    Oooh I ordered the Hahnemuhle sketchbook as well, but it hasn't arrived yet - so your video has me excited that the paper is decent! I love the Etchr one though, partly because it doesn't lift easily (I like papers like Arches where layering is easier than lifting). I wanted to warn you too that the PO64 fades really badly, especially in tints. I know Schmincke says 4/5 stars for that Saturn Orange, but I think they only tested masstone because the diluted washes started disappearing within the first month or two in the window. Just in case you want to mark that LF concern on your color chart to remind you when painting any gifts/wall art. I look forward to the other video testing the sketchbooks further :)

      I'm so anxious to dive back into those sketchbooks some more and see how they do on different kinds of paintings. But yes, I do feel that they lift pretty easily, so that'll be interesting. I was definitely going to peruse your website in GREAT detail in regards to my new paints to make sure I knew what I was using, so thank you for the heads-up! I am definitely starting to mark my swatch sheets with what IS and ISN'T lightfast because of selling more of my work now. I'm hoping to also get my own lightfast swatch sheets in the window next week. I'm dying to know what you'll think of the new sketchbooks. I wish I had more time RIGHT NOW to paint in them some more, but I'm trying to leave for a 3-day adventure ride, so time is limited, darn it! I'm hoping to film a video tomorrow before I go and maybe I can squeeze in using those sketchbooks again. Fingers crossed.

      Thanks, Dee. I've had a few suggestions to use it on paper with "less" sizing, so I'll try that and see if I can reduce the shine. The shine doesn't *really* bother me, but it would be good to know how to paint without it. The pans re-wet so easily and the paint spread so beautifully that I think I will greatly enjoy using these colors.

      @@MirandaWatsonArt they have good options around ultramarine where they include a particularly finely ground version that can be useful in some circumstances. I've got a really useful mucky colour, I think it is green umber or something like that. Ugly but lovely.

    I had been eyeing up that Schmincke Botanicals set, but decided to behave myself, lol. I rearranged the other set of full pan colours, and you can also squeeze a half pan on each row, to make 12 colours, heheh. 😂 So many lovely items in this haul, and the Hahnemuhle books look great - lovely painting (even if it’s not on the first page, lol). I hope your finger is better…ouch that looked painful! 😭

Gotta get back to that first page after all... (face-slap). I think my finger is getting better but I haven't fully decided yet. I can type with it now without cringing, so yes, I suppose it is better. It's still very fat and partially numb. Ugh. Gotta use it a lot this weekend, too. Wish me luck, LOL!

    The painting is gorgeous and I hope your finger healed nicely -- OUCH! I know what you mean about the Royal and Langnickel brushes. I recently got a R&L brush in a Let's Make Art gouache box that was supposed to be cut and turned into an irregular brush to make evergreen trees. However, I found some different old brushes to use instead for this, because I really like it! It's cheap, but the point is good and the bristles snappy. I'm going to use it for acrylics. Love the Hahnemuhle cotton sketchbooks. The colors are so vibrant. However, I like the Strathmore Readycut too. It does better than the cellulose paper I use, so it's great practice paper. I got a good deal on it, so I bought a bunch of the 11x14. I slice it in half and turn it into sketchbooks. But yeah, I'd never pay full-price for it.

    I've been using Khadi paper for quick paintings for a while now, and it's lovely to use. As far as I know all their papers are sized, so I'd have to check. The paper us too soft for masking fluid, though, because the fibre length is different due to how the cotton is sourced (remnants and offcuts from India's garment industry, especially tshirts, which is a brilliant way of reducing waste)
    The paper's handmade, so it also has more irregularities. I love them 💕

    • @MirandaWatsonArt
      @MirandaWatsonArt  Před 2 lety +3

      Ah yes, I can see how masking fluid might be a problem because the paper fibers do seem to be quite soft. I was pleasantly surprised with how the sketchbooks performed in my simple tests because the paper I mentioned in the video that wasn't sized broke down immediately and this paper seemed just fine. I'm glad to know it has worked for you and I'm excited to use it more in the future!

I love the full pans and each time you said ‘12 pans’ I couldn’t help myself but laugh 🤭. I also took out the pan holder, put magnets on the nine full pans, and inserted extra 18 half pans (I put magnets on the bottom of those too). I got both the Hahnemuhle square sketchbooks several weeks ago and I have been LOVING the one I'm painting in!! You know, my larger one has a warped cover as well. That's interesting, I assumed it was a one time thing in my case. I think we ought to let Wet Paint and Hahnemuhle know. You are going to LOVE these. One caution: be careful with tape and masking fluid. Use LOW TACK tape and remove promptly. Use non-tinted masking fluid and I don't recommend using a masking fluid pen. I did and the blue mask just soaked into the paper and never came out. Remove promptly.
    I also got the 9 full pan Schmincke - I love the tin as I mentioned in another post but mine also doesn't sit flat. Maybe I'll just put it own a towel as I paint. I did not have to use magic eraser or steel wool to prepare -- they have done something to the enamel so it doesn't bead up. You can fit 12 full pans in the palette with the insert. I did take out the insert and I fit in 18 full pans and 2 half pans. Hey you may not realize, but the 9 pan has 3 primaries, 3 secondaries and 3 darks... and the primaries all mix to neutrals with their compliments! THAT is why it is ordered like that - if you mix a color on the top row with what's directly under it ,you will get a grey or black. You can actually get a grey out of the yellow and ultramarine violet. So it's actually a Stephen Quiller neutralizing color-wheel palette. Strange that they don't mention that. Also, you get a fabulous black by mixing the perelynes green and violet.
    I don't like PY 3 (also known as Hansa Yellow Light) for lightfastness, so I replaced it with Cad Yellow Med which also neutralizes with Ultramarine Violet. The Perelynes have a large drying shift -- it's mostly about the pigments, some have more of a drying shift than others.

      I'm glad to hear that you have been loving those sketchbooks. Too bad they aren't making the covers better. I almost exclusively use blue masking fluid, so thank you for the heads-up! I have a cream-colored W&N one that I will try and I have a fine-tip Daniel Smith that I can also test. I'll do it in an inconspicuous area (hopefully). Yes, if that Schminke palette is arranged that way for a specific reason, they should tell us! But regardless, I already rearranged everything into the one palette, but still it would have been nice to know. I love making a beautiful dark by mixing a purple and a green. It's always been one of my favorites. I'm very curious how the lightfast testing will come out. Too bad I have to wait so long for my own testing, lol. For now, I will rely on others' testing. Thanks for all the good info, Jenn.

    Sorry about that finger accident. OUCH! Schmincke is my all time favorite brand because its the absolute best for fine wash glazing and that's mostly the way I paint. Its the most finely ground and sinks deep into the inner layers of the paper for a deep rich built up that can resemble an oil painting. Schmincke is the brand famous Artist Susan Harrison-Tustain uses. I learned a lot from her. For Schmincke, always soak and stretch your paper. With a Journal, precondition the paper with lots and water fist to remove the extra sizing. Many papers have way too much! I have never had any shine on my Schmincke paints. I have many brands and this has never been an issue with any of my paint except for DaVinci & Sennelier. I actually dislike Sennelier.

      Yes, that's what I was thinking of doing with mine! Also trying it with regular gouache as well.

    I loved your painting so pretty! To me only one thing funner than painting. Puppies!!! Or kitties or baby animals of any cute kind!! So sorry about your owie! I slammed my fingers in the sliding glass door! Ouch! Loved your haul, did the botanical set have a purple? I still have not gotten any Shminka paints yet they are so expensive 😫! Stay safe and keep on making pretties!!!😀👍🎨✍🙏💖👋

      Thank you, Jackie. I just love baby animals. Shutting your finger in the sliding glass door sounds really painful - did it break? The botanical set didn't have a purple - I guess you get to make your own each time. Schminke wouldn't be my first choice of paints to purchase, that's for sure. The Rosa Gallery ones were amazing, though!

    Sorry for your finger! So you can recommend the new Hahnemuhle 100% Cotton Sketchbook? I was going to get one for my birthday right now! (it was this last week) Enjoy the new watercolour palettes from Schmincke! 😍

      Thank you, Dj. Yes, I can recommend them, at least for the painting style this landscape was done in. It was a decent mixture of wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry, so hopefully it's good all around! Happy Birthday!

    Miranda , what’s up with this multiplication array issue you have!?! 😂😃🤣 Did you shout profanities loudy with the smashed finger incident?? Checked the botanical out… pricey!! Tfs this review… love swatching watching! But I realize you don’t do your mass tone swatching at the same sitting and you don’t swatch in a checkerboard pattern to prevent bleeding… hmmm!! 🙏🏾🤩😃🥰

      Hahaha, no kidding on the math thing lately. I guess it's just too simple, lol. I was actually absolutely silent when I smashed my finger because I was trying to pretend it didn't happen. But a few minutes later I was like "OW! Double OW! This really really hurts. AAAGGGH!" It was probably pretty funny.

    Thanks for this! I was just looking for reviews on the Hanhemule 100% cotton notebooks. Did you find that wet on wet dried relatively (or too) quickly on it?

    • @MirandaWatsonArt
      @MirandaWatsonArt  Před 2 lety +1

      Hmm... Good question. I only did wet-on-wet in the creek and I didn't notice it drying too quickly, but I'd have to use it more to say for sure. I'll let you guys know as I know!

    Was the paper you disliked dubbed the Strathmore "Imperial" 500 Series, by chance? Because I, uh, just ordered several pads of it. 😬
    When I was much younger, my dad accidentally smashed four of my fingers when he shut the trunk lid of our car on them. It hurt like a MF-er, and I'm pretty sure my joints were dislocated for a time, but I'm happy to say that my fingers suffered no lasting damage. He's felt awful about the incident ever since, however.

      I'll look tomorrow and update this comment regarding the Strathmore paper. Ouch on the four fingers - one was bad enough! But I'm glad they are all good now. Part of my fingernail did die, but it's growing back now and the finger itself feels fine. Whew!

    Just started watching but wanted to suggest something. Do you have a couple of heavy books to sandwich the errant sketchbook between? That would give more even pressure than a clip. I would put a thin cloth around sketchbook to protect cover.

    • @eileenvalachovic9435
      @eileenvalachovic9435 Před 2 lety +1

      Still watching. Would watercolor ground work on unlined paper to make it more usable?

      Haven't finished yet. Years ago, when I slammed a car door shut on my finger, the nail bed turned black and HURT. A doctor heated a needle tip to pierce the nail. That allowed the blood to escape and helped SO much with the pain. Unsure if still protocol. You could Google it.

      I believe so. However, I think this Khadi paper is sized because it felt WAY better to use than that other unsized sketckbook, so I'll keep playing and see what I think. I do have a little bit of watercolor ground left, but I may have to purchase an additional bottle eventually...
