser engineer in hyperspace, & dont get me started on Arnold Rimmer/ Ace " Smoke me a kipper i'll be back in the morning " Rimmer. Wonderful Holly & Creighton too. EVERY SINGLE EPISODE WAS SHEER BLOODY GENIOUS! I'd love it to return, keep us goin thru self isolation at th mo!

Red Dwarf Series 1 recordings had to all be remounted and moved into the autumn of 1987. After the delay due to the strike, Red Dwarf also nearly came to a grounding halt in October 1987 when the Great Storm battered Britain in mid October, right in the middle of recording episodes 4 and 5. Craig Charles remembered the storm well, having to travel up to Manchester and seeing the devastation the storm caused.
I was in London studying during the Grest Storm. I remember it well. Kew Garden trees were uprooted

@@jasonw3414 Sadly, it's mostly because The Cat is there to get laughs and that's pretty much IT! There are times when Red Dwarf relies HEAVILY on the "Rule Of Funny" and this sometimes backfires when it comes to the story-lines and characters! But of course, that is just ANOTHER good reason to bring in more Cat People!
We've seen plenty of cat-heavy episodes in the past, and DJJ has had more than his fair share of the spotlight. From Duane Dibbley to the dancing with the spaceships in S7, to his many personal skills (a few shown within this video, like his rollerskating and juggling), to the episode where he gets to have sex with another of the cat race in the most recent episode...and need I even mention Tongue Tied? How many of the other members of the team have their own album? These are only a FEW spotlight points within the show I can think of where Cat has been forefront or had a front-and-centre position within the show.
If you consider "spotlight" to be whole episodes, has ANYONE really had a spotlight episode that you would call theirs alone? Rimmer had the "Ace Rimmer" thing, but then again Cat had Duane Dibbley...it's much the same thing.
Rimmer got Me2, and a couple of small bits and pieces here and there...He's more underrepresented than the Cat.
Lister's pretty much the "main" character of the show that everything is revolving around, but he's surprisingly underrepresented for being THE main character. It is logical that a fair portion of the show will revolve around him, the last man in the universe...ultimately it all returns back to him before moving on in another direction, but he gets less than a fair portion of the spotlight...not that I think CC would complain, he gets enough spotlight.
And Holly/Hollie...apart from a certain couple of episodes like Queeg ("April, May, June, July AND August fools!") and White Hole, the character is relegated to background. He had to badger the production staff in S1 (as you hear in this video) just to get seen rather than be just a voiceover.
And you think the CAT needs more storyline?
I found Lister and Cat's humour too forced. Kryten and Rimmer's flowed smoothly

I love these older shows and how creative they had to be to make things work on set. Now its just all CGI but it never seems as convincing to me.
I loved the first episode I watched it the day it aired and have rewatched it many times.
I gotta say love to Norman, he'll always be the true Holly.

CD St he is still friends though with the other castmates, and he’s a lot less insufferable now than he was at the time they filmed the first season/series. He’s still lovable though.

Rob by the end of series 6 was getting tired of being tired up with Red Dwarf and wanted to do other work. Doug took it as a bit of a betrayal, but they still talked to each other from time to time, just never worked together since.

first show busted me up, Loved it & all after it. Don't doubt yourselves, you were a brilliant team. & yes it was hilarious from the git go. The actors... unbeatable all of them perfect, & still funny in what I'll call their best bits, showing humanity. the writers directors my gods... even the crappy sets; they were funny, because of what they were & what they got away with, you don't find that comedy gold on any just starting.

The 1987 BBC Electricians Strike started on January 5th 1987. This affected hundreds of technical staff at the BBC premises across the country, including BBC North West which would be recording Red Dwarf. The strike ended on February 28th 1987 but Red Dwarf would not kick off recording until September 1987.
