10 TIPS FOR A TIDY HOME
Clean for 20 minutes a day - Set 20 minutes aside each day to clean instead of doing a few hours on your precious weekends. Play some music or a podcast to make the time go even faster.
Keep your cleaning tools organised - keeping your cleaning tools and products all together makes it really easy to clean on the run.
Create daily habits - make certain tasks a habit so you don't have to think twice before doing them. Don't procrastinate over jobs like making your bed first thing in the morning, emptying the dishwasher, whipping over the floor under the breakfast bench with the vacuum - just do it.
Create a drop zone - this is the one place you put things that need to leave the house so you never forget them. I use a drawer situated at my front door and it's where I keep my keys and my handbag so I never forget to look in there before I leave the house.
Start a donate box - this is a box that you'll use to place all sorts of things you no longer need but are too good to be thrown out. Once the box is full you can take it to your nearest charity store for donation.
Create systems for problem areas - if you often find you can't seem to keep one area of your house tidy it's a sign you need to create s system for that area or a home for some of the items that are causing clutter.
Everything needs a home - clutter accumulates if items you own don't have a dedicated home. If you want to maintain a tidy, organised home then you need to have a place for everything so it's easy to put things away.
Invest in the right tools - the right tools really do take the hard work out of cleaning. They do a great job and make the experience as pleasant as possible.
Use the one touch rule - once you pick something up be sure to deal with it accordingly. Don't procrastinate and put something down (where it doesn't belong). If you're touching something be sure to deal with it so you don't have to come back to this task.
Quick tidy before bed - before lights out put everything back in order as much as possible so you can start your day in an orderly manner.

just realized 3 years ago I watched this video for the first time. watched it again today and noticed that I have been doing your amazing tips ever since and have a clean and tidy home thanks to your guidance, without a lot of effort each day. i appreciate you sharing this wisdom. 💗
Great tips, thanks! A couple tips from me: when you mop or vacuum, do it in a straight line, once forward, then straight back. Less time going over a section multiple times and missing certain spots. Plus, it makes for a one way "nap" in the carpet. Second, if you live with others, get them involved! I have 4 kids. We make clean up fun by MY positive attitude and music by cleaning up to a rotation of everyone's favorite song. We also change it up by calling it, "5 minutes to make a difference." "Many hands makes light work"
Also, thanks for the link to the labeled cloths!!! Brilliant!!
My tip is, that each week on the day of garbage pick up, I go through my frig and toss out left overs & such. So helpful also with keeping everything tidy. Loved all 10 of your tips - awesome!
Great tip! Thanks for sharing :)
I love how everything is black and white, including your dog. Great tips!
Thank you and the dog matching our decor was just a happy coincidence LOL :)
I've seen a lot of people recommending the 'set a timer for x minutes' tip - i'm going to give that a try! I'm such a lazy scruffbag but at the same time totally OCD about things looking nice which is a never-ending inner-battle which either results in lazy winning and things piling up everywhere, or ocd winning and days lost to meticulous cleaning, intensive decluttering, reorganising and making everything look perfect and shiny. Your home is beautifully balanced and pure goals!! xx
gingerandpippin ahh that’s so funny - I think I’m very much like you - part scruffbag part OCD. Maybe that’s why the 20 mins a day works for me. Sounds like you should def give it a try. Good luck 😉
I am like this. Either end of the spectrum with no in between 😀 all organized or clean or not at all
Describes me perfectly.
One mantra I've made for myself is, "it doesn't have to be perfect to be done." Just doing something is better than not at all.
20 minutes of cleaning and tidying per day...great idea!
Bonobo3D thx 👍🏻
I love that your dog is always in your videos.. And that she is not afraid of your vacuum. I am definitely going to create a"zone" for the school paperwork. Great tip!!!!
Samantha Bean thank you 🙏🏼 we have two sons and call our dog our number one son 🙊 he’s an ex-racing greyhound and a bit snuggle monster. We all love him to bits 😍 thx so much for taking the time to comment - it means a lot 👍🏻
My home used to be tidy all the time ... that is until a man moved in and now we have 3 kids under 5! My life is about cleaning a l l the t i m e!
Mybagoftheday oh yes I feel
your pain. My boys are older now and that def makes keeping things tidy do much easier.
Mybagoftheday 😪😪😪 you have my sympathy! I am serious the kids can be trained if you make a game out of it. The man .... will take some time. Go to him in a loving unstressed, non frustrated tone and let him know that you as parents need to set a cleanup example for the little ones. Remember Mary Poppins? It won’t be that magical, but if you ask them whose faster at cleaning up, I bet you get a little healthy competition going. Best of luck!
@@Thestyleinsider. I worked in the food industry for 6 years. From washing dishes to managing a pizza restaurant. I escaped the trade but still keep my home almost normal. Occasionally I just say "screw it" and hide in my studio for a week. Fire up my computers, check the outside world, again say "screw it", and work with my camera gear.
The right tools... Best advice ever! Got a new vacuum...world of difference
Yep the right tools really do take the hard work out of it and dare I say can even make it enjoyable LOL :)
I live by the 20 minutes a day rule! Even for bigger jobs which will take longer than 20 minutes, getting started is always the hardest part, so setting that timer really helps.
Yes it definitely works for me too :)
watching your videos makes me feel so relaxed, I just felt a panic attack coming on, started watching this video with your lovely smiley face and suddenly feel calmer
Oh that's made my day gorgeous girl - I'm so happy I could help make you feel better :)
cleaning cloths look so clean, that it s difficult to imagine you have been cleaning with them :). this is the best minimalist series I have seen. thank you. very helpful.
Excellent advice, thank you. For super fast windows cleaning (and most surfaces in no time flat) take hand towels dampened in the spin cycle of the washer - wipe off the dirt FIRST before using another clean (damp) one with a squirt of Windex. Windows will be squeaky clean with no streaks. Do your whole house with 10-20 towels then pop them in the washer for next time.
Oh I must try this - thanks for sharing :)
Great video. enjoyed it a lot. I am usually very tired at bed time so I have become accustomed to picking up stuff first thing in the morning and I cannot do anything else until everything is in its proper place daily. It has become such a habit that I do not even realize I am doing it.
Brilliant vid. Loved three things in particular about it:
1. The actual vid
2. Not chasing the dog off the bed, then giving him alil comfort snuggle after
3. Sneaky pack of cards against humanity I think I spotted in that drawer. 😜
Bonus fourth: your podcast playlist
😁
LOL :) Great spotting there re the card game (my fave) and thanks for your kind words. :)
Oh and yep I clearly don't have a no dog on the bed rule in our house LOL :)
The Style Insider Life Goal: cuddle ALL the dogs.
You're clearly my kinda sista. We should go for cocktails if we ever find ourselves in the same hemisphere at the same time!
Chin, chin till then 🍸🍸
You're on girl! And yes same life goal LOL :)
Shelley's Cloud lol
Great Video: Point 10 is the best thing I have found to do, then when you get up there is no mess to clean before you start your day. Also good habit for children to adopt. It shouldn't be left to the wife/mother to be responsible for keeping the house tidy.
Yes it's often the last thing you feel like doing at the end of the day but is a game-changer getting up to a clean and tidy house right?
These were actually really helpfull. I've watched so many home organization and cleaning tips videos but this actually gave some really good and usable tips!
Mara B yay! I’m so pleased you found this valuable 👍🏻
I’ve watch a lot of videos on tidying the house. I must say you’ve brought up some really great and unique tips! Very motivational! Thank you
Ahhh thx so much - glad you enjoyed my video 👍🏻
I use most of these tips out of necessity since an untidy or unclean home creates a lot of stress for me. I even created nicknames and acronyms for each of my tips. I just found you and now I am a new subscriber!
Oh that sounds cool! I'd love to hear what those acronyms are :)
Love that this video was short and to the point! Your tips are easy to follow and are tasks that make a big impact. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for taking the time to comment - I'm thrilled you enjoyed my video :)
I like cotton terry “bar mops” for general cleaning, but the texture is coarse for dusting. For dusting, I like cut-up old cotton fine items like knit t-shirts and sleepwear, cotton flannel is good, too. I keep these in separate piles, and it’s easy to tell the difference. I also like to have some old big towels, like worn bath and beach towels. These are great for bigger jobs like placing under windows being cleaned (I use the window scrubber and squeegee method, not the glass-spray and paper-towel method, which leaves lots of streaks, my pro window cleaning kit was a small, but great, investment ). Thanks for the tips!❤
Love the idea of a "Paper Drawer". I will definitely designate one for me & one for him!
It makes such a difference because paper seems to be one of those things that builds up and up :)
that mop is revolutional!!! i have removeable wipes that attach to the bottom of the mop (that i buy at the 100 yen shop). put it on, whip around then throw away. keeps my Japanese cypress floors shiny. you have inspired me to do it more often...i am going to start with 5 mins everyday.
Oh cool! Love the sound of the disposable wipes - I have to wash mine :)
all these tips are great and I just want to say that the way you treat your dog absolutely got my heart
Ah thank you - yes we love our boy to bits :)
I love the part about tidying up before bed. I love to do that, because I love to come downstairs to a tidy kitchen and living room.
Yes me too it makes all the difference right?
Absolutely, it's a very nice thing to wake up to. And I do understand (from previous emails) all the misconceptions folks harbor about minimalism. Sometimes it can feel as though some have "lost the plot" so to speak. Minimalism is about intentional living, not having exactly 33 items of clothing or only 4 forks... etc... because these numbers hold no value by themselves, what does, is what drives the need to keep them. Can you tell I've been at this for some time? Ha! :)
I love seeing others with similar habits as my own. You mentioned a few other tips i haven't tried yet, thank you.
Me too :) So glad you found a few new ones too :)
Love the idea of the drop zone... Will clean out a drawer today ... my handbag is usually dumped on my bedroom floor .🤗🌞
Absolutely love your beautiful home, it is so calm and peaceful! I have been binge watching decluttering videos and have ordered my cordless vacuum :) Going to watch some more of your videos now xx
Jacqui Penny ahhh that’s so kind of you to say so - thank you 🙏🏼
Wow-love your home. Beautiful! Thx for tips!
Best tip, the drop zone, starting that tomorrow. Tks!!
Oh yes creating a drop zone is such a game-changer! Thanks for watching :)
Wonderful home and tips. Inspired me to change furniture and vacuum cleaner soon. White looks so clean!
I have a three-story house, each floor has a bathroom, so I keep a set of bathroom cleaning supplies and tools in each. I also have two vacuums, one on each of the lower floors. The top floor has only a guest bedroom and bathroom, so doesn’t need cleaning as much. The second story vacuum does need to be lugged up there, but I hire someone to do all the heavy cleaning every two weeks. I’ve had serious back trouble since childhood and have never been able to do all the cleaning myself. Ironically, I love house cleaning! I keep my main living areas tidy, but my garage and sewing/storage room do get junked up fairly fast. I have no cupboards or closets in my tiny Victorian cottage, so the bulkier cleaning things have to be squeezed into a closet I added to my laundry area. Being tidy makes cleaning so much easier and faster. I’m constantly decluttering, especially paper clutter, which adds up fast.
"thank you for making my bed mum!" woof!
Yep that's exactly what he would have been saying I reckon LOL :)
In the country where I grew up we had to living maids in my household but on the weekends when they were off, I remembered my mom diving the home shores between my sibling and me and will do the upstairs and the other the first floor. We were taught good habits from childhood and today I give thanks for them but breaking the cleaning shores makes them a lot easier and. It get tired at the end of the day 😉
I am the designated cleaner in my house hold and I absolutely hate a messy home truly think it decreases my mood. I loved your tips!
Great tips...thanks! Love the 20 minute a day tip, those great cleaning cloths and that VAC! Going to get those, just what I'm looking for!
Thank you and yep having the right tools for the job definitely makes life a whole lot easier :)
LOVED THIS!!! SO HELPFUL - THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Liorasmakeuploves52 yay! So pleased you liked it 👍🏻
great video! just a tip my dad told me when i made a video is that in some parts of ur vid u show mail and bills in slow motion and people could stop it and zoom in to read it, so just be carful! x
Oh yes thanks so much for your message. I do make sure I show stuff that really isn't important and doesn't include any personal info but thank you so much for your concern - I really appreciate it :)
I love all of these tips! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Wonderful! Loved these tips and also seeing your beautiful furbaby too. Our furbaby is the centre of our home and it's lovely to see another furbaby is loved just as much. I especially liked the 20 mins cleaning each day tip, my own favourite rule for myself is to start each morning with a load of laundry. It saves having piles of laundry build up. Thank you for sharing, I've subbed and can't wait to see your next video, have a great week, hugs x
Thank you for leaving such a lovely comment. Yes our "fur baby" is the centre of our home too. In fact we have two sons and always refer to our greyhound as our favourite son - eek! :)
:) I love that!! I keep saying that it's taken Jade, our staffie cross furbaby, a while but she's almost gotten us trained how she wants us :) I've taken your advice and yesterday treated myself to a new stick vacuum that changes into a hand held vacuum. It means my large upright vacuum can stay upstairs and the new one will be used downstairs. No more having to bring the heavy Hoover downstairs. I also bought one of those spray mops too. Took me a while to find one but it'll be fab not having to use a mop bucket. Thank you so, so much Leonie, you've made my morning cleaning so much easier, sending heaps of huggles for you and furbaby huggles for Chesta too x
Rosies Cottage 🙏🏼
everything's black and white and minimal...wonderful!!!
Thank you :)
I really really love clean & organized ppl 👌 😍
Your house is like a dream come through, your aesthetic is amazing!
Thank you :)
love your dog!!!! and as a mother of four and a dog, I really enjoy our tipps! I do a lot already but there are some ideas I will practice now!
Thanks for watching and I'm so glad you discovered a few new tips :)
love your tips and surprisingly I'm already doing them all, Yay!
Oh that's great to hear Jennie :)
i love the idea of a drop box and donate box!
The drop zone is a game changer - just makes life so much easier. Means you don't forget anything when you're on your way out and you never lose your keys either :)
Drop zone! Love it!
Yep I find it super handy having a drop zone :)
Butterfly Queen 7
My big tip is sweeping at the end of the day. I may do it earlier if need be, but I always do so again before I get ready for bed. This way I know nothing is on the floor that shouldn't be at night in case I need to go to bathroom or an emergency happens. It gives me peace of mind and makes it easier to get to sleep and have a good night's sleep.
you shouldn't make your bed right after getting up. It needs fresh air and needs to cool down & get dry. Otherwise those pesky 8-legged bugs (mite) will procreate like crazy because they love warm and sweaty bed sheets and mattresses. Making your bed right away is unhygienic.
Oh that's interesting - I'd never actually thought of that but it really does make a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you for sharing that that's what I really needed to hear because I've been going through it with my house clutter clutter clutter thank you
Great tips. I definitely need to implement the one touch rule.
Thank you and yes the one touch rule makes a huge difference to me - saves a lot of double handling :)
Thank you for helpful tips. Work smarter 👍🏼
Such incredible tips! They have really helped me out. Thank you so much!

40bdg yep my drop zone is a lifesaver 👍🏻
Same here.. Drop zone, charity boxes, paper area.. Will start now itself
I'm a new subscriber, and I am obsessed! Thank you for such quality content! 💖💖💖
Ah thank you for such a lovely comment - you've made my day :)
Hats off to the one-touch rule! This is the cure to laziness!
Ching Javellonar it definitely makes life easier and saves a lot of time double-handling 👍🏻
Very good video. I like learning new things that actually work
Loved these tips! So helpful and realistic. Thanks!
Thank you so much. So pleased you found them helpful :)
OMG this was sososos helpful. I had no idea of any of thissss
I love the drop done, too, especially the way it's handy but stuff is still out of sight
Yes totally 🙌🏼
I love that spray mop!
:)
These are really good tips! Thank you for sharing them 💕
Yay! So glad you found them helpful :)
I have always been a "20 mins a day" cleaning girl - people always wondered how I kept my home so tidy all the time...now I realize that is one of my best habits.
You mentioned a problem area....My husband LOL....we made one corner of the living room his...with his "organized" clutter and its not too bad honestly....I just keep a small basket on the counter by the front door for keys pens a note pad....a hanging rack by the door for sweaters and my 1 purse and dog leashes (2)...all mail gets opned by the mail box and anything with no info gets put in their recycle bin there and other papers get shredded immediately if not needed....I always clean as i go....with a pup home gets swept daily mopped everyother day....but wipe downs are daily....cooking we clean as we go....or at least my huni is trying to adapt LOL
Twenty minutes a day. I’ll try doing that. I’m not a slob granted I clean for a living, lol. Thank you.
I love your scandy very open clean space!!
Thank you :)
Love you decor,
And loved the tips... I personally follow the one touch rule and it does make my life easier
Thank you so much and yes double handling is always such a time waster right?
Amazing how these 10 simple tips can change a life! I"m living proof. Thank you, Style Insider. Thank you!
Yay! That's great news :)
@@Thestyleinsider. I owe it to you. By the way, I'm 70, so I wish I had your advice about 50 years ago. BUT, better late than never! :) ♥
Delicious tips! I had to pause after the 3rd one and go do it, so one tip at a time, it's done!
Yay! That's SO cool. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment :)
Hi Leonie. Thanks for your advice. You look lovely.
Thank you!
Great tips. Thank you.
Must say I EEEEEEEEPPPPP’d when I saw the hound!! I’m a fellow hound owner too so it was super exciting xxx
EEEEEEEEPPPPPP that's so exciting. How long have you had your hound for? We've had our boy for two years and we all absolutely adore him. Greyhounds are the best right?
All of these tips were brilliant! Thank you!
Yay! Thanks so much - so glad you found them helpful :)
LOVED this video! ❤️
tialynnhitchcock thank you so much 😊
I love it!!!!
Love the tips! Can’t wait to try them out :)
Huiying Koh yay
LOVE THIS VIDEO !!!
That's great to hear Cynthia - yay!
i wanna live in your house!! definitely think i should invest in a cordless vacuum cleaner... i vacuum much less often than i should and all because i can't be bothered to get the heavy thing out of the closet and drag it around everywhere.. ok, i'm motivated. gonna clean my kitchen up :)
Yep that's why I ended up with a cordless! The other vacuums are too big and cumbersome and you never end up getting them out. When you have a small handheld one you can pull it out anytime and you never have to do a big vacuum. Definitely works for me. Thanks for watching :)
I also loved the idea of dusting with the vacuum! That’s gold!
@@Thestyleinsider. and i have a closet full of mops broom so full its danger to open.
great! I liked the drop zone idea and a donate box.
white dove thanks so much - both of those ideas have been game-changers for me 👍🏻
What an awesome video. Good job. Again, thank you.
Thank for watching and I'm pleased you enjoyed it :)
Thankx so much!!! Gr8 tips!!!
Yay! So pleased you liked them :)
love your home decor.
Ahh thank you :)
Best video u can see before 2019
Loved it thanks so much for sharing🤗
Yay! So pleased you enjoyed it :)
Really loved these tips!!!
Awesome! Thank you :)
Great video, lots of excellent tips, both directly and indirectly. Added to favorites.
Thank you so much :)
Loved this. Great inspiration. Will start cleaning right now and remember your tips to improve the routine. Regards from Germany....
Yay!
It’s so nice to see other folks who have the same habits I do... with my husband and teen did as well. 🤪
Yay!
Great tips! Great house too😍
I love the drop zone, too. Need one large enough for my Yorkie, though. Lol.
Lol I’d need one big enough to fit my greyhound 🙊😂
Did nobody else feel exhausted after watching this? Or question why it’s always the mums or female of the house who do the 20 minutes in the morning and the last thing at night clean up? Why don’t we have tips that show how the other people (including little people) in the household can take responsibility of the household? Unfortunately I don’t think too many men would be thrilled with the idea of getting up early and setting a timer to tidy up every day? We haven’t come that far since the 50s and 60s then have we?
laflynn2 my husband does just as much as me around the house and my sons also have chores they do. They just didn’t want to be in the video 👍🏻
My job doesn’t allow me to do 20 minutes of cleaning everyday. Sometimes my home is a mess.
Maybe I need to find myself a husband so he can take care of the household.
If the boys had to clean up those crumbs after their breakfast, they'd be a lot more careful not to drop them in the first place. I really think children should do chores. It makes them more responsible.
laflynn2 we clean for ourselves, that is why. Truth is, I know more tidy men than women. Let’s keep the man hating for the dark net. :)
Ease up soldier. I’m a bloke and just watched this 😜
Love your tips. I have more than 1 reason why when I change clothes, I put them away where they belong. If I drop them on my bed, they might get cat fur on them. Plus, like you said that doing it right away , you don't have to take care of it later.
Loved this! The sneaky look through your house was more entertaining than the tips ;) what a beautiful home x
Oh thank you that's very kind of you to say so :)
LOVE IT !
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video :)
Your house is gorgeous! Thanks for the advice.
Thank you that’s very kind of you to say 👍🏻
