Some good thrash there. It was so good back then.
I remember leaving from Stoke-on-Trent in 1968,my only other time was in 1971,never been back since then
Takes me back worked on pway until 94
my hometown station - oh how its changed - some truly classic traction - great vid
This brings back memories - being from Crewe would often pass through Stoke when out and about chasing haulage. Steel and coal trains long gone now. I remember once Cockshute depot closed they’d lineup locos in the other bay platform - often have 4 or 5 pairs of 20s there. Great stuff.
Thanks for your memories.....i imagine Stoke is faily quiet now unless freight is on diversion?....
Brilliant video, brings back many happy memories when my dad worked at Stoke station and i was a nipper
same for me, I was using the train on a weekly basis to get to and from work at this time.
Thanks for sharing...really enjoyed this, there are not many videos of Stoke on Trent.great quality for 1990
Thank you. I went there for a bit of freight action, and was not disappointed. And of course just about everything i filmed is now history! The camera i used took full sized E180 VHS tapes so i kept the quality up unlike systems with small tapes that had to be copied over to VHS. Transfering to DVD in later years on a high definition setting kept the sharp pictures. You do loose a bit of quality uploading to CZcams but it still looks good for its age.
Fascinating video. I was a student in Stoke at that time, mainly living a stones throw from the station, had spells commuting to/from Longport 88/89, Man Pic 91, with other ad hoc trips to Stafford, Crewe, Euston etc etc. The sounds really being it back. I hadn’t remembered the coal trains at all, steel to/from? Shelton was common through the station. There were also plenty of staff and it reminded me of the ‘porters larking’ line from a poem at school. There was a Nestles chocolate vending machine on pl. 2. Happy times.
I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Not sure where the coal was going to/from though..... The steel came from Teeside and i beleve headed to South Wales....
I was a student until 2 years ago, its interesting that a lot of the surrounding area looks the same and the parts were like before they were changed like the carpark.
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus the coal might have been going to Meaford Power Station which was still operating at the time. Possibly coming from Barrow.
Wow, that brings back some memories! You kind of take things for granted at the time, but of course, all that is now history.
Thanks for sharing
Superb video..... my god, those double headed syphons and pairs of choppers.... we didn't realise how lucky we were in those days ! Just great, thanks for posting.
You're welcome! I have plenty more classic vids like this to upload, as well as quite a few up already inc one with a pair of 25s......
i remember a guy in the 80's all he did all day was bash those 304 EMU's out of Man Pic all day long his nickname was Mr Dong :D
Very desperate.....almost as keen as a train driver i used to work with....he's had haulage on just about every train in the country from the late 70s onwards.......(no names but Mr F will give some a clue....)
A great great fantastic video. Really enjoyed watching it. Many thanks from chris 👍
My pleasure! I do have a lot more from the past....plus more to come from taday's scene, happy viewing!
Lovely video!
This is pretty much how I remember Stoke from when I first visited in the (very) late 1990s- I believe it’s changed quite a bit since then, with the centre through road being lifted for one thing. Was that 310 on the Stoke-Stafford local? I travelled on it just before it was finished up, and it was down to a 153 by then ( I was pretty much the only passenger on it) so 4 coaches seems like over-provision indeed! I had no idea that Mark 1s other than BGs survived this late on the WCML. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely footage, all smelly dreadful pendos and Voyagers now. Immaculate infrastructure too, I expect there is Buddleia galore there now, Network Rail's trademark in neglect.
Agree with you , the whole system is like a jungle , with sacks of ballast , safety barriers , lengths of rail , can,t clear up after themselves , look on any vid and it,s the same ,they,ll say we are helping wildlife , bollocks , all about saving money , disgrace !!!
david beckett well said David, absolute disgrace, penny pinching. The railway infrastructure in the Republic of Ireland is immaculate, just like it used to be here.
Centre Straight through track is now.....gone.!
Yes, i was there last November and it looked very sterile now with not much action.....
Thanks for posting. Stoke was my home town and I spent many an hour travelling too and from there, and just watching the trains. Great times.
Lots of Class 20s still going then. 37518 which of course is still with us today, clagging a bit there.
Yes, i seem to recall that one is still going. Not sure if it's preserved or running for the Rail Operations Group (or similar).
Thank you for posting this great video. Born and raised in North Staffs I've boarded and alighted trains at Stoke station many times over the years. Childhood holidays to Devon, trips to see relatives in London, teenage days out to Manchester and Birmingham to go record shopping, and the period shown here was just before my student days started and the regular journeys to and from Leeds for university. And of course coming back to watch Stoke City! Happy days.
Good video. No dvt's. Proper trains.
9 minutes. A pair of 20's getting away.froma signal stop. What more could you want.
Great video, though’s 20s sound. sweet as I remember. What camcorder were you using back then? 👍
I've never had a cam-corder! I first used cine, then in 1985 I brought a Panasonic M1 vid camera that took E180 VHS tapes. No need to transfer so kept the quality up.
@@magicdave93 Thank you, keep watching, there will be lots more to come!
Why is there a clip of a underground train at end of stoke on Trent and Carlisle videos,?
The clip is added to the end of all my videos in order to put up the end cards and not obscure the end of the actual video i upload. The reason it's a shot of a train leaving a station is it's 'the parting shot' at the very end of each vid.
Skoda at 4:54
I really don’t understand why they removed the centre track from the station.
To save money! There are a lot less freight trains around now so the need for through lines diminishes.
What was the train with all the Mark Is around 12.00?
From Plymouth most likely. Branson wouldn't remember all that with his poxy toy voyagers.
It’s a Manchester-Euston service. Intercity WCML pool lost a number of Mk3 coaches in the Colwich accident and were forced to make up the shortfall by transferring a rake of refurbished Mk1 vehicles from the MML. They normally worked the lowest-tier expresses such as Holyhead and Aberystwyth/Pwllheli in the summer, but here have clearly turned up in a rake working a Manchester diagram. They were never able to work push-pull and the shrinkage of IC routes in the early 1990s allowed their withdrawal.
310109? Didn't think they went upto that number..
When they ran between London and the West Midlands they were 4 coaches. After being replaced they took a coach out and refurbished & renumbered them.
That's stoke jan/90
Great video and the coal rakes and 37s are iconic of that era.
