The problem with this is that the magnetometer of ur smartphone will only be able to detect ferromagnetic metals ( metals that have iron init )/ magnet. it doesn't work on non ferromagnetic metals but it's cool regardless

@@d-bung-b if the metal you are trying to detect isn't attracted to magnets, let's say aluminum for example, then it can't be detected by the phone.
Yeah some metals I tried like aluminium and brass didn’t work. Others worked which is pretty cool
Don't most metal detectors only detect ferrous metal? I thought only the fancy ones had non-ferrous detectors..
@@ponch0person real metal detectors can detect all types of metals. They emit electromagnetic waves due to which a nearby metal gets energized and emits electric field of its own which is detect by a sensor

Yeah I just tried it out but my phone case has magnets in it, I took it out of the case and it kinda worked, but my camera protectors have metal in them, think it's still kinda messing with it. Don't really feel like taking them off though.
Yes and if a piece of metal isn't magnetized at all then it barely detects it because the sensor is built to detect the magnetic fields of the earth

App does not detects metal. It just detects magnetic field.
You can test it,
When you place it near a normal (non magnetized) metal... It does nothing.
When you place it near some magnetic field (for eg. Speaker)
.. it will beep.

I took a physics class on electricity and magnetism. From my understanding, the phone detects metal (even if it's not magnetic) because the metal increases the flux from the Earth's magnetic field. This is also how sea mines detect ships.
Regular metal detectors work differently: they induce Eddy currents in the metal which then produces its own (temporary) magnetic field that can be detected. This type of metal detector is used at traffic lights to detect cars and in airport security.
Terminology for those who are interested:
magnetic flux: magnetic field strength × cross-sectional area (units: Webers or Tesla*meters^2)
Eddy current: A pulse of electricity flows through a coil, producing a changing magnetic field. This creates (or induces) a changing current (flow of electricity) in the metal called an Eddy current. This then produces its own magnetic field that's detected. Wireless charging works very similarly except the Eddy current is used to charge your phone (after passing through the appropriate electronics, of course)
I could see this being useful to help find screws and other small metal objects in carpet

Normally these apps are fake af, but holy shit it's real
There's also a slight problem with its reliability due to the phone parts being metal, a compass being near metal will screw with its magnetic field (I think), I've forgotten or any other compass, a compass should always never be near metal to make sure it's accurate, as you may be walking in the wrong direction with a traditional compass if it is near metal. I've forgotten what the effect is called but it does exist, pretty cool tho.

Many years ago, there was a geocashing event, where if you found the extremely well hidden cache, you would get 100 bucks and dinner. A few years went past, everyone had metal detectors scanning for the little magnet they put in (it was on a big rock, where they had a very well fitting fake rock to hide it), and everyone was picking up slightly magnetic parts of the rock. My dad and uncle decided they wanted to have a go, but couldn't be bothered to bring a metal detector, so they used this. Turns out that the metal detector was so weak, that it couldnt pick up the random rocks, so they ended up finding it!
