Non-enterprise character: Your android-
Me: Oh boy, here we go.
Those androids are really giving her trouble at her advanced age.
The only thing nuttier than a Starfleet admiral is a non-Enterprise doctor.
They are only ever introduced to cause issues. All guest stars are plot points. All shuttle flights are plot points. All anything "of the week" really.
@@glynncordry5965 ffs plot, plot, plot, can’t you guys think of anything else and just enjoy the freaking show?
@@teleportedbreadfor3days Enjoy Star Trek for something other than the plot? What do you think this is, Abrams Trek?
@@TheFiddleFaddle Plot as in ‘plot armor’, ‘plot convenience’, etc., the usual kind of unimaginative critical responses to things that aren’t outright explained to viewers in every detail.
Though it’s not impossible I misread what this person said at the time
@@teleportedbreadfor3days It is a known fact that Roddenberry and then Berman's central axiom about TNG was that all the threats came from the outside. That the crew got along, there was no interpersonal conflict. This hamstrung the writers and left them coming up with corrupt Admirals and doctors as _plot points_ to continue to give the crew something to do. It's also one of the main reasons why, although TNG will always be my first and most true Trek love, DS9 has withstood the test of time because they allowed the principle cast to challenge each other. They were allowed to deal with the traumas and anger of loss and heartache in a way TNG never could.
Riker was all charm until the doctor said "And the _android..."_ He must've thought, "Oh, yet _another_ fanatical scientist who only views Data as an object beneath her. I swear, we get the worst of them in the Federation..."
I honestly sighed relief that the counselor didn't say anything like, "well, she doesn't trust Data."
They gained some degree of self awareness by season 5.
The Crystal-Bean Entity has earned Riker's wrath for torpedo-blocking him.
"I don't think you need an empath..."
"thanks goodness! You are fired, counselor!"
Riker's not letting those two victims be forgotten.
Never forget ... that old man!
No one cock-blocks William T. Riker and gets away with it.
He was gonna get rations and sex
Christmas took that away from him
@@BlackChapters I unironically love the idea that the Crystalline Entity is an eldritch abomination personification of Christmas.
Yeah, those survivors really can tell anything from brief contact with the entity's huge laser.
"I saw a giant crystal in the sky, i ran, it shot big beams at us, i kept running, we hid" - Repeat for all involved
Picard: "You have a problem with Data, you have one with me."
Complete Devestation. Absolutely no vests were left!
Perhaps the CE diVESTed itself of such concerns.
😂
Quite vast, though.
Oh beans
De-vest-ation, I got it....that's awful.
You are under a-vest!!!!!
Picard: Well?
*Every Jackwad Fanboy On The "Deanna Is Useless" train ready to mock how obvious the hostility was.*
Deanna: "I don't think you need an empath to sense THAT woman's feelings."
Y'all got owned years ahead of the first time you ever clicked a CZcams video. You may leave.
What is that all about? She must owe them money or something.
A simp mad about a useless character being called useless, just because it happens to be a woman. Kek.
@@tek512 Shush boy. Unless you wanna end up bent over the desk, with your drawers down to your ankles and my hot breath in your ear.
You do realize that this makes things even worse on the character of Troi, right? Being an empath was literally all she had going for her and in this scene, even that advantage is denied her and she STILL only states the obvious. Only now, the obvious was obvious to everyone, be they empath or not.
A character who is aware of their uselessness is still...useless. It does nothing to redeem them.
@Xylarxcode No, it was mockery. Also, Deanna is hot and she HAS shown moments where she helps people, senses things others can't figure out and could mediate and smooth friction over. The fact you think she was useless shows you don't watch star Trek, just clips.
*Great!* Another specist aboard the Enterprise.
It almost sounded like they were going to play the Enterprise fanfare at the beginning of the clip, but then it just shifted to the mundane wallpaper music of late TNG.
It was never the same without Ron Jones.
this crystaline entity prob tried to get frisky with another crystaline entity and got rejected and decided to take it out on this planet.
Frustration eating.
i wish they did that storyline instead haha
Star Trek TNG. Classic and Iconic.
Diana: I sence hostility
At least this time Troi acknowledged how obvious the emotions were.
I sensed hostility as well. Maybe I have abilities beyond normal humans. :)
I sense bad spelling...
This Lady has a lot of anger. 😱😬
Doctor Kila Marr had to do what was necessary to save billions if not trillions of lives. "The Few For The Many." "The Few For The Many." It's Vulcan Logic 101. What if the Crystalline Entity made a B Line directly to Earth or Vulcan putting Millions or even Billions of people at risk of being eaten by a space creature that only acts on Instinct alone like the Picture Plant in Voyager.
“The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few or one.” -Spock
With good reason. A tiger ate her son. The Crystalline Entity is just a form of Gluttony it devours everything. You can't reason with a Tiger or Bear or Lion they will eat you regardless.
...while being far too cheerful.
So much for spotting that lack of "objectivity"...
The crystalline entity was just looking for some beans.
Given the level of threat this monster presents, it seemed reasonable to send a fleet of ships rather than just one starship to do this whole job.
So much room for error.
Almost 200 years later Dr. Mar's descendant, Dr. Sandra Tilson, would assist the Master Chief in resisting the Didact's attempt to acquire the Composer.
wat?
Wow, they do have a remarkable similarity. Is she actually the voice/face of Dr. Tilson?
She gets all positively excited about people surviving 'her favorite mayhem', but not being able to indulge in her collective family guilt attributing makes her cranky, huh? Someone could have been blunt there and say that if she wants to be taken serious as a competent scientists, she should show some open-mindedness. - But what Picard said to Troi conveyed that concept. He is just doing it more covertly.
3:28 Did Troi just acknowledge and thereby neutralize the in-joke? 😅
I always loved Captain Picard’s jacket uniform. I always describe it as a starfleet shadow silhouette 😅😅😂
Another nut-case arrives on the Enterprise.
Great episode - its an eldritch horror that needed to be destroyed.
Destroyed? That was the bad outcome as It was probably the coolest creature in all of Star Trek well on the plus side turns out there are tons of them in the lore so they still exist.
@@B-26354 Rabid bear isn't cool so your example doesn't work.
Also your so called fact isn't true.
@DeathlordSlavik
It is true, you might not like it but sometimes the best thing to do is to destroy something.
Big boy thinking this buddy, might be too adult for you to process.
@@B-26354 Those things that need destroyed are never cool or interesting or even amusing.
No this isn't adult thinking because if it was you would be unable to even mention it due to how low your functioning is.
@@B-26354 No I don't think I am speaking to such a man as it is obvious you have no experience that is worth while.
Only in your flawed opinion.
Yes it is the work of a slow man as one of the few things the slow are good at is pretending to be something they aren't. This is why you can run into people all over the internet claiming to be veterans or have a important position in some field and they seem convincing unless you pay close attention and notice all the things they get wrong.
Her sociopathic change from hating Data to loving him because he ‘channeled’ her dead son. Then gleefully destroying the array later makes her ‘bitter’ type guest role interesting, but leaving me ambivalent
I know the script depicts the doctor as being prejudice and unreasonable, but let's be honest, if you had a loved one die because a Tesla malfunctioned, wouldn't you be a little squeamish of getting in one?
First, comparing Data to a car was a rude way to get into it. Also, this is at best guilt by association, which is outright prejudiced and unreasonable. ''If your brother is a killer, you must be a killer too'' is just absurd. The doctor is wrong, I'm appalled you think she's right.
@Ares99999 you do know Data isn't a real person, don't you?
@@voiceofreason1629 You know prejudice and bigotry are wrong, don't you?
@@Ares99999 , oh, you're one of those.
@@voiceofreason1629A very interesting view to take, since TNG is _devoted_ to the idea that Data is a real person. I suggest watching "Measure of a Man".
“Devastation”
I thought humanity gave up their prejudice?
"investigate"
DevAstation! Fuck!
What are you, 9? It's dev-A-station.
That must've been the best curry Riker would've ever had
Zoologist? Physics doctor or weapon expert.
Devestation ~> devastation
‘There were survivors of this devastation?!!!?….can I get an autograph?!?!
devestation or devestetion or maybe devesteten
the old bag really no like nuts and bolts.......i'm dead
OMG Stop this blatant anti-robotism!
Data is an android, not a "robot".
He would insist that that distinction is made (not least because the word "robot" does derive from the Czech for "slave" / "servant", so I can see why he might object to "robot" on the grounds that it denies his independence, where "android" simply means he's a humanoid in shape, implying nothing else).
@@klaxoncow you just made Albert funnier. 🤣
How's Hitler?
@@klaxoncow Isn't it offensive to basically call him 'that human-like guy'? 😉
@@klaxoncow very interesting!
All waistcoats were removed?🤨
Curious.👀
This isn't Picard's best episode.
Given his encounters with Q, Armus and Nagilum, he should've been more cautious with this one.
How was he not cautious? All he wanted was to try to talk to it before killing it. Even Sisko would have tried to avoid a fight if at all possible.
Devastation*
Complete Devestation theres no beans
She didn't bring a coat or pack and extra pair of underwear?
A very picky person she is lor and Data are not the same just constructed the same as 1 is an evil twin
To be fair, they are identical in almost every respect. Since she blames Lore for the attack on Omicron Theta, then it would be prudent to distrust Data, at the very least.
@@TheZetaKai just because one person is bad is like the difference between night and day not even the same.
@@shauljonah6955 When you're looking at a population of billions, sure, one and another might very well be different, but Data and Lore are the only two of their kind. If your first encounter with a cat has them being a nightmare to you, you might be a bit wary of your second cat.
Android-phobic karen haha
Well, technically Lore-phobic, I mean I'd be wary of Data too if I'd been in similar shoes...in fairness.
@@tablescissors but isn't judging a race by the actions of a few individuals a kind of gross overgeneralization that leads to stereotyping? In this case Star Trek may have a teachable moment for you, its not really fair at all to assume Data' motivations based on a single other example from his "race"
The Federation has to learn to be inclusive to any life form, even if it consumes entire planets. Anything else would be bigoted and racist!
Beats bloodthirsty and trigger-happy.
you think troi would sense nothing from another android
Julianna Tainer is the character that you're thinking of, and she doesn't show up until next season.
