  • Firstly a big thanks to Steve Harrison for finding this, he’s a top diagnostics tech and used by the trade in the Reading area , which is why it’s taken 3 weeks to get him to fit us in. This is a perfect example of not relying just on a multi meter to test with. We had 12volts and continuity from the battery to the ecu relay but it was HR ( high resistance ) and couldn’t pass any current when it was loaded with a test bulb it wouldn’t light. The fuse was blown but still allowing a voltage across. When I opened the fuse it was hanging on by a hair’s breadth on one end, hence no current.flow. The CAN was retested from the OBD port on pin 6 and 14 and the 60ohm terminal resistance was confirmed, if one of the CAN wires were disconnected we would have seen 120ohms, that’s the 1st give away clue for a CAN issue, then you’d test the pair from end to end to see if it’s a wiring dis or going into the module either end or shorted to battery /earth… Ok, once the CAN was confirmed ok, the ECU relay was tested for live, that’s when the HR was discovered and the broken fuse found, which caused the comms issue. . If that fuse had blown due to age then a new one would have fixed the non start, but the faulty ECU tested by AC tronics leads us to think the ECU blew the fuse, we fitted a new ECU but didn’t discover the fuse because we used a digital meter instead of pulling some current through it. We took a punt on a BCM cos the engine wouldn’t turn off while the brake pedal was pressed. Thinking the trailer lights had caused a problem cos they were mangled and open to water ingress. And 2 days to Christmas and moving house as well. So….. be methodical and you’ll find it, don’t just guess. Hope this helps someone.

Well done, kept digging away at it,,,,,I have done a few vivaros (earlier ones) usually wiring faults, Front off and days of wire testing !!! we always load test wires,, we run 4, between me and my mates, so always parts swap and assistance available for free

I've thrown a couple at my short to ground pressure sensor.
Been through all fuses , relays and sensors. Fingers I find the missing link tomorrow

Thanks for the vids...was this causing the scan tool inability to read any codes?...i have renault master, wont start...battery good, engine strong, all electrics seemingly tested, but, scan tools cant read anything so im wondering if its like yr issue..? Was yr scan tool able to read anything? Cheers and any help or pointers appreciated!👍

What’s your red LED immobiliser light doing

@@thpxs0554 i dont think thats on... From memory, coz its been at mechanics a few weeks, "stop" light was on along with abs and vehicle in triangle with skid marks....although brakes fine as is steering...in any case that shouldnt cause ecu not to read sny codes though should it. Thats why me wondering if its a broken fuse like yrs...even though multi meter was giving a good reading ...let me know if yr scan tool was able to read codes or if u have any other ideas would appreciate it..thanks v much👍

So how was there continuity through that fuse if it was blown? im not getting this.

The owner of the van ( an electrician) put a digital meter on it and it bleeped, but when the tech came out he tested the fuses with a load ( a bulb if I remember correctly 10 months later) and it didn’t light, when I removed the green plastic centre moulding on the fuse to have a look it was melted and blackened but hanging on by a hair thickness of fuse, it could pass the digital meter test but not carry the amps required light the test lamp, if the owner had used a test lamp on day one we’d have changed the fuse, but since then he’s been using the van and that fuse blows occasionally, the RAC found the issue on the side of the rd when it became permanent, it was a wire worn through and shorting on the clutch arm ( I’m not sure it has one if it’s a concentric clutch cylinder) or gear lever, it’s properly fixed now and probably that’s all it ever really was.

Hi, I hope you be able to help my. I bought Renault Traffic week ago, it drives fine till today . Glow plug and service lights come on then lose power and cut off. Restart and drive again, that’s happened 3 times, but 4 time cuts off and doesn’t start any more. What I’m noticed, when ignition on engine management light doesn’t come on , indicators not working, central locking not working. When I plugged in my scanning tool nothing happened , it has no power from obd socket. I scanned before and worked fine but this time no response Any ideas what can be wrong with it?

My first thought is a communication issue with the BCM. Because the indicators etc aren’t working . I suggest you check all the fuses and particularly the ones on the battery that don’t look like fuses but they are , and check them with a test bulb not just a meter, you need to make sure they are passing current . When you turn on the ignition what does the immobiliser light do. That’s the first possible clue where to start. The BCM is under the steering wheel and often gets water or coffee spilled on it. When you say there’s no power at the OBD have you checked that with a meter or does the scanner just fail to communicate. It’s usually a simple fault that takes ages to locate. If a fuse is blown then you have find out where it shorted out to, usually a damaged bit of loom rubbing on the chassis, but even if the fuses are ok there could be a short circuit allowing voltage onto the CAN pair or even a short circuit across the CAN pair . Have a really good look in the fuse box under the bonnet and under it if you can see up from underneath, there’s usually a big (blue?) connector plug in or under or close to the fuse box and if you open it you may see corrosion which will cause lots of problems, its really a case of being methodical and checking fuses and continuity and corrosion. As it was intermittent then became permanent I’d be looking for a wiring issue, it’s very very common.

immobiliser light does not come on, no glow plugs lights to. I tried different scanning tool and still no power from OBD. Check the fuses on the battery seems alright.

Just fired up, fuse nr 9 have been blown. ( 10A Central locking, Diagnostic connector, Instrument panel, steering angle sensor) do you know why that fuse blown? When I scanned come one code P0089 (Fuel Pressure Regulator ) . Can it blow because of fuel pressure regulator?

It’s limited on power and glow plug and service light on. Code P0089
