- What is the fastest and most efficient way to get across Dublin City Centre?
After sitting in traffic one day, watching people walk past us, we wondered would you be faster walking across the city than driving? So we got 6 willing victims to battle Dublin's streets in rush hour traffic.
We had Blake Boland in the electric city car; the Volkswagen e-Up. Paddy Comyn was on foot, walking his way. Lauren Tuite took her Orbea e-bike. Dave Humphries used a high-powered BMW motorbike. Francisco Gonzalez tested his fitness running. Feljin Jose used his Leap Card to get the bus.
The challenge was to commute from the AA offices on South William Street in Dublin to the park-and-ride facility in Whitehall, a distance of about 6km. We left in rush hour traffic at exactly 5.45pm on a Tuesday in early May.
Who would win?

Weather will decide a lot
This was a really excellent video. As good as anything from anywhere else around the world. A bicycle or e-bike is a great option for urban commuting. Just add some decent pannier bags, racks or baskets for luggage and always have some light rainwear or a bike poncho for those wet days. Good lights and mirrors are essential too in my opinion.
This is great content, fair play to all involved.
E-bikes are the cheapest, greenest and happiest mode of transport. I know because I own one. Lauren is the real winner. Way to go girl.
Brilliant work guys, really enjoyed watching that, very interesting results
Thanks Adrian, delighted you enjoyed it!
Interesting bit of fun. Well done guys, great to show the different options available in the city. I look forward to see the next edition.
Thanks Hugh - we might go Southside (including Luas) next
The irony of it all, there is no SEAI grant to help buy an electric motorcycle. Motorbikes get left out of any traffic management discussions by the NRA and Councils (going by media reports). But wins the "race"
There is a Red Light @ 4:46 all traffic has stopped but the cyclist continued on through the junction?
Bicycle breaking road traffic laws to get into second place... But at least it shows Motorcycles are the clear winner.
I have to say that was a fascinating watch for tho' I live in the north I know some of those areas of Dublin fairly well. For me if I lived in Dublin the only way I'd get around it would be on the bike ie Lauren's method of getting there. I've said it for years that the bike whether electric or not is the only way to get around big cities providing you don't have anything large or bulky to carry. One question I have tho is why didn't Dave use the bus lanes as I know at least in the north here the bus lanes can be used by anyone on a motorbike.
For large or bulky there are a large variety of permanent or removable panniers plus various racks and baskets for cargo. And add a trailer without spending thousands on a Cargo bike for those weekly shopping trips. I've pulled over 70kg on a trailer with moderate hills for over 6km without too much trouble and carried a full sized lawnmower. No e, just me! And I'm mid fifties and not particularly fit.
Why wasn’t there a regular bike?
Good point Lara! It wasn't by design, as there's loads of modes of transport we didn't use. But don't worry, we're going to be making more of these videos, and should have one next time! Hope you enjoyed the video anyway!
@@TheAAieI'd love to try this challenge on my own bike (road bike with a pannier) in Limerick or Cork if you're accepting applications for volunteers 😊
Could've chosen someone who actually rides a bike since they chose a runner who's in shape and a motorcyclist who knows how to turn it on
Cyclist went wrong way down the road, on the footpath, skipped red lights and ignored all other traffic so very realistic
😂 😂 😂
cope more
And yet no like or comments from AA Ireland. Curious !
Oh no, it's almost as if it's insane to have the same laws for an exposed person driving a 20kg machine and a person wrapped in a one tonne box capable of murder. Just saying, you're sounding very celtic tiger
@@anarchocyclist would you let your toddler just run across the road anywhere they felt like because they are not going to harm the cars and lorries if they get hit? Just saying.
Lucan-Tallaght 15min by car. Lucan-Tallaght by public transport 3+ hours
As a motorbike driver, the motorbike will 100% win.
Edit. I was right
Obvious need for massive investment in public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure.
No brainer.
My money is on the motorist. They always win on Top Gear.
You watched the video then....
Problem IS: ONE HAS TO CROSS CITY CENTRE IN ORDER TO COMMUTE with PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.
Cyclists breaking the red light vs the motorcyclist respecting the rules of traffic...
And the excuse for not putting (exclusive) segregated cycle paths and priority paths for motorbikes is …….?
I could beat that on my charger4 ebike and a racer bike could probably beat me.
Would be great to get a competitive cyclist in the next video! Thanks for the comment Donall!
What speed does your charger 4 e-bike do?
Yeah if you dont have a student leap card that 1 euro goes up to 5
No just 2
@@Shane-ln5zz 2 buses for 2 euro now I haven't been on the bus for a while but that sounds like bullshit
@@jamesmckenna5438 Shane is correct. 2 euro covers you for 90 mins of travel these days.
I notice Lauren broke a Red light. Not exactly a fair comparison if you allow breaking laws. Also noticed how close she came to a pedestrian. Not exactly what should be allowed. As a pedestrian most of the time with a few close runs, disgusted at her cycling behaviour.
Anyone else wondering when CARTELS will make pedestrians and cyclists have CAR-LIKE INSURANCE SCHEME SCAM IMPOSED ON
Motorbike broke rules so did the cyclist
What rules did the motorbike break?
