- Paul Simon first heard this tune in 1965 performed by South American band, Los Incas. He asked for permission to use the tune and he added his own lyrics for the 1970 Simon & Garfunkel album, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" The result is a track with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel singing above the backing provided by Los Incas. It also resulted in a complicated (but actually very friendly) lawsuit brought by the son of the original composer.
I loved this song at 17 and now I'm 66 and it's still beautiful. Thanks.

Born in 1953 and grew up on Simon and Garfunkel. I'm a singer, song writer and play harmonica. This song always brought a tear to my eyes as it's so beautiful yet bittersweet...
We played this song at my sons funeral it sounded so good. I miss you Logan 10/3/96 - 6/3/2023 I love and miss you so much.
So sweet, still! I loved this song when I was 14. Now I'm 67 and my love for it is still fresh and reminiscent and my School days.

40 years ago this is still one of the beautiful songs in the 70s..i used to play with my recorder every night..miss my teenage time most wonderful with all beautiful songs around.👍👍👍

Always loved this song. I first heard it as a child growing up in the 70s. The music and voice is so soothing to the spirit and soul.
I’ve loved this song almost my whole life even though it came out 7 years before I was born. It was one of my mothers favorite songs and she played it all of the time. Every time I listen to it it reminds me of her and it makes me miss her more.

At 8 years old this song was buzzing in my head backpacking in Yosemite National Park without any family. I was trying to be a big boy and not miss my parents. I added my own lyrics: "I'd rather be at home. If I could, I surely would." 😩😭

I love this song at 17. Also, I am learning how to play it as a solo instrumental piece on guitar. Simon and Garfunkel were two of the greatest artist that will ever be. Actually now that we have the internet for info, it seems to me Simon screwed up a perfectly good song and lyrics. The original seems to be about a Condor waking up on a beautiful morning, spreading his wings, and flying down to the river to drink, while soaring over green mountains and hills. Wouldn't an English translation of that gorgeous scene been wonderful?
Paul Simon is a great lyricist. Maybe he tried your idea and couldn't make it work.
When the internet fails you ask an ancient old man man.
The song is about a man enslaved to work in the mines in the mountain ranges of the Andes. For his constant refusal to work in constant attempts to escape he is tied to ground and and is killed.
His son who witnesses his father's bravery for freedom how can he his son ever be better than if he could he surely would.! The old man as life leaves the old man he looks up and seize the Condor passing by. And he knows he is now knows he is free. The Condor pasa.
