Atlanta 1991 by car. At the end of the movie, you see short the house on the Peachtree Street, where Margaret Mitchell wrote her international success "Gone With the Wind". At that time still in very bad condition. Recordings are from 1991.
This is great!
I was at Georgia State University in 1991 so i was likely downtown when this was filmed.
woooow!!
I was 7 in '91. Growing up in ATL back then was an experience like none other.
Yes🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cleveland Ave approves ✌🏿
Underground was the place to be, on a Saturday!
I was born in 95 👀 this footage older than me . Just shows you life goes on.
Things changed after the 1996 Olympics. Now traffic is bad everywhere.
I moved to Atlanta in 1990. This is traveling from downtown, north to midtown. Jin's Wigs at 1:04 on the left, is where most drag queens bought their hair back then. The infamous Backstreet nightclub is on the right at 4:48. The stories that came of that place could fill a library. The Margaret Mitchell house (last shot at end of video) is missing it's exterior wall on the right, due to a massive fire. it sat for years in the same condition and looked like a giant doll house, because you could see all the rooms from the street. It was eventually torn down and a new museum house was built. Loved Atlanta back then--it was a lot of fun.
imaginationunreal Wow! You are definitely from here!
I moved there in 1991. So much fun.
There was some place downtown that had giant plaster neon green slime on the front. I can't remember where or what it was
Well, as fun as it may have been, the 80's were a lot MORE fun (at least early on). Actually, as far as "fun" goes, the late 70's topped the 80's (if you know what I mean). Frankly, it appears that culturally, and socially, we've been on a downward spiral ever since 1982, when all the fun came to a head and abruptly, changed gears, as it were. Why, well, it was all we could do, to carry on, as if nothing had changed, when indeed, everything had. We do seem to manage though, don't we? We make the best of things as they are. I just wish the show could have maintained its "bright lights," so to speak. That way, I'd still be entertained by it. Oh well, it's all for the best, I suppose. Those of us, in the know, find other ways to fulfill the days of our lives. Carry on. Carry on.
I was born 1 year later 😊
I love Atlanta, I love 90´s and I love the music on this video
Alot of 70's GM's Ford and Chrysler products were still on the road then
U can have a car now from 10yrs ago and it blends n with the new ones but 81 and 91 cars.... The styling was like night and day
The difference is attributed to the FMVSS rules allowing composite headlamps rather than mandating sealed beam units in the mid-1980s.
@@henryca03 Yes but it's more than just that. The formal styling made way for the jellybean styling.
I kinda love that though. A 20 year old car and a 10 year old car and a brand new car all look similar enough (and pretty) to the point where all the cars on the road are pretty now. No more ugly 80s or 90s cars. It’s all well designed 2000s + cars and the styling all looks new
Oh, look, there went Craig Bolhman, a friend of mine, in his Cutlass Supreme!
Thanks for the post ! I lived there 89 - 96
Good times 😎
I also lived there '94-'97. Atlanta was great back then!!!!
I remember ATL like this
Wow I remember when Macy's was downtown, along with Lerner's, Casual Corner, etc. The good old days!
What's your favorite sexual position?
Olympic 1L19 Man get a fucking life! Disrespecting the woman like that.
Olympic 1L19 LOL that came out of nowhere
really feeling the footage and music
Yeah this is definitely early 90s Atlanta!!!!! You can tell by how the MARTA buses look!!!!!!
celticsdude Most definitely!
If you know you know
wow just like I remember.... thank you for this video
When older Atlanta residents say we miss the old Atlanta, videos like this one bring back haunting memories. Before Freaknic, before Music Midtown or before Atlanta became Hollywood south, we came together as a city during the late 80s and early 90 for events such as 'Light Up Atlanta". We ditched our cars and walked and mingled down Peachtree Street. The Arts festival in Piedmont Park was an event the whole metro came out for, literally fun without drama. Atlanta had a certain charm, young dudes like me on our own for the first time could actually make it in Atlanta, jobs were literally one next door to the other, I bought my first car for cash and rented an apartment between downtown and midtown, and I could afford to take a girl on a date,[they actually spoke to young men back then] Then suddenly there was an effort to build Atlanta into an international city, that effort continues, but the charm is long gone. Freaknic, The Olympics, Hollywood, 6,000,000 metro residents....
WOW! Is there six MILLION now??? Ooo, that's a lot!
I think the Olympics were the beginning of the end of Atlanta. What exists now is barely recognizable as the same city ...so much has changed and not for the better.
@@jeffreyrichard2575 Yes, yes, that's life, Jeff, always changing. It's up to us to make the best of it, no matter what. Look on the bright side and keep our chin up!
@@jeffreyrichard2575 I forgot to mention how nice it is now, that we have CZcams to make up for any shortcomings in town. Wouldn't you agree?
I definitely miss this vibe
Woah. Atlanta actually cared for the homeless back then.
They actually did.
Yep until the Olympics came
If you think it's bad there, stay there. The rest of the country will have a big surprise for you.
@@usernameforyoutube2661 Your point exactly. Los Angeles' homeless issue is horrible. My Dad went there recently, & he says he never wants to go there again.
It wasn’t near as bad as it is in now.
the streets were clean
They’re still pretty clean for a major city imo 🤷♂️. Occasionally you’ll find a trash on the ground but people are trash and sometimes they’ll throw a piece of garbage onto the ground
Thank you for posting this video...we need more of these
1 was 4yrs old in 1990,I miss this Atlanta.
If I had a time machine!!!
Cool shot of the construction of the Bank of America building. I forgot it didn’t open until 1992.
Gas prices back then 89 cents a gallon smh now days people are struggling to keep gas in their cars smh.
Brings me back! Grew up in Atlanta since the mid-80s, and it’s still my hometown. (I was about ten when this video was made.)
Thank you!
I wanna see more of this someday
Midtown Atlanta looked so much different in the early 1990s as compared to the 2020s.
Kessler and H.L. Green were still open in 1990!!!!
Remebering visiting my relatives there when I was a toddler in the early 90s!!!!!
No traffic....😢 Beautiful.
True!!
This is before everybody wanted to move here... Atlanta was a lot different before 1996...

fun fact : hmm the crysler at @5:21 is a official government car. Lime green ,used by military police and recruiters could spot those anywhere back then. Ugly cars
hi Mr Brandon Delon casey
This is so awesome!
That first stretch of Whitehall st at the beginning still look like that
Video opens with the driver on Whithall Street 💞
Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to use a piece of this archival footage for an upcoming non-commercial video? We would give credit if allowed.
Native Atlantan here. If this is 1991, then the whole city at this time was starting to buzz with energy and pride, because the 1996 Olympics had already been announced for Atlanta. I would be married the next year. Can't believe this has been 31 years ago.
Yes, it was 1991 in the autumn!
@@dirtypairXX Thanks.
Yessss, time is fleeting, Adam. Better get with it and make your light shine before it's all over, the end.
I lived in Atlanta from 91 to 92. I am probably standing along the road waiting for a bus.
Yeah, I saw you, honey. You looked like your feet were hurting. I bet you were glad to get in and sit down, weren't ya?
This is when downtown was vibrant and full of life. Midtown was basically a dump and a shadow of what it is now. Now it's downtown that's a dump and midtown is thriving and vibrant. I miss the old days but without the crime that came with the crack epidemic.
i was 7years old in 1991 frome East atlanta zone6
as of year 66
I was 11 bro . From Pittsburgh area
Video sound 1990
IT'S Gay city now!!
I visited family over there at East Meadow apt
Being a Atlanta native this is beautiful lol. City has changed a lot
Cleveland Ave here 🙋🏿♂️ and all I can say is yes
hi Mr Brandon Delon Casey
They're driving past Woodruff Park during the third minute of the video. I live in ATL but never knew those beautiful historic buildings are there! I'm gonna do some sightseeing there.
I was 5 yrs old ; (
This is when i grew up in ATL. Pre Olympic ATL...when u could still go straight down west ptree at 4:04. Pre Olympic ATL had more mom n pop shops and places to eat down town. And midtown was a lil run down, unlike the overpriced area it is today
I've always wondered what Atlanta looked like during the days of "Too Legit to quit" Falcons. I still can't let go of my Saints losing to the Falcons in the Wild Card Playoff game.
5 points look different asf 😂💯
Not really tho, jus not as clean...downtown kinda look the same...crazy seeing them actually building the Bank of America tower...they shoulda went through some back streets
I miss the underground in the 90's the perfect view of the Georgia dome
I love it!!!
Looks like extra footage from the walking dead season 1😮
Downtown looks so different in 1990 i was 9 yrs old. Look at mart buses
Nice capture if the construction of the Bank of America Tower.
I miss that Macys along Peachtree. I like how it looked to upscale when you drove by it
4:19 is that what is now the Bank of America Tower?
Yup sure is.
You know it is 😎
Does that read .99 cents for regular gas?? 😩😩😩
The Bank of America Tower being built.
We transplants came here and built this place up thank God.
Wow still constructing the Bank of America building
Is it me or did the city looked so much better back then? Even down to the buildings and people walking around? Now it seems ridden with crime ,trash everywhere, bad roads, homeless people and prostitutes in almost every corner. I guess this was before Atlanta became popular and everyone wanted to move here.
BROTHA Jeff actually Atlanta was one of the most dangerous cities in the 80s and early 90s.
Atlanta was the most dangerous city in the US in 1994. I moved there that year.
celticsdude what was it like when u moved that year? Was it really bad as they making it seem like?
@@celticsdude Not to be funny but i doubt ATL was the most dangerous city in the U.S back then... The rough areas of New York Chicago and Cali would probably top ATL..
It wasn't that dangerous I was skipping school in elementary school in Dekalb in the 80s and going everywhere by bike and foot.. You had to go in to bad neighborhoods that were tucked away certain places to be at risk.
I remember downtown where the soul food places were, and a lot of hidden homeless towns where they built little shacks too right next to downtown.. I even wen't through the old "rich people" neighborhoods too cause of where my mom and dad worked.. The gentrification stuff started in the eighties it just didn't show up in certain parts till the nineties where they took land by force using improvement bills..
Just spotted Big B drugstore. Just last week I was trying to remember the name of it.
Whew, Early 90s Atlanta, memories of visiting my family as a child are coming back!!!!!
Same here
This reminds me of GTA San Andreas. I mean, you've got the hood, and the big city. It's a great reminder.
GTA is Los Angeles, compressed to about 1/10 scale. All the major L.A. landmarks are in there.
I'd love someone to do a side-by-side drive synchronized with this video so we can compare.
Dangerous area back then buddy, too many hoods
Wow miss the old A I was in the 10 th grade
Many don’t even remember Macys being downtown
I remember those old Marta Flixable Clipped buses, you could be riding some where, and be bound to find a bus broken down!😂
Bahahah yes I remember these Flixible buses last operations in ATL.
Early 2000’s.
I rode them in school.
The brakes used to grunt…😬
Hi,
Would like to get in touch about the possibility of using part of this video in a Documentary, but can't find a way to PM/email you. How can I get in touch?
Did this person ever get back to you on this? I am seeking similar request.
This video starts on Whitehall Street
2:39 Are my eyes bad or the truck on the left side is Zastava 650 made in Ex Yugoslavia (More knows as Balkan states) ?
I saw the same potholes
I spy a Krystal in Midtown! It's a Starbucks now.
Good stuff.
What is the name of the song and artist playing? It sounds like it's from the '70s.
Hey y'all I'm from the future and yes we still say y'all.
downtown pretty much look the same, which is pathetic
Because Atlanta choose to sprawl out than build its downtown. Downtown is now changing the whole white flight was still in effect back then
Centennial Olympic Park wasn't there, nor the Georgia Aquarium, World Of Coke, or any of many other attractions around the park. There also weren't some buildings there at the time that were constructed around Ivan Allen in the early 2000s. Georgia state dorms were not there. Truist Plaza Building (SunTrust Plaza) was still being constructed. Macy's was still in operation in downtown. There have been changes, but the changes do pale in comparison to what has happened in midtown, "West Midtown", and Buckhead since then.
Hi @dirtypairxx my name is Lamisse, I'm an associate producer for an upcoming documentary that takes a look at Atlanta in the 90s. I'd love to connect with you to talk about some of your awesome footage. What is the best way to reach you?
Any idea what that music is @4:30?
Can I contact you about using this footage?
At 4:20 that bldg is STILL sitting there abandoned
I was just saying that. That building been abandoned since the 90’s damn lol
What was that building supposed to be?? I've seen it since I moved here in the 90's
That’s a nice looking Mustang GT at 2:33

I think this was 95. The bus didn't look like that in 91.
Charles Smith The bank of America tower is still under construction which says this was in the early 90s.
MARTA buses never really changed much throughout the 80s and 90s. The difference is that by the late 90s they started phasing out a lot of the accordion type long buses.
I was -6
whats the name of the first song?
Damn you seen nun but old schools and pluks now its Bentley’s , maseratis and phantoms

Down town is pretty much abandoned now
what are you talking about?.. its been gentrified to hell so it looks posh af
Since when I moved here in the 90s and I have seen Atlanta grow a great deal.
Show the real Atlanta, the projects and the people.
Luis Gutierrez he was to scared to go to the hood
Facts, the Atlanta they don’t like to talk about, the real dirty south
@@zone6eastside672 and racist.
That is only like half of the city, and how is that anymore the "real Atlanta" than the other, nicer half? Plus, driving down Donald Lee Hollowell (Bankhead) or vicinity can be dangerous for a white person, especially back then.
People had since down at five points then😂😂😂
