  • From No Time Limit to Combat Jiu Jitsu, BJJ rule sets are pretty weird. Even the most normal-seeming ones have weird loopholes that can be exploited. In this video, I talk all about that and more.

    You’ve made an interesting case for the turtle rule in ADCC.
    I have not been a fan of the idea that a takedown isn’t scored unless they are on their butt for 3 seconds.
    For instance, if we are on the ground, and I am attacking you from turtle, and we got there because I initiated takedown. Then I de facto took you down, and that should be awarded!
    That said, the case you’ve outlined here, could be that the benefits of that rule on other aspects of the game may out weigh that negative.
    Interesting case.

  • @biashacker
    @biashacker Před 6 měsíci +7

    I like CJJ and EBI however I think EBI needs to introduce the molly-whop rule to stop competitors from stalling. What is the molly-whop rule? Essentially the molly-whop rule is, if in regulation a competitor is getting destroyed by the other competitor i.e. like Eddie Cummings did to Boogie Martinez without Eddie getting a submission, then there would be no overtime. Eddie Cummings would have won the match. Hence if you a getting your guard constantly passed, put in submissions, and you are just surviving with minimal offense you are going to lose the match - no overtime for you, no exceptions.
    One of Eddie's students uses the molly-whop rule (it was his idea) in his tournaments and he has eliminated boring stalling matches.

  • @SkepticalAaron
    @SkepticalAaron Před 6 měsíci

    I think the UWW actually has the best ruleset. It's a points ruleset, but you can't stall and they have specific time limits for stalling instead of it being subjective and it is very aggressive. If you stall you will lose. Stalling gives your opponent 1 point and if you give 3 stalling points in a match you lose, no matter what the score. One of the best examples of how ive seen this was a absolute gi match. The much bigger guy was trying the "be fat" tactic you see in most ibjjf absolute matches, but he got DQ'd like 3 minutes into the match for stalling. None of the matches are boring, or if they are they end quick because someone will just get DQd.

  • @SaftonYT
    @SaftonYT Před 5 měsíci

    I like CJJ, I was leery of the perceived gimmick of the ruleset at first but I think it's neat overall. I've seen some very fun matches.
    That said, I do have some complaints regarding EBI and CJJ's submission-only & Overtime ruleset. Eddie Bravo's premise was to do away with the artificiality that comes with a points system and judges while encouraging more exciting matches. Okay, great in principle. Not only is everything said in the video occasionally true about potentially boring matches in EBI, but IMO it gets worse because the ruleset fails at delivering on its own premise.
    What I mean by this is that Ride Time is, functionally speaking, just a points system in all but name. Eddie Bravo can say whatever he wants, but how is controlling a mandated position for 0.5 seconds longer than your opponent less of an arbitrary & artificial system than being awarded points for takedowns, guard passes, etc.?
    Furthermore, I think it creates situations where the better grappler doesn't always win the match. I've seen EBI matches where one guy -- we'll call him Grappler A -- absolutely dominates the Regulation period: consistently takes his opponent (Grappler B) down, wins every scramble, controls every position, threatens with multiple tight submissions, etc. but isn't quite able to finish the job inside the allotted time. Then they go to Overtime. Grappler A who did really well in Regulation ends up losing in Overtime -- not by getting subbed, but by a margin of a few seconds or even fractions of a second of ride time. By a margin so small that a potential timekeeping error could sway it in his direction and it took forever for the officials to tally up both guys' scores and double-check their work. Now you can try to tell me that Grappler A was the inferior competitor on the night despite the fact that I watched him absolutely dominate his opponent for ten minutes before losing the "game" of Overtime by a few fractions of a second... but I don't know that I buy it.

    I don't see why jiu-jitsu rules are so hard. Pulling guard should be result in a negative of some sort, stalling shouldn't be allowed, points shouldn't exist, time limit should be 8-10 minutes with EBI overtime (except 3 rounds, 90 seconds per round), and if there is no submission, neutral judges decision.

    My 3 favorite rulesets:
    - no time limit 10 or tap: stalling becomes useless, and you need to actually know how to defend positions, not only submissions like in sub only.

    - Quintet
