Liam's Parents Feel Supported by Shriners Children's Care Team

Liam is an athlete who was born with myelomeningocele, a serious form of spina bifida. It’s where the spinal column does not develop and close in a typical manner early in fetal development. Liam doesn’t have feeling in his legs, from the knee down. While he can walk with crutches, it takes great effort and can leave him winded (he’s having to rely on his upper body strength). Liam is a competitive basketball player and has recently taken an interest in practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Practitioners of this art spend most of their time rolling on the ground, working to successfully overtake an opponent through learned tactics. The movement is called “ground-rolling”. As you can imagine, this type of movement makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu an obvious fit for Liam. Liam’s goal? To become stronger and more experienced in fighting. Liam's family always finds time to give back to the mission - and help other kids who will need the hospital in the future.
