    The biggest lesson I learned from the rave review South Park: The Video Game received in Official Nintendo 64 magazine at the time, was that some game journalism might not be entirely influenced by the truth.....

    • @freddiejohnson6137
      @freddiejohnson6137 Před 2 lety +8

      They did rate many games very highly pretty sure anything published by Acclaim was given 90+% and even very average games that got reviewed were 70+%. A lot of the time the words in the review didn't match up with the score when it seemed like a bad or average game but got a reasonably high score. I say that considering by the end there was very little text in the reviews and it was mainly pictures with a blurb under. You could tell they were just there to try and make it look like all games on the system were of a pretty high quality since there were only a few a month being released.

    • @oldschoolm8
      @oldschoolm8 Před 2 lety +1

      @@freddiejohnson6137 I’ve never thought of it like that, but it makes perfect sense. They were reviewing and championing games from their given console to sell more copies and, therefore, more magazines. It’s mutually beneficial for all parties involved.....still dishonest though!

    • @gimo80
      @gimo80 Před 2 lety +1

      I’m pretty sure the South Park FPS on the PS1 was handled by Appalooza while the N64 version was developed by Iguana, thus using the Turok 2 engine which made it significantly superior from a technical perspective. But the single player was just absolute shite, so repetitive beyond BELIEF. I remember liking the multiplayer however for some reason.
      Chef’s Luv Shack was also a lot better on N64 and I had a faint whiff of fun with it when I had a few mates round…but that’s it. The quiz part was so poorly handled.
      South Park Rally was just woeful, full stop. Acclaim rushed these out after getting hold of the license and forced a relatively competent developer like Iguana to push the FPS game out for Xmas. And I remember the Official Nintendo Magazine giving these games 90% with the ‘awesome’ logo on it. Iggy’s Wreckin Balls, Shadowman, WWF Attitude…they all got 90+%. Interesting indeed, albeit I genuinely like Shadowman.

    • @oldschoolm8
      @oldschoolm8 Před 2 lety +1

      @@gimo80 YES! I remember the “awesome” logo for some shite games. And yes, the multiplayer for South Park was quite fun compared to the single player. I just clearly remember saving up my pocket money for a game related to this naughty, fun, late night show that I adored, and still do, and it being very disappointing. Thing is, if you download a shit game nowadays, it’s no real biggie, but back in the N64 90’s, a game was nearly an investment! You had to like it, whether you did or not. It’s maybe why rose tinted, retro game goggles are applied to crap games.

    I absolutely loved South Park. If I remember correctly I originally played it on N64. Ya it's rough on the graphics a bit, but it just adds to the charm of South Park which always had a wonky animation style (which i love). It could've been better yes, buts its not nearly as bad as everyone says it is.

    • @adamleviness1039
      @adamleviness1039 Před rokem +1

      Yea, the N64 version was apparently much better. I never played the Playstation version, but a lot of the complaints they bring up weren't an issue. You could play against AI in that one, the load times weren't an issue, and I don't remember any obscure questions to answer. Same thing with South Park the video game. I was young, but it was funny and the graphics were definitely better on the N64, the levels were decent. The only problem I had was the final boss. I could never kill him, even with all the cheats. I just couldn't get him to stop charging up his health. I know you have to shoot the button to stop him from powering up, but it just didn't work for me no matter what I shot it with. IDK it was so upsetting.

    There is one correction. Wagner's "Ring" is a cycle of four operas. It is where the famous "Ride of the Valkyries" comes from. Yes, I am in that slim subset of opera lovers and video gamers. I have played games with plots as ridiculous and convoluted as that 16-hour four-night mess... On paper, a great game could be made with that plot and amazing music. An immense RPG with Dwarves, giants, and dragons... The parents of the protagonist are twins and his soulmate is the product of his only grandfather and a tree! Inbreeding in Grand Opera is a-okay as long as you sing it. The protagonist in "Secret of Mana" was a tree as well.

      @@yapdat7036 CZcams is s great resource. Try the ones you have heard of and listen to a bit. Carmen is pretty melodic and has some popular tunes. A lot of people use that as an intro. I love the heavy Germans. And one of the better choices is actually relevant. The third act of "Die Walkure" starts with"The Ride of the Valkyries" Start there and see how far you can hang with it. If it gets bogged down fast forward to the finale with the "magic fire music". If you hear something intriguing enough to listen to again, you will get more out of it when you do

      As an Italian critic once said - 'opera is the combination of theather and music, for the detriment of both'. Classical music is awesome, and the songs of something like the aforemention Carmen are fucking killer. But the vocals and the tropes of the genre in general make it unsufferable.
      I challenge any newcomer to listen to Carmen or any really neat opera with vocals and without to tell me they liked it more as an opera. Not that I think it's impossible, or that opera has no value on itself, but my point is that opera is an artform that reflects the affectation and panache of European aristocracy of the time, and that generated a very niche and hermetic form of expression, one that is nigh-impossible to enjoy without proper reference and introduction.
      Cavalleria Rusticana is infinitely better as an instrumental, check it out. Same with Carmen.

    Big oof on that last one. It looked to me like an absolutely neutered version of Pilot Wings on the SNES. I've never played Pilot Wings 64, but I remember liking Pilot Wings A LOT on the SNES, its a really fun game to me, so it kinda boggles my mind how a more modern "version" of the game did so poorly. Like... good lord, you can just LOOK at the thing and realize its bad, I could FEEL how bad the controls were and I wasn't even playing it! Plus that animation and really jerky camera... bleh
    EDIT: forgot to mention. At LEAST Superman 64 can be entertainingly bad... and its at the very least... playable? lol unlike that pile of garbage at #1

    the one thing i never understood was how electronic gaming monthly, which i view as the bible of games gave the south park game a pretty good score. they admitted the whole thing was crap, but gave it pretty good scores for being funny, and that's about it.

    Ok so… over in Europe I can see how your impression of Harley Davison might be described as “cool” or “fun.” Here in the US, however… not so much. In the US we see them as Boomer machines, a way for a nearly retired dentist to waste a stupid amount of money on chasing their decades old idea of what’s cool.

      He used to work with Ben and Peter on WhatCulture many years ago so they lovingly parody him. He is now a wrestler but he has a distinct vocal style and they like to quote him directly when saying stuff like "if you wanna get serious about this..." and quoting a technically correct fact or detail.
      Hope that makes sense!
