Thank-you for this EZ to understand video. Great picture to know which tube to cut as well. As well as explanation of the clear water drainage. And to wait a minute before trying to release the catheter. This is nerve wracking for someone who's never done it before.
Got the catheter to release. 😅

Nicely done video. I have the three-pronged at the top and was relieved to see exactly how to do this. My doctor was telling me this while I waited to go for surgery. To get verbal instructions when you've never even seen a catheter was not the best way to teach. Even a half sheet of paper with a diagram and the steps would have been much appreciated. I am so glad CZcams exists! But I have to say, finding a really good video for whatever you're looking for can be time-consuming. It takes skill to produce educational videos. I didn't realize until recently how much skill!

You MUST use a syringe! You need to know it was 10cc you removed as that is what went in. What goes in must come out. If for any reason you don’t get 10cc, such as a blockage or a faulty cath balloon, you will be pulling a partially deflated balloon through a urethra. Ummmm, NO thank you. Patient comfort. Certainly in an emergency you can cut but protocol is a syringe. Why would anyone want to take that chance!? The damage you can do by pulling a partially filled 14-16fr through a urethra isn’t going to be fun for patient and it’s problematic to infection, urethral tearing etc. Cutting is lazy nursing. Period.

    • @hellopinkham
      @hellopinkham Před 5 lety +2

I recommend using a syringe. They're cheap and easy to obtain. if however, you do go this route, at the very least use a measuring cup to assure full deflation of the Foley balloon,
The balloon holds 10cc of saline, so you should have 10cc of saline after deflation. Then you know that it is safe to pull the catheter through.
Pulling a partially deflated balloon through your urethra isn't only going to hurt badly, it's gonna cause more problems.
Oh and be sterile! Use gloves and alcohol.
I believe the information I've given to be true, you shouldn't

One way not to do it: Do not let Jessica, a nurse at San Leandro hospital remove it. She didn't deflate the balloon. Just took a hard yank, and pulled it out. There will be blood.

Two catheter changes in the same day
After a month of placement, my catheter became clogged. At midnight I had severe cramps and an attempt to unblock it with a larger syringe full of distilled water for flushing failed.
So I emptied the balloon with an empty smaller syringe and expected the catheter to come out by itself. But it didn't come out even when I pulled it. I pulled harder and the catheter stretched like a rubber band. Once before I already had an independent forced withdrawal of the catheter, with pain and bleeding of the prostate, but then there was no such elastic resistance of the catheter.
    What to do?
I am 74 years old and have been wearing a catheter for 7 years and maintain and change it myself.
I knew the problem was mechanical - one half of the inside of the catheter was calcified with sand and the outside of the balloon had sand deposited so although deflated, the balloon would not penetrate the bladder sphincter.
So I took a piece of soft wire, the kind used when connecting reinforcement for concrete columns and beams. I pulled the wire into the catheter tube and gradually turned it left and right. When I managed to get her two-thirds of the way up the catheter, I squeezed her firmly over the catheter tube and, regardless of the pain, pulled her out with the catheter.
That worked, the catheter came out, the balloon and the drainage holes of the catheter were lined with sand.
It hurt and I bled but not more than an average period.
I waited a few hours for the blood to drain from the penis and then inserted a new catheter.
I didn't fall asleep until around 8am and slept until 1pm
Then I went out on the footpath. to hit my 5km for the day.
And when I was about 2 kilometers in, I felt the balloon on the catheter burst, even though it was only filled with 10 milliliters of the recommended 30.
I turned back and walking home I could feel the edges of the protruding ruptured balloon cutting my prostate and urethra. In doing so, I peed in panties.
At home, the catheter had already come out by itself and there was new bleeding.
Then I put a new catheter and now I am calm.
