Thanks for this! Nice to be able to map out where some of those sounds come from.
As for old game jams - Mega Man 2 Dr. Wiley is solid - but I also like the main theme. And the TMNT overworld track is fun too

Nice tutorial, and finished song! Also garbly square wave might be the best youtube chapter title ive seen in a while.
On the subject of favorite classic game tunes, I'm a big fan of Donkey Kong '94 Stage 9-8 (who knew the original gameboy could shred so hard), and the opening title theme for Robocop on the gameboy (this song has no right being as good as it is haha)

    Nice work!
Regarding classic video game music, I’ve always liked the underwater theme from Super Mario Bros.

    Hi Josh,
thank you very, very much! You did a fantastic job in this video! 👍
I learned a lot and got inspired to try it myself (got a M8 for chip tune and jungle/drum and bass)
The format is great (e.g. showing you operating the device, explanation while you do it and close up of the screen). Length and content is spot ont.
You are a great teacher and it was intresting and easy to follow your thoughts.
It would be great, if you could do some more stuff like this once in a while as I have many questions😇
    - Composition of chiptune: How do you come up with the melodic stuff and the rythm? Do you sketch it on a piano (e.g. melodies, scale, etc.)? How is your workflow? How do you get the musical idea?
    - Arrangement of chiptune: How do you arrange your tracks? How is your structure? How do you do transitions btw. A & B sections? How is your workflow?
    - Most important chiptune FXs: What are your favorite FX for Phrases? And tables.... More chiptune relevant table tricks would be nice?
    - Chiptune instruments: Which are the typicall instruments you use? Any tricks like the OSC-Table FX on the last instrument?
Maybe you could do a breakdown of a track you already made and just show and talk about these topics above (e.g. short showcasing the final piece, and then talk 2-3 minutes about each topic showing us around in the project. Or what where the challenges in the piece and how you solved it in the end).
Regarding my favorite chiptune: started on C64 and like stuff from Chris Huelsbeck and Rob Hubbard. I liked the Ultima tunes.
On Nintendo I like most of the Music of Castlevenia, Metroid and Zelda. Hard to pick just one piece.
I enjoyed your tune as well. Great stuff and looking forward to try something similar.😄

BTW: you are a hidden gem. The Youttube alorithm is not aware of your greatness. Took me some while to find you ;-)

@@thomasmorus3406 thank you so much! I love your suggestions for a layout of a video. I'd like to implement it, are you comfortable with me mentioning your CZcams username to share where the idea came from? And great choices of game music!

@@JoshIsMakingMusic Yes, you can mention me. And I will rewatch the tutorial again to try & remember all FX-tweaks 😀

    Hi JoshisMakingMusic,
    short question…
What´s the name of the software running on the Gameboy?
    Thx for your answer.

@@ralfbremen sorry I didn't clarify! It's called Little Sound DJ, or LSDJ for short. The Dirtywave M8 is designed extremely similarly to LSDJ, so if you're familiar with one, it'll be easier to learn the other!
