It was a dirty war and the PIRA did some horrific things but if you threat a peoples so badly. If you deny them a fair democracy and deny them the civil rights which are afforded to the 'other side'...what do think is going to happen?!?

I agree totally. The IRA made numerous military mistakes leading to the deaths of a lot of innocent people. Remember this these same people who joined the Struggle were average people who literally disregard by a state where they lived in and heart renchingly forgotten about by the country to the south who they loved and wanted to to be so much a part of after being divided by the British. They took on the military might of the invader with no military wisdom at the time.

I was on vacation in Ireland about 15 years ago & the hotel in Killarney where we stayed was next door to one hosting the Wolfe Tones.
My brother & I went & sat down at a table. A young family was on vacation from Belfast & asked if the seats next to us were taken & if they could sit? Of course! We said.
They were very polite, funny & warm people with great kids.
The show started & about halfway through the Tones said that there was a special guest in the audience & the next song, is dedicated to him. At this, the man got obviously uncomfortable & ended up leaving partway through the song.
His wife then leaned over apologetically for her husband leaving like that. Turns out he was the “guest” & was Joe McDonnell’s cousin.
He returned later & apologized!! We all ended up having a great night!

This song always gives me goose bumps. It captures what the conflict in N. Ireland was like. I live and grew up in N. Ireland throughout the conflict. It was normal to hear bombs go off and to hear gun shots nearby. As an 8yr old child, I'd walk to my school and British soldiers would point their rifles right at me, trailing me as I walked by.... Imagine doing that to a child? And they dare to call us terrorists?
The lyrics in the song say "I hope to God my life was not in vain".... Well, that's debatable. The British still own N. Ireland. Sinn Fein have sold out to the globalists and we still don't have a workable government.

I'd like to comment..... The Hunger Strike came about because of Republican prisoners who were fighting a War against the British invaders wanting political status. The British typically wanted to control the world media and so denied them this so as to formulate options that they were only a bunch of upstarts, regular social prisoners, more or less devalue their cause .... What isn't well known is that in Ireland itself successive governments turned a blind eye to the atrocities being carried out by British and unionist forces on the then minority Catholic population. Political parties, Sinn Fein etc were literally BANNED on Irish TV.... The average Irish person in the south of the country were fed a watered down version of events, sometimes to the point of giving people the impression those Northern republicans are always creating trouble....We understand completely what false media does... we've been victims of it for years

Joe is at rest he will return when the time is right maybe he is reborn already but he may have hunger issues. I am not being funny. I have being visited by Pasty O'Hara he said the boys were resting. They are all ok. They gave their lives for their country and they will live on and on after they died they will never be forgotten. I came into Canada as this was happening but I was dealing with my own pain. I am a veteran nurse; who worked the battlegrounds in Belfast. I studied with the first nations medicine keepers and they explained to me that we are all spirit having an earth a human experience. I have stood three big stones in my orchard to remember these brothers who hungered for justice. Oh the love the love the love Joe named for the father of Jesus. I intend to place ten but it takes time. I place three one fell down. I was in ceremony when they came in. I was on a vision quest and I had not eaten for days. Pasty came in told me to go eat that I had always seen things not to worry said the boys were resting . He said eat for us. Who wrote this song I want to sing it this evening at open mic but not sure I can hold the tune

OMG, your description is completely wrong. You clearly know nothing of Irish history and specifically of more recent times over 30 years up to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. There was no such thing as a conflict between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The conflict was against the partition of Ireland by the British government in 1921 and against British occupation in the north with the ultimate objective of a re-united Ireland. The song is about one of the republican paramilitary prisoners who went on a hunger strike in 1981 in protest at having their ‘special category status’ removed. 10 died, including Joe McDonnell. Respectfully suggest you correct your erroneous description.
