  • Flying Fijians vs British Baabaas in October 1970 at Gosforth. An historic rugby match that exhibited the unorthodox and razzle dazzle style of the Flying Fijians against the more structured and highly fancied Baabaas.The Flying Fijians had some great household names back in the Islands and the Baabaas had nine players that toured NZ with the mighty British Lions seven months later after this match. The spirited Flying Fijians lit the field up in the second half with their innate and out-of-the-box open support play that had the entire crowd off their seats in a mesmerising performance. Running rugby with magical flow and in the words of the great Australian modern day sports poet, Rupert McCall "The way the game was meant to be"

    I was there! We went as a school rugby team and it was the most amazing game I had ever seen. As a second row I tried to replicate what I had seen the Fijian second rows do at school practice the following week and was promptly dropped from the team!

      Fiji can beat any tier one nation team, if they stick to their style of rugby (open play).The Europeans notice their potential back then during Joe Levulas era 1939 onwards.And they brought in the structure rugby to close/box these kind of flairs down.Because they know if they won't come up with the structure style of rugby. They won't win any match against teams like Fiji..

    Even by today's standards Fiji were right off the scale against a Lions strength Barbarians. This result shook the rugby world to the core. The old cosy club did not want rugby to go down this route, they couldn't compete, and no effort whatsoever was made to incorporate Fiji into the world game. The lawmakers also went into overdrive to ensure sides with a big pack and especially front five could dominate the game. Great shame, Just think how rugby might have been developed if these guys had been invited to the party straight after this!

      Agree the old farts fucked the development of Rugby up and let Soccer take over and then the introduction of Rugby League also look at Scotland it's only played outside private schools in the Borders yet another country handed to Soccer because of the narrow minded elitism old boys network.

    What caught my eye here was the unusual rugby stadium, seems very developed for what must have been an amateur club
    in 1970.
    Does it still exist, is it still the home of Garforth RFC or maybe it is a housing estate?

    • @bhfilmmaking
      @bhfilmmaking Před 4 lety +1

      I believe the title says Gosforth. I currently play for Gosforth RFC in Newcastle Upon Tyne however, there has been multiple site changes since 1970 and seeing as I only began playing nearly 2 years ago my memory can't really trace back to a time before I was born. Despite this I've done a little research into my club and I think this is an old stadium that used to be in Gosforth but has since been demolished as I also live in Gosforth and the closest thing to a stadium is Newcastle Racecourse with the closest stadiums in the area being Kingston Park and St James' Park. I also think that this stadium was never a site of Gosforth RFC.

      Barry John, my rugby master at school, might well have made a difference, for I have never seen anyone on a rugby pitch read a game so intuitively, stand back a bit deep in his own half, a move that gave him space and time to kick for touch against an oncoming, marauding team that was promptly halted in its tracks. John's ability to kick long, deadly aimed kicks that landed just inside the touchline has never been matched, a 50-60 yds gain against the flow of the game. In my less-than-humble opinion, the greatest fly-half of all time...

      @@sailasavakalala4531 Vinaka vakalevu Sai. It's thrill to watch this kind of entertaining rugby that the Fijians had exhibited earlier in the game worldover before the corporate rugby powers riddled the game with rules that not only destroy the love of rugby but gifted opportunities for other sports to dominate. Nevertheless Fiji still suffer from this changing laws, I would only hope the 7s code is not the emerging victim. Once again thank you for identifying these Flying Fijians as they are well known across the world. I watched most of these boys at Buckest Park, Suva in 1977 when they beat the British Lions.
