    hello everyone

I just know the people saying this bs are using all kinds of single use plastic but wanna have a go at someone they don’t know online over using acrylic yarn... as if people make a whole project out of it and then throw it away 🙄 like it’s not 100x better than buying from a fast fashion brand... nobody is finding patchwork cardigans in the ocean acrylic is fine 🙄 these people better be looking at where their wool is sourced from and making sure that’s sustainable too...

    • @Ddalgiichigo
      @Ddalgiichigo Před 2 lety +61

There’s literally nothing wrong with using plastic and acrylic for something that is gonna get a lot of use

    • @kitscott6814
      @kitscott6814 Před 2 lety +33

Yeah, I was a little concerned about your use of acrylic over wool, but I understand your point now.
I would just like to say that I wouldn't really trust that site? As while it may be a good resource in a pinch they repeatedly cite 'PETA-approved vegan' as a qualification for items they're suggesting on their site and repeatedly link to other sites and articles that use PETA as a resource, which no self-respecting, trustworthy, environmentalist or animal-welfare supporting site or organisation would do. It may just be an oversight on their part, but PETA is known for misinformation, pseudoscience, and killing animals under their care for no good reason. They are quite literally famous for incredibly harmful practices and advice, and any advice from a source that cites them is automatically suspect, even if it's due to being misled.
However, you're correct, there are issues with animal welfare in the wool industry, so I fully support your decision to look into different brands to see where their wool comes from and how it's produced before buying.

@@Ddalgiichigo The problem with acrylic doesn't only arise when throwing your clothes away though. When you wash acrylic garments, they release a ton of microplastics which are harmful for the environment. Arguably making clothes out of acrylic is still a lot better than buying fast fashion! And imo individual consumers shouldn't be judged for their environmental impact anyway. But the situation is a bit more complex than whether or not you throw your acrylic cardigan in the ocean.

TIP: If you're wondering how to get rid of the icky holes in your stitches, I recommend going against what you were originally told to do... "Yarn over" ew, try "yarn under" it gives a cleaner look and doesn't finish with a "holey" stitch. I hope this helps anyone who didn't know

This is everything I would have wanted back when I began my patchwork cardigan oct 2020. It is almost everything I did and planned even down to the colors and stitchwork (I did double crochet red, half double crochet white and a variegated light to charcoal grey with alternating hdc and single crochet), and same red ribbing as well. I used the color change method, crocheting long panels saved me a ton of sewing. The only thing I did that I haven’t seen elsewhere was crochet a half square for each shoulder in between the front side panels and the back panels. Beautiful design and tutorial 🙌

My cardigan looks so good and I'm so happy with it. I ended up using a mix of granny squares and half double crochet stitch grids (sorry not quite sure what they're called) and it came out looking pretty eccentric and out there but really really pretty. It took me maybe 3 weeks to do it, most of the time obviously went towards making the patches but it really didn't take as long as I thought it would.

Such a great tutorial! Love your comedy. One tip for securing the buttons: you could either use an embroidery (mouline) thread which is thicker, or double the sewing thread by taking twice the amount of thread needed and pulling the needle to the half-way point of it. Then, you can tie the ends into a knot thus creating a loop with the needle stuck inside. After passing through the button once normally, slip the needle through that loop hanging on the wrong side of the garment. Pull tight. No more escaping knots! (I really can’t explain in English, lol)

I have a few tricks for making biggish thread knots!
When sewing with one strand with a knot at the bottom (vs.knotting the two ends together)
Method 1: is to create the initial knot loop (lil pretzel), but instead of pulling the knot tight right away, keep it and thread the end through the loop a few more times. Once I’ve looped it 3-4 times I usually pull it tight and it makes a bigger knot for ya.
Method 2: Another trick is to use the same method as creating a French knot in embroidery. Thread your needle and then pick which end you want your knot on. Then holding the needle pointing up in one hand and the loose thread end pointing down in the other, bring them side by side. Then I pinch the loose thread end and the needle together (the thread end should be near the eye of the needle and the length should run up along the needle and back around to the eye). Now holding the needle + thread pinched together in one hand, pinch the length of thread a few centimetres from the tip of the needle and start twisting the needle tip around the thread (basically holding the length of thread steady and circling the needle around the thread. The thread pinched near the eye of the needle serves to anchor the thread). After creating several twists/loops around the needle (usually 4ish), pinch both the top piece of thread and bottom (near the needle eye) together in one hand and gently push/pull the needle through all the loops. Don’t let go of the threads until you have pulled all the thread through and then you should have a nice chunky knot at the bottom.
When sewing with doubled up thread / thread you want to knot both loose ends together:
Method: Thread the needle and knot the two strands together as usual. This should leave you with a loop of thread with a needle on it. Then take the item you are sewing and make a small stitch, but instead of pulling the thread all the way through so the knot lands on the material, pull your needle most of the way, but hang on to the knot so you have about an inch still sticking out. Then pass your needle through the little bit of looped thread by the knot and pull the needle to tighten the knot against the fabric. This way you don’t have to worry about a tiny knot passing through a bigger weave of material because it is basically tied to the material now.

after two years of procrastinating, I finally finished my sweater. my first attempt, I made all the squares way too small because i did a small brain move, so I gave up for a year. this attempt I made all the squares way too big and the sweater ended up super oversized. so I begrudgingly removed a row from the back and reattached everything. the sweater's a bit wonky and the color pattern is a bit off in some places, but I'm super happy with it since it's my second piece of clothing I crocheted and the first piece that I'll actually might wear. my sanity is dead.

IM LITERALLY ABOUT TO START MY CARDIGAN SO ILL UPDATE YOU EACH DAY
Day 1: I found this video and was excited to make it, I made the design for my cardigan and I’m using similar colors to you bc I love the color red but mine is a bit different, I have 80 squares to make
Day 2: I was in the car all day, however, I got to practice making squares
Day 3 goal: hopefully the day I get my yarn
What actually happened: I did get my yarn and I’m trying to adjust because it’s a bit thinner than the yarn I practiced with
*UPDATE just found out I have art camp through day 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 so I’m probably gonna end up finishing in a month*
*I hope to have it done by August 9th because I’m going on vacation and 1. I don’t wanna leave the unfinished work while I’m gone and 2. I want to bring it with me on the trip*
Day 4 goal: my goal is do have at least 15-20 squares done
What actually happened: I did not get 15-20 squares done but I did get one of the arm cuffs done so that’s good
Day 5 goal: I hope to be done with about 40-45 squares if possible
    What actually happened:
Day 6 goal: I really hope I have 60 done by this day
    What actually happened:
Day 7 goal: I hope I’m done with all 72 squares however I may make 80
    What actually happened:
Day 8 goal: I hope I have finished sewing all the squares in each panel
    What actually happened:
Day 9 goal: I hope that I have all the panels + arms sewn together
    What actually happened:
Day 10 goal: I hope I finish the button band and sewing on the ribbon
    What actually happened:
*I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MY PLANS ARE THAT WEEK SO WISH ME LUCK*
