I enjoy your presentations. I have a story that goes along with your glacial rocks. I was working heavy construction for a firm that was putting on some new streets East of 182 in Portland. The area was overlooking the Columbia River on the second bench down from the upper level. Nice area with good dirt which we guarded from the locals to be used to back fill curbs and level some of the lots. Just under the good dirt was lots of roundish rocks of various colors. We had the grading already for the final inspection except to a rock that jutted 3" into the sub grade. The road grader just scrapped it. We had a D8 on the job so I had the operator take a "whack at it. No luck, he dug down around it about 18" but it just got bigger and he could not move it or knock the top off.
The local gas company was having lunch and the rig had a jack hammer so I asked to borrow it. I ran through 5 tips of points as we called them. All it did was put a small dent and round over the points. I returned them with apologies. They took a look and choose not to try it.
The next day the company brought out a 90# hammer and lots of tips. 4 guys worked all day, they had 6 or 8 tips stuck in the rock as the tips got hot and rounded over. Finally at about 5 pm they noticed a crack with a little dust. The rock had broken off about 10" below the top with all the points sticking out. They
took a loader and put the whole thing on a truck back to the shop. It was on display for several years.
The fresh break was a pink granite. The hole was filled and graded and it remains under the street.
